This aspect puzzles me.
Sometimes I think it doesn`t mean that much at all; sometimes I think it is more important than I give it credit.

So I wanted to ask:
how important do you think is the sextile, esp. in synastry?
And how does it "feel"?
How strong is it, compared to conjunction, trine, opposition or square?
Are you using the same orb as with the other aspects?

I'd say sextiles are more active than trines,if natal is a dish,sextiles are spices. For my synastries I never go over 3 degrees orb;
I noticed people feel Sun/Moon,Moon/Venus,Venus/Sun sextiles strongly - it gives them the proper challenge: planets are not too alike, not too different. A comfortable aspect.

For sextile and other minor aspect i took magis thoery to my heart. And i also allow smaller orb for these. Magi only includes sextile aspect to be significant when it is part of planetory geometry.

Personally, I love sextiles and would never discount them.

In my natal I’ve got a tight sextile between my Cap Sun ruler Saturn at zero degrees Virgo, and my Sag Asc ruler Jupiter at zero degrees Cancer. And I can really feel it… I’m very levelheaded… I’m not someone that yo yo’s between extremes in my perspectives at all… I’m rarely ever too depressive, or too ‘manic’…. I tend to maintain a generally positive yet realistic attitude to life…. There’s a good flow of internal self talk between my practical side and my optimistic side. Usually, I’m firm yet happy.

Yes, Sextiles to me are quite powerful, especially if they are under 3 degrees in orb. They are mildly exciting, in that they do seem to involve quite a bit or activity, and often involve lots of fun communication…. Kind of like at a party where everyone is getting along and there is lots of banter, joking around, flirting, and silly gossip. Nothing too dramatic usually happens with Sextiles, and things usually go smoothly….The first Sextile in the zodiac occurs in the sign of Gemini and Sextiles do seem to have quite a Gemini quality to them…. They are light and mild, easygoing, communicative, stimulating, spontaneous, supportive, helpful, friendly, and active in a flowing kind of way…

I think looking at the elements helps explain how sextiles work…. Air feeds Fire, Water nourishes the Earth, Fire excites Air, Earth supports Water…. These elements help each other in very fundamental ways. They are different enough to find each other interesting, and similar enough to have an understanding with each other.

When sextiles occur between planets they function smoothly together like a well oiled machine. There is a friendly, helpful vibe between the two planets, and they are able to achieve their mutual objectives together in a productive fashion. Communication and cooperation are easy, and there’s also a silly, playful camaraderie to the aspect. Like two siblings teasing each other. Going back to the Gemini /3rd house connection, this sector has to do with relationships where we have a natural familiarity with others, and feel free to say whatever pops into our heads at any given time. And so, sextiles allow us to feel supported, and free to say what we really think with regard to the planets in sextile by synastry. A lot of sextiles in synastry give a relaxed, informal, and open vibe between people where there’s a lot of banter, and exchanges of advice, tips, and recommendations.

And it’s true that sextiles provide opportunities…. I’ve literally had people come up to me and offer me free stuff during a sextile transit… It’s like events just flow together in the right way, to give you a chance to acquire or do something worthwhile.

Ceri,

I definitely feel the sextiles in my synastry--example,

My Venus sextile his Sun (1 orb)--my adoration toward him doesn't stop no matter what the situation,

My Moon setile his Asc (exact)--I'm aware of my intense emotional involvement with who he is, plus I'm completely committed to him,

My Mercury sextile his Mercury (3-4 orb)--I still feel this, despite the wider orb, as we can talk about ANYTHING under the sun and communication is a HUGE asset between us. I find that mostly we have similar views on most subjects, but even if we don't we can understand where the other is coming from.

So from personal experience alone, I would say sextiles are quite important in synastry. In fact, I even feel our asteroids in sextile in our synastry.

Altho I'm still learning, I would tend to agree with VenusDiSirius, in that sextiles are spicy. I would say they add the spice that trines can sometimes lack due to too much complacency. Meaning that trines altho helpful in any synastry, can sometimes also be too blah, while setiles can add ease but also spice.

Hope this helps

This is wonderful to hear about sextiles in synastry. Pisces friend and I have tons of sextiles from 0 - 3 degrees. I always gathered from reading they were so-so, and did not really add too much. Then I wondered, "Why do we have such a great connection? Oh, it must be some other aspects contributing to that." We just have soo many sextiles in our synastry chart.
Thank you!
*SEX*tiles! Comfortable togetherness with a mixture of spice. Cannot beat that.

This is my feeling about sextiles also. Trines are the same element and they flow together so naturally and easily, that too many of them in synastry can be uneventful. There wouldn’t be enough growth and change in the relationship. You and that person would just agree about everything all the time. And the relationship has nowhere to ‘go‘. Don’t get me wrong, I love trines and they do have their place. Trines show what parts of the relationship we can always count on to run smoothly, and they give us stability and relief from difficulties elsewhere in the synastry…

Sextiles though, are definitely more dynamic then trines. They do add ‘spice’. Sextiles occur between planets that are in different yet harmonious elements. They are agreeable to each other but they also learn from each other, and grow as a result of the experience. Two planets in sextile tend to exchange energy in way that promotes learning and opportunity for growth… They are curious about each other’s differences, and eager to learn more about each other… And yet their similarities give them an innate sense of familiarity, and tolerance with each other. Sextiles add a kind of friendly excitement, a playful attitude, and plenty of discussion to a relationship in synastry.

Fire teaches Air how to get excited, and riled up about things.

Air teaches Fire how to ‘chill out’, and be more objective.

Earth teaches Water how to become more practical, and be more grounded.

Water teaches Earth how to mellow out, and be less rigid.

My Granma and her second husband have been married over 30 years. The only traditional attraction aspect I saw in their synastry is his Mars in Aries sextile her Venus in Gemini…. I don’t know the exact degrees of their Moons… But she has a Cancer Sun, Virgo Moon and He has a Libra Sun, Taurus Moon… In terms of attraction aspects, his Sun can only semi-sextile her Moon, but her Sun can potentially sextile his Moon… Or their moons could be trined…. In any case, the only attraction aspects between them are sextiles.

Attraction aspects, like Mars/Venus, that are sextiles tend to be very playful and flirty. My Granma and her second husband do have a kind of playful banter between them. They kind of tease each other in a friendly way.

Yes, I totally agree with this, as growth and transformation is part of the very foundation of my synastry with him. And we are able to show a lot of tolerance toward each other during the growth, even keep nudging each other to grow more.

And tho we've loved each other for several years now, I still feel an excitement even in having a simple phone conversation with him. That hasn't changed at all since the beginning. So the friendly excitement (I would actually liken it more to an electric current type of excitement ), and the playfulness also apply ... in my synastry at least.

Ceri,

I forgot to write this in my earlier post ...

I also have my Moon sextile his Moon. It's at a wider orb of 5-6. But I still feel it as a complete emotional compatibility, as in ... a complementarity that I've never had with anyone else before.

Now this could be because I have 1H Moon (which is considered more Pisces-like in nature) and he has Pisces Moon.

It could also be because my IC in Cancer is exactly conjunct his Sun in Cancer (both being similarly emotional in nature).

Dunno, but my own sensing of different energies tells me that about our emotions ... though they're not always the same at any given time ... yet there is always this deep empathy and understanding of whatever the other is going through.

Our NN are also sextile at the wider orb of 5. I don't know if this can actually be felt. But for me this is also important in terms of our life directions being in synch, which they are.

So as you can see we have quite a bit of sextiles in our synastry

thank you all for your input.

So to summarize it, most of you see them as pretty important, and a little spicey, I like that.

I noticed that i seem to have a preference for the Sun-Moon-sextile in synastry. From the top of my head I recall two crushes who had their Sun sextile my Moon, and one who had his Moon sextile my Sun. The orb was very narrow. zero, one and two degrees.

Lotis White,

I liked your deduction f the sextile having 3rd house/ gemini flavour.
But doesn`t that mean it is not necessary deep, though being entertaining, maybe even a tad flirtative?

Would the square have Cancer/ 4th house flavour? and the trine Leo / 5th house flavour?

Hi Ceri,

I think whether or not the connection is ‘deep’ depends on what planets are in sextile… Aspects involving Pluto or the Moon could feel quite profound emotionally, to finally have that flowing yet stimulating connection with someone, in an intimate way.

I tend to look at aspects as taking on some of the flavor of the first zodiac sign they occur in… So yes to your question….

Squares have a primal, feeling vibe like Cancer, and I’ll elaborate on this one to give an example of what I mean.

The 1st square occurs in the sign of Cancer…. Which can explain why squares can be so painful, or even traumatic, on an emotional level. They can cause us to question our selves, and perhaps experience some insecurity, and self-doubt. Natal Squares can be quite poignant, and can often feel like a tragic flaw that we are quite touché about…. Where we feel uncertain of ourselves, or even shy…. This is until we are able to summon the courage overcome our blockages, and confront an issue. Squares challenge us to overcome our inner uncertainty and take action to solve our problems. Cancer is a cardinal sign, and as such squares ultimately show ambition to overcome the odds regardless of what gets in your way. They show where we feel ‘weak’ or blocked, and also where we feel most driven and motivated to preserve our security. And squares do seem to have a lot to do with having your security, or emotional well being, threatened in someway. When a crab feels threatened and backed up against the wall they will fight. So yeah, overcoming uncertainty and taking action is a big theme for squares. Of course, a lot also depends on which planets are squaring…. Mars square the Sun my show a very aggressive person, but this aggression may be part of a defense mechanism they have developed because of a secret fear that they are actually weak. So they overcompensate to prove that no one can push them around….

I think trines are like Leo, in that they show a natural talent we have that just flows out from our being. Trines also tend to show where we feel confident and sure of ourselves, and what we are capable of doing. In relationships trines show what parts of the relationship we feel confident about, because the two planets in trine flow together so well, that we just naturally trust in it. There is also the feeling of specialness and glory that comes form Leo in trines… For example, If you had someone whose Mercury trines your Venus… You may feel that this person knows just how to sweet talk you, that they can do it like no one else you’ve ever known, and that this part of the relationship is so special… How could anyone else compete! The trined parts of a relationship can be easily romanticized because they run so smoothly, and appear to be ‘perfect’.

I Also think conjunctions have a leaping forward together vibe, and an intensity, like Aries.

And Oppositions have a lot to do with contrasting, comparing, debating and taking turns, like Libra.

Quincunxes occur in the signs Virgo and Scorpio in the natural zodiac, and this aspect definitely is connected with irritating health issues on a physical level, and weird, awkward vibes of a psychological level. Like Virgo and Scorpio.

So yeah, that’s my take.

Sextiles in the natal chart, compliments conjunctions and trines through the houses. Lets say that the second house ($ and personal property) has a stand alone Venus within. Sextiles to the second are the twelfth and fourth houses. If Venus is sextile planets in the twelfth, then the aspect suggest a fairly strong savings account. If the fourth house is empty, then transiting planets through the fourth will sextile Venus and create potential short term benefits from activities surrounding the fourth house. If the twelfth and fourth houses have planets in them, then those planets may be in trine aspect. If Venus in the second was in sextile to the planets in the twelfth, then it will also be in sextile with some of the planets in the fourth. In this case, the second house Venus bridges the gap in the trine aspects between the twelfth and fourth houses. Every house has two complimentary sextile houses supporting it.

I once heard someone put it like this. Use 5 degree orbs for 0, 60, 90, 120 & 180 aspects. Use 3 degre orgs for 30, 45, 135 and, 150 aspects.

Say you are putting new carpet in your home:

The Conjunction = putting new wall to wall carpet in the whole house.

The Trine = putting new carpet only in the up stars level.

The Sextile = putting new carpet in just one bedroom.

The Semi-sextile = putting a carpet mat in front of the front door.

The sextile in your natal chart has a powerful effect in your Solar transits. Here are the aspect combinations, in the Solar transit, for VE 60 JP:

S = transiting Sun.

S Conjunct VE 60 JP

S Sextile VE 120 JP

S Square VE

S Trine VE 180 JP

S Opposition VE 120 JP

S Trine VE 60 JP

S Square VE

and

S Sextile VE 0 JP

No matter what planets, in your natal, are in sextile, the sextile aspect, although not as strong as the trine, is an aspect you should not turn your nose up to. It has beneficial power.

Now, In relation to Synastry, if your natal was VE 60 JP, then substitute the other person's planet for the Sun in the transit. i.e. Replace the S, above, with MR (the other person's Mars), this would be the Synastry aspect combo result.

I always thought sextiles were really a minor aspect and didn't have much significance but I'll have to rethink that.I have quite a few in my chart.I have Venus sextile Pluto in my chart and also with others around my age.I was wondering, what would be the difference between having Venus conjunct Pluto in synastry and Venus sextile Pluto-------with Venus conjunct Pluto you are usually completely obsessed and transfixed, among other things, with the other person. What is it like with the sextile--is the passion still there but just toned down a bit (if that is even possible with real passion, isn't it usually all or nothing?)
Just wondering how Venus sextile Pluto might play out in synastry.

Hi hodad,

If you are just talking about the Synastry aspect of VE 60 P, then the indication suggest that the love and passion and possessiveness is tempered to the point of appreciable balance, of not too much and not too little.

If you have VE 60 P in your natal chart, then subtract the JP in (slowpoke) above for your P. This represents all of the different ways you can have a Synastry aspect with VE and P.

Replace the S for any planet you wish of the other person. The results will be all of the Synastry aspect possibilities you will have with the other person. Mind you, you can use all of the planets of the other person to hit any number of your natal aspects. So your potential for a lot of VE and P aspects is great but highly unlikely.

I also think that the sextile is important in synastry because this aspect represents the benefits that come from activity and productivity - the opportunity to grow and develop in a way that stimulating, but not stressful.

To the Pythagoreans, 6 was the perfect number since, when multiplied by itself it results in the number itself (6 X 6 = 42 ~ 4 + 2 = 6). The 6 was also considered to be a perfect number because ~ 1 + 2 + 3 = 6. Also, 6 is the first NEW number that is the product of two other numbers (1x1 is still 1, and 1x2 is still 2, 3 x 1 is still 3, but 3 x 2 creates the first new number which is 6). Because of this the 6 or sextile was considered to be an aspect that combines the ease, harmony, good luck, synthesis of the 3 (trine) with the polarity and awareness of the number 2 (opp). This is why the sextile represents the capacity to express the innate harmony of a trine (which is inherently passive) in an active, productive, and successful manner. The sextile therefore brings good fortune, but through effort, productivity, and activity. The sextile has been related to harmony, creation, love, marriage, domestic happiness, and matters of the heart by some numerologists. Wherever the sextile is found, it is thought to indicate a high likelihood of success and prosperity through work efforts. In some traditions the sextile and the number 6 are associated with the planet Venus (love), whereas in others (i.e. esoteric psychology), the 6 signifies Jupiter and the religious elements of faith in leadership and tolerance.

Just as an added thought ...
I have always been interested in the association of Jupiter with the sextile, due to a statement that I have seen in the Clairvision astrology interpretations where they state : "The fact that Jupiter has an affinity with the number 6 reinforces the power of all sextiles to Jupiter." I often wondered what that meant, and I read lately that this concept also stems from the Platonic tradition. Ficino (a 15th century philosopher, astronomer and reviver of neoplatonism)built on the Platonic idea that all even numbers (starting with 2) were "feminine" and odd numbers were "masculine" therefore the first perfect number where these are combined is "6" (3x2). Ficini concluded that "6" therefore signifies constancy, equality, temperance, and thus perfection as revealed in the Jovian (Jupiter) "complexion" in man, a complexion as rare as the perfect number. Six also signifies the "whole harmony of celestials" under the leadership of Jove (Jupiter), the 6th (and final) celestial body in Platonic astrology. Not only was the impetus to merge male and female associated with 6, but so too was the "opportunitas" for marriage itself. The Jovian, the perfect 6, was thought to be the key for capturing the best auspices in any undertaking; for it is "neither wanting nor overflowing, neither lacking nor exceeding." Following this logic, Ficino put forward the idea that the we should elect the sextile as the aspect attributed to Jove, due to its embodiment of the attributes of the number 6 - i.e. Of all the aspects Jupiter makes to other planets, the sextile is the most powerful as their energies are closely aligned. With the associations described above, synastry sextiles could possibly be a powerful factor for compatibility, particularly if Jupiter is involved????

Thank you all for your deep, thorough and insightful responses. It gives me much stuff to think about.

Lotiswhite,
brilliant deduction and description as always.

If you had to reduce each aspect to a single keyword (well okay noun AND adjective if you want) what would they be?

Taineberry,

it`s great to read you again.
Where have you been?

I read that as well, the 6 representing the female and masculine aspects in a balanced manner.
Though this is true for the number 6, it doesn`t really show in the signs that are connected through sextile, does it?
It is both either masculine or feminine elements being connected to each other.

You want to have sextiles in synastry. They open the relationship or at least give opportunities to develop it. But, you have to go and get it. It does not come or happen by itself. Sextiles are not stronger of weaker than other major aspects.

All depends on the orbs. A Sun/Venus sextile with 0 degree orb will be felt more than Moon/Venus trine with 5 degree orb.
