Reincarnation and Your Ascendant
In the last issue, Kriyananda continued his discussion of rebirth and reincarnation and how they relate to spiritual evolution. He explained that the astrological sign (one of the 12 constellations of the zodiac) that appears on the horizon at the time of our birth reveals our “horizon” of awareness and our latent spiritual unfoldment. This sign is called the rising sign, or ascendant.

In this issue, Kriyananda outlines the first six ascendants and the accompanying lessons to be learned in this lifetime for those born with those ascendants. (The last six ascendants will be explained in the next issue.) As we master the lessons, we raise our state of consciousness and achieve what Kriyananda calls our “ascension.”

You can determine your ascendant if you know your time of birth and the order of the signs of the zodiac. (Okay, here they are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Saggitarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.) Briefly, the ascendant sign at dawn is generally the same as the sun sign, and it changes every two hours, moving to the next sign. During the earth’s full rotation every 24 hours, each of the 12 signs will appear on the horizon for two hours.

Here’s an example. Say you were born during the time of Scorpio (October 23-November 22) at sunrise. If your parents lived on Lake Michigan and your mother looked East out over the lake at the moment of your birth, she would see the constellation Scorpio. Hence, Scorpio would be your rising sign. (However, the sky is becoming light at dawn, so it really would not be visible.) If you were born two hours later, the earth will have rotated 30 degrees so that Sagittarius would then be on the horizon, and your ascendant would be Sagittarius. Likewise, if you were born two hours before dawn, the ascendant would be Libra, the previous sign, and so on. Of course, daylight savings time also needs to be factored in. Similarly, if you are an Aries born at dawn, your rising sign would probably be Aries, and you can calculate from there.

You can also find your ascendant on various astrology Internet sites, but if your birth time is on the edge of the two-hour period, it could be one sign off. It’s best to consult a professional astrologer to be certain.

Following are Kriyananda’s insights regarding your ascendant to help further your path to enlightenment:

Aries Ascendant
Aries ascendants are symbolical of a new beginning. When their ascension manifests, it manifests very quickly and is best achieved through initiative and courage.
If you have an Aries ascendant, you have just reached a new level of evolution. Having mastered one set of life lessons, you are ready for a new and more difficult challenge. Because this level of evolution is new, you are by nature more insecure and thus seek, to a greater or lesser degree, to control others and events around you.
After a series of lifetimes doing what was important to others, you now seek to balance this out by returning to work at what is important to you. In past lives, people leaned heavily upon you; thus, you lost your personal identity and may find it difficult to re-establish it in this incarnation. The danger here is that you may feel you are primarily a sexual being. You have gained good career karma from your past actions, and you can have excellent business success if you do not get sidetracked because of your attitude and actions regarding sex.
The vital factor to be realized is that in this incarnation you need to start at the beginning in self-development. The key lesson for you to understand is that love relationships are formed based on love and affection, not upon name or fame.

Taurus ascendant
Your ascension will be achieved slowly, but surely, through quietness and closeness to nature because you have an innate attunement to the rhythms of nature. You are your memory track; thus, your greatest treasure is remaining in contact with all parts of your being. People with Taurus ascendants are souls who often reincarnate to help humanity deal with their financial imbalances.
From past-life experiences, you have acquired greater practical knowledge than most souls; however, you might be slow to use this wisdom because often you are a late bloomer. In the past incarnations, you have learned survival skills in dealing with life; therefore, just below your conscious mind is a wealth of wisdom. Almost all people with Taurus ascendants have a soothing aura, which helps other souls feel stable and secure.
In past lives you have proven yourself to yourself and, therefore, do not need to prove yourself to others. Some incarnation lessons to be learned are to overcome “slowness” and perchance possessiveness. Your key lesson is to be sure that your head rules your heart, not the other way around.

Gemini ascendant
Gemini ascendant ascension is achieved fastest through learning to concentrate, which will stabilize your fluctuating surface mind states. Many souls with Gemini ascendants reincarnate after leading lives of brilliance and fame. In this incarnation, you take refuge in using your mercurial gifts in quiet, mental games of one-upmanship because you do not really trust people.
The famous dual nature associated with Gemini may simply be an identity shift to a past personality of which you find it hard to let go.
Your best nature is revealed when you work with others in a hands-on way. You establish a bond, you become absorbed in a physical task and your mind can then truly relax.
Your key incarnation lessons are to overcome your nervous energy and then move off your surface mind and stop analyzing everything to death.

Cancer ascendant
Your ascension is best achieved through transcending your mind’s emotions. Living on or near water, which produces a womb-like environment, will speed up your ascension.
You have reincarnated for special and personal reasons, the most important of which is your need to go places in order to meet others with whom you had vital links in past incarnations. The people you meet in this incarnation are not new relationships, but old ones from past lives. Every relationship will pick up from where it left off in a past life.
Those you deal with in business and marriages are, most likely, former family members. In short, you are here in this incarnation to resolve unfinished business with them. Of course, the business to be resolved is with you and your attitude--your mind states. If a relationship was difficult in the past, then the task for this incarnation is to improve that relationship. To improve relationships, you need to improve your attitude. In short, you are the problem, and only you can solve it.
You tend to live vicariously with the attitude that you know better than everyone and have come to save the world (of people around you). Your lesson is to let go of this “mother” attitude and learn to appreciate and accept other people for who and what they are, rather than accepting them only through their role in your life, i.e., they are in your life so you can tell them how they should live. If you let go of this attitude, the pain will end, your relationships will improve, bringing peace and happiness into your mind, and you will be able to move on with your spiritual evolution.
Remember, it begins with you correcting your mind-- not by correcting their lives. However, your mind does not really want to change; it wants to save people, which means insisting they do it your way. The key lesson for you is to become aware that almost all of the sensitive issues between you and others have been caused by primordial, psychic wounds from the past.
You have an affinity to small children, as they have not yet entered into your battlefield. They have special wisdom to give you. If you can hear it, it will be a blessing in the years to come. Their wisdom will save you (and others), a great deal of pain and suffering. Perchance you should understand more deeply that “out of the mouths of babes” are words of wisdom just for you.

Leo ascendant
Your ascension is best achieved through love and the ability to fully express your being. Today, those incarnating with a Leo ascendant have reincarnated from the ancient Atlantean race, which was the prevailing culture that existed around 12,000 years ago.
The Leo ascendant brings the realization that every being contains immeasurable untapped abilities. Your task is to inspire all to manifest their divine potentiality, bringing to human consciousness the essence of the forthcoming Age of Aquarius (in about 400 earth years). Your task is to set the evolutionary standard for this new age.
You most likely got into trouble because your underdeveloped maturity caused you to use your mind powers for self-aggrandizement. Therefore, in this incarnation, the lesson you need to master is to become more mature, which is to say using your personality and “powers” to benefit others and to walk the spiritual path. Virgo ascendant
Your ascension is best achieved through self-discipline and positive actions. A good diet and positive thoughts are essential.
Wherever you were in your past lives--perchance a census taker for Rome--you developed a keen sense for details. In the past, you suffered personal physical deprivation, and you have carried it over into this lifetime as a personal psychological deprivation.
The key lesson to be learned in this incarnation is to overcome your basic states of pessimism and disapproval left over from a past life when you were the “boss” telling everyone how to do their job, i.e., the way you wanted it done, not the correct way. Things went wrong, and you worried a great deal. Worrying became a mind habit, and in this incarnation your mind has a strong tendency to worry--most likely regarding all things trivial. In this lifetime, you need to learn to be a happy worker.
The key lesson is to learn that there is nothing to be fearful about. Forget your ego-self, employ your talent and skills, and make this world a better place. Then your “hurts” from the past will be healed.
The law of karma says that you get to try as many times as needed until you get it right. This will frighten almost everyone; however, for a perfectionist like you, this is a spiritual comfort.

Libra ascendant
Your ascension is best achieved through establishing deeper, inner harmony with others, but not by simply agreeing with everyone. Moderation and detachment are the essential qualities for this process to work for you.
This is a difficult ascendant to read because you have had so many different vocations and experiences in your past lives that there is no clear thread to follow. In a sense, you are a “jack of all trades and a master of none.” It is as if you were swept away by air currents and have not followed any self-awareness course. You are a general, at heart. How much this trait will exhibit itself and where it will manifest itself--on a battlefield or in the bedroom--depends upon other karmic forces.
All Libra ascendant people have come from a highly developed culture in their past lives. Here is where a problem arises. Highly developed cultures have highly developed social mores--rules, rules and more rules--which you disliked and physically revolted against. In this incarnation, you are mentally revolting against the rules of your culture. The focus in this lifetime is on your love life—--be it lover or family--in which they try to “run your life” and you rule theirs. The platinum rule for you is to love others far, far more than you love yourself.

Scorpio ascendant
Your ascension is best achieved through focus and singleness of purpose, re-channeling your passions and conquering your demons. The key lesson for you to learn is to transmute your scorpion nature into an eagle nature.
Very often, with a Scorpio ascendant, you have returned with your sun in the same degree as the ascendant. Because your mind is fixed, it is harder to learn the lessons you need to learn at the depth of your being.
Furthermore, you had a mystical experience near the time of your physical death. You also had profound experiences, which you have forgotten except for a vague memory of something greater and more powerful than the earth life. Your ascension is best achieved through travel, prayer and faith in yourself. In the past, you were from a highborn family but were physically restrained and restricted in some way. Most likely you were imprisoned for being a religious or political dissenter. In order to retain your sanity, you began to live in a vivid mental world. Capricorn ascendant
Your ascension is best achieved through self-discipline, moderation and generosity. You need warmth, more warmth and still more warmth. The great lesson to be learned in this incarnation is to completely overcome fear. You, like those souls who have Cancer ascendants, have primarily reincarnated to work off constrictive karma caused by your fearfulness (which others perceive as coldness), while not creating afresh the same type of karma as in your past lives.
There are certain people you need to meet in this incarnation so you can balance past karma with them. This may not be as easy as you think because the last lifetime was not the first time you “hurt” them. Almost 97% of the people you have met or will meet in this incarnation are from your past lives. You will be picking up the relationships where you left them.
Your family members, main business partners, co-workers and “friends” are all from the past—--and very likely former family members. Be detached--not indifferent—--and free yourself and them.
Again, 97% of Capricorns have incarnated into the same religion, nationality and country as in the past. Also, many have picked up their career from a past life so they can complete the goal set in the past—--success in a position of power. Aquarius ascendant
Your ascension is best achieved through the realization that you are just like the rest of humanity, only more egotistical and arrogant. Transcend your ego self.
You tend to fall and stay down because your ego awareness is still trying to tell others how they should think and live. Beware of any first step you take in any venture, no matter how small. People incarnating with Aquarius ascendants have brought into this incarnation a special magic. If the ego can get out of the way, this magic will be a magnificent blessing to all life forms.
The true mystical lesson to master is for you to reveal that humanity is the brother and sister of God--not slave and master. The first step is to change your ego self and stop trying to change others. See them as brothers or sisters and come down to their level of understanding—--or should I say, come up to their level of love. At this time, you have the responsibility to improve the world, but only after you improve yourself.

Glaucus - I have no idea which system he uses. As far as Atlantis - I get it. I don't know if anyone else with leo ascendant has every felt a connection (now I know songwriter does) to past life via dreams and such but I would not be surprised. There is that almost gross attraction to past events/people/things, have we met before moments, and I know this place somehow or even how similar and different a particular past life is to present day circumstances and relationships and sometimes feeling like being so far off from fitting in to today's 'standards' or feeling like today's society is so behind. I know, for some reason, that large sized robots were used in the past so maybe that is why Kriyananda might have mentioned Atlantis / maybe people with leo ascendants might have asked him about living somewhere that was lush and far from today's version of cavemen life - I don't know but either way - I know there was a technologically advanced society in the past, there was separatism and there were people who actually lived like royalty whereas people who lived down the ways were simple, highly intuitive individuals. All knew of one another, mingled with one another for certain matters but didn't need to be with one another. There was a certain amount of respect for one another and no-one's skill was more 'important' than the other. I don't get the sense that one (simple, royal, etc) wanted to be the other and all were just as content with that. I also get the feeling that I was one of the simple folks who didn't want to mingle with the royals because I was content with the simple life and wanted to stay that way forever - I didn't get to the point of realizing that even though I was part of the 'simple' clan, it wouldn't make me any less 'simple' if I mingled with the 'royals' every now and then. I didn't get that we could both enjoy one another's company. I actually took it as a unnecessary burden to mingle with them because I'd rather be hanging out with the rest of the 'simple' folk. There were so many forms of entertainment on both sides - it was amazing. The royals didn't have to help the simples get off the island and the simples didn't have to tell the royals that some type of mega size tsunami was going to come and wipe the island out. For some reason, I know this.

T - I wonder if you share this ascendant with Suze Orman. I think she is fabulous and love to hear how she became one of the most popular financial advisors of all time. She could have ran off with what she knew or just let it slip by but she didn't and she is helping others to get on track financially today. It was with the help of the support and trust of others that she got her idea off the ground. One day a waittress getting tips and now she is the one giving tips.

also my Ascendant is in the actual Leo Constellation, and it's even conjunct theta Leo, Coxa (located on the back hip of the Lion)

what about people that aren't Leo Ascendant that believe having pastlives in Atlantis?

I am skeptical of using the Ascendant as a significator for pastlives, and more skeptical of using a zodiac sign for significator for specific civilization.
Of course, there is the issue of which zodiac to use. Not all astrologers use the tropical zodiac. Vedic Astrologers use the Sidereal Zodiac with the combination of nakshatras which are lunar mansions. Carl Fagan type astrologers use the Sidereal Zodiac.

also how come not all ascendants were associated with certain civilizations?

I do not identify with my aries asc, I
never have. It's just not me. I am aggressive only in things that most every human would be aggressive in (protecting my children, family, friends) but I have never been super ambitious and driven.

i do tend to dislike conflicts so i pretty much agree with people when in fact i don´t most of the times ( i dont do this when in family or among friends..just casual people)

i always loved the renaissance time,all that evoqued the unique art and development of beauty of those times...and Louis...awww how i dreamt when i saw The Man in the Iron Masq....

yup...i pretty much believe in what i feel,not in what society says that i have to do,think or feel...im a rebell of thought.free spirit.

In Vedic Astrology, Ketu (South Lunar Node) is said to be significator for moksha,liberation,enlightenment

in Vedic Astrology, I have Ketu in 12th which I read is a potential placement for moksha(release from the cycle of death and rebirth),liberation,enlightenment but also much loss and suffering too.

from the materialistic standpoint,it can really suck

also in Vedic Astrology, 12th house is associated with long-distance travel or living abroad,sexual pleasure,confinement,hospitalization,expenses

for example, I have Cancer 12th house. Therefore Moon is my 12th house ruler. It's conjunct my Mars (my yoga karaka because it rules my Aries 9th house which is a trikona and my Scorpio 4th house which is a kendra) in Aquarius in 7th house, aspected by 6th/7th house ruler Saturn in Taurus in 10th which also aspects Ketu in Cancer in 12th.

that's common for Western Astrologers to view the 12th house as being associated with pastlife karma. I don't how they ended up viewing the 12th house like that.

the 12th house has also been associated with fears,phobias,anxieties

it makes me think how fears,phobias,anxieties are thought to have originated in pastlives like what pastlife regression therapist Dr. Brian L. Weiss believes.
