Did anyone else notice that Astro.com changed some of their chart graphics? It looks like Venus, Vesta, and Ceres on my chart. Have you noticed any others?

They show the glyphs used in astro programmes for the major asteroids, it's not so bad. Have you ever used an astro programme? It's the same thing.

Yes, something seems slightly off and I'm not even looking at asteroids. My example is that when I look at a chart that's the 63% size, the font is much too small and thin.

Also, when you look at a chart at the largest size, you can see that they've done something to the font for the symbols. If it was print on paper, it looks like they aren't using a enough ink for the size of the symbols. They must be working on something new. I only noticed it slightly tonight but I didn't notice it as much until you pointed it out. I like larger print, 12 pt or larger. I begin to get cranky and down right pi$$ed off when the font is 10 pt or smaller. I start saying things like, "You've GOT to be kidding me!!"

Yes, I noticed it looked different today too. The aspect lines and glyphs are very pronounced. Everything seems to just jump out of the screen at you.

Thank heavens they put the astro glyphs back in the additional table. Letters of the alphabet were appearing in place of the glyphs a while ago. That or I encountered a tech glitch.

Webmaster Alois posted this->>

quote:
Some of you may have noticed that since today around 15:00 Universal time the image quality of the free charts is very much improved.

The reason is that we switched to a different graphics library (called cairo) for image generation and for generation of PDF print files.

The new library is capable of handling unicode, i.e. all characters of all languages in the world, while our previous self-written library could only handle western european characters. This change is an essential part for the preparation of our Japanese and Chinese language chart service in the course of this year.

The change comes at a price: the time to generate a chart has gone up from 0.3 seconds to 0.6 seconds on the fastest machines in our server cluster, and from 0.8 to 1.6 seconds on the slowest machines.

Another new feature is that we now have glyphs for the four major asteroids Ceres, Pallas, Juno and Vesta.

If anybody has found our technical staff slow in repsonse in the past few weeks: the hard work on this new software release is the main cause, we have neglected nearly everything else.

I am not sure if I like the graph yet, maybe I just need to get used to it.

The fonts on the chart seems bigger and easier to read, but the box at the lower left corner of the page with the Natal and Transits is almost too small to read...

There are times when I like to use the small size charts instead of the large, but now I can barely see the degree numbers, they're much too small and you're correct about the aspect graph being too small. I guess I'll have to always use the larger charts, but I don't like to, even though I purposely bought a large screen monitor for astrology, it's not always desireable to look at the large charts. Oh well, I'll see if I get used to it, if not, I'll write a note to Alois and tell him how the charts appear to me, but ultimately it's up to them.

It's funny, but I prefer to use astro.com's free software better than my professional software. Maybe I'll just get used to it.

OMG! That writing is small!!! Changing screen resolution didn't help either. That's one way to do in your eyesight.

I thought they may have allowed for more asteroids too, but not.
