i'm going to ask my dad if i can get a cat. i think it would be a good idea since i have major depression and i'm lonely all of the time. i just moved away from my friends last week to stay here and try and save some money. i would most definitely like to have a companion to take care of. i had a cat all through high school and when i moved, a friend took him and he was eaten by coyotes well it's a lot of time and $ but i think it'll be worth it.

well has anyone had a pet get them through difficult times, or lonliness/depression? it really helped me so i'm hoping my dad will take me to the animal shelter

OMG. my dogs have been there for me so many times I don't know what I would do without them. I think having an animal around it a great idea.

I can't live without my cats because they help me so much with my chronic depression. I think cats are ideal who people strtuggling with depression ebcause they are more independant than dogs and thus are not as "high maintanence", yet are more affectionate than many other pets, like fish.

The only concern is that cats do require regular care - feeding, clean water, a clean and safe place to sleep, a clean litter box, vet check-ups - and if your depression is too severe for you to handle that kind of responsibility on a consistant basis, it'd be best to have someone else around to help you care for the cat when you cannot.

Otherwise cats are good companions for depressives. If you do go to the animal shelter, be sure to pick out a cat or kitten that is eager to interact with you. I know how seductive little kittens are, but please consider a grown cat, if it's the only one you'll have - grown cats are less work to care for, and you already can see what they grown-up pesonality is like. An affectionate kitten may turn out to be an aloof adult, while an affectionate adult is most likely going to stay that way.

Good luck and I hope you can get a cat.
