Pretty much the same way you initially would an adult chart. I believe it is best to focus on their Sun-Moon, 5th and 4th houses (rulers) because they have yet to progress into their chart elsewhere, but will be strongly in touch with their solar/lunar energies in their purest form. My son is very much his Sun and Moon, (still can't thank NJ enough for when she shared her experiences as a Libra/Aries axis child)~
Your 4th house is naturally ruled by Cancer-Moon, and 5th by Leo-Sun. They represent life at home, family, elders, childhood. (and later in life become our roots, real estate, grandparents-elders/retirement; hobbies, romances, creative endeavors or outlets *4-5h*)
If you want to understand their early academic capability/struggles, I'd also look through the 3rd. If there is something troubling them, the 12th... (ruler by natal and natural order).
It doesn't really change, but you would want to focus in on the strongest energies because they have yet to "mature" into their other placements, like Kero pointed out~
Ascendant is always innately there, but I find in children they're still learning how to be themselves, what is expected of them, they're so honest and untainted by the world, that the ASC (by node and ruler) usually flickers between showing strongly and nod at all... (save where the Sun/Moon is tied into it.) lol
My son is only 6 now, but every bit of his chart seems to shine through... but, his chart is one where the webbing is interconnected very strongly between angle, nodal axis, and planets to tight aspect. Moon cnj IC opp Sun on MC... Leo rising with Saturn in the 1st trine/sextile Sun-Moon, and Jupiter in Sagittarius trine/sextile Sun-Moon (IC/MC) as well. With previous discussions here in 2.0, and lala's help finding potential aspects that indicate attention disorders, delays... even that falls prominently with him. It is an eye-opening experience to look at a child's chart, especially when you are close to that child enough to see the accuracy between what you've observed offhand and researched in their chart. lol I find it even more interesting than the curious things found in the charts of parents/grandparents, lovers and friends. ^^; The expressions of the planets are so simple, they're unmistakable!
If I could sum up my son in three words it would be Aries, Libra, Leo... lol
My brother as well... he's a deadringer for his signs and placements although he's certainly much older and has grown into his chart (progressed even). He's always been the Cappy with a tactless way of throwing his excitement and anger at others verbally (Sag Mars semisxt Cap Merc, trine Leo Moon on DSC).
I think the little things show more after (roughly) puberty. (I believe it's something like 14 years for Saturn to make it into the chart where it will start "giving order" to our lives, by that time we often go through a square/opp to major parts of our chart by the mighty ringed taskmaster.) >.<;
I think by the 14th year, natives will receive Uranus vs Saturn effect... in the chart (not necessarily to each other) through transit. Not quite a return, but they would have similar effects as the full return of these, and when Saturn and Uranus are both triggered at once in transit there is usually some kind of inevitable life changes.
Before that time, Saturn and Uranus appear to be mostly docile for children. (but outers may play more of a part if the child were to have them on personal planets, but, I think it would still be ambiguous in effect compared to later years).
~__~; I hope this was a little helpful!
let us know what ya find there~~! good luck!
