hi aries sun! u've asked something which requires a looong explanation 
so i'm gonna try to answer your questions as simply and briefly as i can.
first of all, numerology can be 'figured out' by both your date of birth and your name. it's quite simple, if you're born on a single number day, such as 1, 2,...,9 then you're a 1, 2,...,9 person.if you're born on a double number day, then you're influenced by two numbers,the two digit compound key number which is anything from 10-31 and the single number which is reduces to for example 10=1+0=1, 29=9+2=11=2. now i believe i'm quoting linda from star signs (i tend to do that a lot ), basically the single numbers represent how one appears to others, they are the numbers of individuality and personality. the compound numbers indicates the karmic influences that govern one's destiny (influences which can be controlled by one's free will and is using the wisdom given by the ancients in the interpretation of the numbers ).i'll give you an example from a thread in this forum:

thus john mccain's single birth number is 29=1=2 and this is what the interpretation looks like:
THE NUMBER 2The Number 2 vibrates to the Moon. It represents imagination, parenthood, and sensitivity. 2 is the number of conception, childbirth, and dreams.
A person or entity is influenced by the Number 2 if born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th, or 29th day of any month, in any year. The 29 is a number of perhaps the heaviest Karma of all. It tests the person or entity it represents for spiritual strength, through trials and tribulations echoing the Old Testament story of Job. The life is filled with uncertainties, treachery and deception from others, unreliable friends, unexpected dangers--and considerable grief and anxiety caused by members of the opposite sex. It's a number of grave warnings in every area of the personal life and career. When 29 is the Compound Key Number of the name, it's obvious that the spelling of the name should be changed to lift this difficult vibration, unless one is a masochist.
If 29 is the birth number, and thereby unavoidable, conscious effort must be made to dilute and eventually to negate, neutralize, or erase this karmic burden. It can, to a great extent, be eased by choosing a new name (or spelling) with a strongly positive Compound Key Number. Further than this, the person born on the 29th day of any month should do everything advised in Chapter 4 concerning Karma and reincarnation.
In the specific instance of the 29 vibration (bringing with it also the secondary vibration of 11, which should also be read regarding the way to relieve the karmic burden)--remember that the development of absolute faith in goodness and the power of the Self…the constant and energetic cultivation of optimism…will act as a miraculous medicine for the problems of the number 29.
After all, Job's burdens were finally lifted, when he had learned to accept full responsibility for his troubles, and not to blame others or seek revenge for the hurts he suffered. Not only did his long bad-luck streak end at last, he was given back everything he'd lost, several times over. So, if you were born on the 29th, change the vibration of your name to a powerful number, such as 19, follow Job's example, and soon you'll be as happy as--or happier than--anyone else. Interestingly, the name "Job" equals the powerful Compound number 10--a difficult vibration to defeat.

in addition to the single and compound numbers derived from the day of birth, it is also possible to derive a secondary set of numbers using the entire birth date (these numbers exert a lesser influence, but are part of your numerological profile all the same).using john mccain as an example again, august 29 1936:

adding it all together equals 20=2

now you will notice that while calculating his secondary numbers, i didnt reduce 29=11 to 2,and there is an excellent reason for that. 11 and 22 are the master numbers in numerology and so they can only be reduced to obtain the final single key number of the day of birth.the same goes when you are calculating someone's name,i'll explain a little later how you do that,but first let me give you one last rule, linda called this the zebra rule.and here i will quote her word to word from star signs:
too many people associate numerology with 'lucky numbers'. there is no such thing in numerology as a guaranteed-always-lucky number. however, the single key number of your day of birth does vibrate harmoniously with you in most situations. therefore, not always, but frequently when you keep important appointments on a day of the month that harmonizes with your day of birth, things will turn out to be more fortunate than not.
for example, if you were born on the 1st, 10th or 19th day of any month, you're influenced by the single number 1 and should try to arrange important meetings on those days. if you were born on the 2nd,11th, 20th or 29th, you're influenced by the single number 2, and should try to arrange important meetings on these days -- and so on with all the numbers(Except for the numbers 4 and 8).
my side note: the reason the numbers 4 and 8 are an exception is because they are called the numbers of fate and destiny, chosen by the higher selves of the persons influenced by them as a birth channel owing to karmic obligations and increasing their vibrations is not really a fortunate thing.i wont go into details about it here since i do also want to tell you how to calculate your name numbers, but if you're a 4 or 8 by birth or name, there are tons of threads here on it and maybe i can type out the section from star signs if you're interested.
