Aloft Hotels

The Aloft hotels are part of the Starwood Hotels & Resorts family, and 66 of their 100 properties are pet friendly. The pet policies vary a bit by hotel, but generally they allow two dogs per room with a 40 pound weight restriction at no extra cost. Guests with larger dogs are encouraged to contact the hotel directly to receive a waiver from the weight limit. Through their arf program, they provide dog guests with a special bed, bowl, and a doggie bag of woof-alicious treats and toys, for use during your stay.

Kimpton Hotels

The Kimpton hotel chain was at the front of the pack in the pet friendly movement with their HosPETality Unleashed program. They’ve stayed in the lead by welcoming all furry, feathery, and scaly family members at every one of their hotels – no matter their size, weight, or breed, all at no extra charge. And they go the extra mile to be sure your pets enjoy their stay as much as you do with special amenities like comfy pet beds, treats at check in, and pet friendly yappy hours in the evening.

La Quinta Hotels

With nearly 900 hotels flying the La Quinta flag across North America, you’re never far from a pet friendly place to stay. Located along major highways and in towns and cities, this chain is our stand-by when it’s time to find an affordable and reliably pleasant hotel. A handful (less than 10) of the La Quinta hotels charge a pet fee, but we’ve never encountered one. Most have a pet policy stating they welcome cats and dogs, and allow two pets per room with a 50 pound per pet weight limit, but we’ve found this weight restriction is rarely enforced. Still, it’s best to confirm the hotel’s pet policy before making your reservation.

Motel 6

Motel 6 is the largest owned and operated motel chain in the country with approximately 1,200 properties. Their rooms are some of the most affordable you’ll find and every location is pet friendly. Motel 6 imposes no restrictions on size or number of pets, and does not charge additional fees. (The Studio 6 branded hotels charge a $10 per night pet fee up to $50.) The rooms are very basic, but the price is right!

Red Roof Inns

With nearly 400 locations, Red Roof Inns are providing pet friendly accommodations at economical prices across the U.S. Their properties can be found along major highways and right downtown in some of our favorite cities – and all but three of their locations welcome pets. This chain provides a consistent pet policy across all of their hotels: one dog or cat is welcome to accompany you, with no additional fees. Some locations do impose weight restrictions, so be sure to confirm the pet policy before booking.

Drury Inn

Update: Since we originally posted this article the Drury Inn hotel chain had changed their pet policy and is no longer free. However, at $10 per night, it’s still a very reasonable fee given the quality of these pet friendly hotels.

The Drury Inn hotel chain is a well-kept pet friendly secret, and one of our favorite places to stay. With 130 properties in 20 states throughout the south and mid-west, they bring southern hospitality to the mid-scale hotel experience with a free hot breakfast, beverages and hot appetizers in the evening, and free wifi. The warm welcome extends to the pets – dogs and cats are welcome to join you with no additional fees. Two pets are allowed per room, and some locations may enforce a 50 pound weight limit – so confirm the pet policy before you book.

Major change is needed. I think it will take decades before people's awareness is brought up to date - or up to reality.
