Im not religious in any way. but i found this post and it freaked me out.

Does anyone agree with me that the religious concept of ETERNITY is a totally bizarre and unpalatable idea?

Irrespective of whether it's about heaven or hell I find either scenario grotesque. We all know about what an unappealing place hell is meant to be, but am I alone in finding the prospect of an eternity spent in heaven just as disturbing?

It's easy to use the word Eternity without considering its full implications, because we are so familiar with the term. However, to me, the almost incomprehensible thought of a literally never-ending state, however pleasant for the first 600 trillion years, is as scary as it gets.

We humans aren't programmed to last forever, even in the Natural World, which changes by the day - mercifully - so how can we hope to get our minds around, let alone want to experience a perfectly static eternity? No future to look forward to, only more of the same - ad nauseam - in fact, NOTHING NEW to distract us in any way.

Even BLISS would start to pall through its sheer monotony. We need the stimulation of challenges to keep our minds working, but there won't be any challenges in heaven - all that will be behind us. We would soon start to pine for our imperfect earthly existence, I'm quite sure. Because, with nothing to contrast with perfect happiness, such happiness would become meaningless, just as light depends on darkness to give it any validity.

Please don't tell me that God will be all we need to keep us sane and stimulated - I suspect god himself would eventually be driven mad in such a situation, and would probably die of boredom, if only he could.

What agony.

Why did it freak you?

It is right -- there is no heaven or hell. It is all in our imaginations.

Buddhism talks about impermanence of all things and events and only the one who attains perfect Buddha wisdom is beyond such impermenance i.e eternal.

The only eternity is the now, the present but no one lives in it for long. Osho says only the Masters does. The minds of ordinary human beings vacillate between the past and future but never in the present for a longer time.

Linda Goodman talked about it but I don't think she is a Master. Also Aurobindo and the Mother got it wrong on physical immortality -- perhaps in future science can make that dream possible -- never say never

I intend to keep learning and experiencing forever.
If one stops then ones' soul/life energy will be recycled to supply energy for a new soul who may not give up.
To stop growing and learning and experiencing is a stasis, a stagnation, a cosmic waste of energy.
A lazy foolish worthless non evolved decision.
Infinity/eternity has no permanent unchanging place for such souls who choose an "end" of truly existing on an eternally evolving path which never ends.

There is nothing to know in our world. I am bored to live as a human being. Its time to move on. Isn't there a Beatles song on that LOL -- check lyrics of 'All you need is love'

And in reality the eternity cannot be spoken of. Scholars when they look at the sun don't really look but they analyse in their intellectual head. They are the modern Pharisees who talk about it without having experienced it.

The buddhists speak of an absolute reality and a relative one. Will like to talk more on that and perhaps should interest HSC but no time on hand at the moment. Meanwhile some quotes to meditate upon.

quote:

I believe in God because he is absurd. - Tertullian

quote:
Not only the one is in the all the all is also in the one. A beautiful lex not anagram of the word Alone

quote:
The source is like a river where in one can't even step once in to it , but in this physical universe even a broken clock is right twice a day

quote:

Truth can never be spoken and if its spoken its not the truth - Lao Tsu

Mannu,

I quess that part that freaked me out was about eternity. I don't believe in heaven or hell either.

I realize that some who do have hell held over there head to control them. But the thought of erernity anywhere sounds like punishment

To me Eternity means that time ceases to exist. Eternity is the God all crave for in all religious texts while the mind is the devil in those texts because the mind is really time.

Thats why I call Jesus and Osho and others masters, because they have gone beyond the human limitations or the next evolution if you will(not time to discuss it but if you are really unterested then you may read Nietzsche and even Aurobindo) Meditation allows anyone to be a master.

Free yourself from the fetters of mind.
Think about it: Who came first? Is it your thoughts or you?
