This is a very touchy subject here lol! I dunno. I go with whatever I feel.

------------------
Virgo Asc 6˚& Mars 0˚
Gemini Sun 24˚
Libra Moon 14˚(conjunct Pluto 0˚ in 2nd house)
Gemini Mercury 25˚
Cancer Venus 29˚
And yes, i'm a guy!

I've heard that you should allow no more than a 9 degree orb for conjunctions to the Luminaries & around 6 for the other planets.
The orb is MUCH tighter for progressions 2-3 deg orb for the progressed Moon 1 for Pr.Sun, >1 Deg for solar arcs......

Some people use really really tight orbs and they have their reasons. Some people use huge orbs up to 15˚ and they have their reasons. Me, I go by if I feel it in the snastry, then I feel it.

------------------
Virgo Asc 6˚& Mars 0˚
Gemini Sun 24˚
Libra Moon 14˚(conjunct Pluto 0˚ in 2nd house)
Gemini Mercury 25˚
Cancer Venus 29˚

I think 10 degrees is too wide for any aspect, especially when it involves an outer planet..because otherwise you share that aspect with tons of people in a generation, and you know you don't feel that specific aspect with each of those people. However, if it's exact or within 2 degrees I think it is noticed more with that person.

Even professional astrologers disagree on allowable orbs
Unless there are extenuating circumstances such as extreme emphasis on the planets involved due to other aspects, personally I use:
No more than 1.5 for the quintile family
No more than 2 for a semi-sextile, semi-square, sesqui-quadrate or for asteroids
No more than 3 for a sextile or quincunx
No more than 5 for a square
No more than 7 for trine or opposition
No more than 8 for the Lights

Lights = Luminaries = Sun and Moon
Ooops, forgot conjunctions
6 degrees, depending.....

And by "extenuating circumstances" I mean situations like my Mars and Venus:
Mars - 22 Virgo, Venus - 2 Libra
Not a conjunction in my book.
However, they're both opposite my Moon at 26 Pisces, so they're tied together (in a way) for better or worse

these astrologers should come together and agree on something dammit!!!

I remember reading something Liz Greene wrote about allowing large orbs for Pluto -- will see if I can find it.....

leaping, astro's just NOT an exact science -- there's so much emotional and intuitive (and unquantifiable) activity that it really just takes time and practice and what seems to work for you

Maybe those intelligent and eloquent Merc aspects of yours really DO work, due to contacts with other planets in your chart, house/sign, dispositors etc.....

It's partly a mathematical ratio of my own choosing (between 15 and 21)

ie,

semi-sextile ~ 2/30 = 15
sextile ~ 3/60 = 20
square ~ 5/90 = 18
trine ~ 7/120 = 17
opp ~ 7/180 = 21

And I'm often inclined to give hard aspects a bit more leeway than the soft aspects.....
Note: >>> this is only my own personal scheme and does not follow any particular astrological convention <<<

Minor aspects = up to 3 degrees
Major aspects [and only when the planets are in the same sign or properly placed] - up to 8 degrees

leaping ~

Nice mathematical interp!!
And very level-headed about that other thing

Ericka ~

Yes, your parents have a trine -- you might think of '2 Taurus' as '32 Aries,' and Aries and Sag are the same element/triplicity. 29 Sag to 2 Taurus is 123 degrees -- well within allowable orb for a trine
