yes...the reference in the poem is to the fact that Beethovan towards the end of life grew deaf...and yet continued to chase the Muse of Music IP: Logged |

There were several Muses of Music. Melpomene was associated with tragedy and theatre. It WAS very tragic that Mr. Beethoven went deaf in his physical ears, but still wrote down the musical scores to the music he heard in his Imagination. He wrote his famous Ninth Symphony while deaf!
