I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseam, but I don't feel like reviving old threads (or searching for them).

Do you believe that the square is more difficult to master, or the opposition?

I recently noticed a few people saying that they think squares are more challenging, but I have been under the impression that oppositions were harder?

I trust people's astrological insight and experience here, so I would love to hear what everyone thinks regarding the differences between these two aspects.

Squares are harder because the square is between signs that are incompatible elements and the opposition is between signs in compatible elements.

I see them as both difficult, with the square you get no help, it all falls to you to work out -- very internalized. The opposition can give a little more guidance because outside forces or people can respond to it and thus give the person feedback on how this energy is working or a lack.

I don't have much personal experience with oppositions as my chart is quite focused. But I have many squares and from my own experience squares are felt from childhood and forever until the person dies. I haven't died yet, but my squares has still not let up, I recognize them and can work better with them though. Squares can get better but not always. Sometimes life circumstances can make squares worse...squares are deep and can't be glossed over, they truly show the parts of a person that is like steel but also sensitive to hurt, pain and loss. Squares are where you "pump iron" everyday. Squares are places in the chart where people really can't understand your motivations, places where people or you yourself think you are off the rails.

Squares can be angry and/or aggressive, competitive. They can have a hard time expressing themselves properly and cause irritation to the person, but not always, sometimes the square works more like a well oiled engine, gently humming in the background. Squares have a lot of energy and never sleep, they are always awake and deeply motivated. You can't stop thinking about your squares, they become a part of the problems in your life -- this is because squares want your full undivided attention. During childhood they mostly cause confusion. Adults try to control you, because deep down they know you have a powerful will within you based on the planets in square. Most times, it's your squares which caused the most problems for you when you disobeyed or an adult disciplined you.

A square can make you uncomfortable especially when it comes to meaningful relationships. A square is like a locomotive, once it starts it keeps going...for better or worse. People can usually sense your squares when you are agitated the most, when you are angry all your squares come out to play. Squares are jumpy and reactive -- they can blurt out things, become nervous or totally destroy something -- self-sabotage. Squares work hard to manifest energy, and when they begin to become more aware as in internal purpose, they can work the most beautifully because of all the energy behind the aspect. Squares make you work for everything...they can be innovative, driven and brilliant. Squares are powerhouses of energy. All those red lines in your chart is like dynamite -- sometimes they can detonate and other times they just smolder waiting for opportunities and events to occur so that you can show the World and more important yourself, that you had it all along, you just needed to harness and ground it to your soul into workable form. Squares are wild and free, they need discipline and a strategy.

Squares do show Health problems, so they are very telling in medical astrology.

I personally agree that there is "easier squares" based on planetary energy. A Venus square Moon aspect is very different from a Mars square Uranus. Also applying and separating also matters. Mars, Pluto, Saturn squares will always have more power behind them because these are powerful planets symbolically, including Uranus. Uranus is a disrupter and with already square energy it can cause deep problems with connecting to life and all its variations.

I have some tight squares, but no oppositions, so I don't really know how an opposition feels. But the square is pretty much exactly like what Comatoes (hilarious name, btW! ) described.

The squares cause a lot of internal friction. If they are between powerful planets (Mars, Pluto, Saturn) - they do bring immense stores of energy, but if not channeled properly, that energy just simmers and boils inside.

To express it visually, squares feel like this -->

Oppositions probably feel like this -->

Folks with oppositions, please share your PoV ...

I agree with Comatoes. I do not have oppositions but squares. Although I have both a tight and a wide orb, the wide orb I can still feel the energy strongly.

My Venus is at her strong position, so my square to Mars is not that hard.

My Pluto is at his strong position, so he takes control the weak sun, it is the hard square for me although I have a very wide orb.

My Pluto is at his strong position so is my mercury, I like how this power of thoughts.

I am dealing FAR better with my Pluto squares to Sun, Moon and Mercury than I do Moon opp. Sun, Venus, Mercury, Saturn!
Actually, I m not dealing well with Uranus opp. Jupiter either :-/
I have never really liked oppositions in relationships, just to mention those too, but don't mind squares at all!

I have mars opposition sun, very tight aspect. I can truly say that I do feel it, mostly in the way of a quick temper.

I'm starting to believe that squares might actually be more difficult (I have plenty of both in my chart), but I would still like to hear more from people who have a dash of both in their charts?

I'm not sure. I have Jupiter opposite Pluto which I've heard is supposed to be power hungry, but I'm not. The Saturn squares to my Jupiter, Mercury, and pluto, might have something to do with that - I definitely feel that square when it comes to feeling limits. Sometimes Jupiter and Saturn will work together, but not so much anymore.

I'm trying to remember what else I have. The Moon/Venus/Nodes square Mars, and Sun opposite Uranus. I also currently have the sun in my eyes, and keep having to fix typos. back later.

My square and opposition are bundled up(if that makes sense). In a T-square formation.

So its really hard to tell as to which is reacting and "stronger" than which.

I notice that with Moon/Mars square, the feelings are tender.

With Moon/Mercury opposition, there is a frustration in trying to get reasoning and feelings to be on the same page.

I have always thought that oppositions were the toughest. They to me seem to be very extreme in their expression.

I can completely identify with that!

I have a couple of T-squares (one is an "almost" T-square, but I don't consider 9* orbs).

So it's also difficult for me to make distinctions with the energies sometimes.

I've read that oppositions are more difficult, because the energies are at odds with each other in their very essence, and that squares indicate an area that requires work and compromise.

Sometimes, the squares do seem tougher to me, I think.

But logically, it kind of doesn't make sense, unless you consider what one poster said about the oppositions basically being two sides of the same coin, or something to that effect.

***Edit***
It was Athenegoddess who said that the oppositions are easier because the elements are compatible, unlike the squares.

I was sort of close with the coin analogy, lol.

But it does sort of make sense that way.

Hi Violets!

Merry Christmas!

I have three t-squares as I've said many times...

Cap sun square Aries Jupiter & Libra Pluto
Pisces moon square Gemini Mars & Sag Neptune
Scorpio Uranus square Aqua Mercury & Leo Saturn

In my reading, squares are considered harder than oppositions.

I've felt tense so long it doesn't seem like tension. I only know I'm tense because once in a blue moon, it stops. It's hard to sort everything out, energy-wise.

Oppositions:
1) Jupiter opposing Pluto - I never think of this, really.
2) Mars opposing Neptune - this aspect has a "good" reputation of being seductive, and that's all I know

^^ These two oppositions form a Mystic Rectangle which offsets some of the tension.

3) Saturn opposing Mercury - may be the worst aspect in my chart. I blame a lot on this.

Squares:
1) Sun square Pluto - makes me feel fundamentally screwed up
2) Sun square Jupiter - I overdo everything. Like this post. Way too long already.
3) Moon square Neptune - Where do I begin? Or end? Who am I? *floats away*
4) Moon square Mars - I annoy myself
5) Uranus square Saturn - Let's just live without structure forever, k?
6) Uranus square Mercury - I like this one, it's actually more kooky and fun than troublesome.

Conclusion: I think my OPPOSITION of Saturn to Mercury feels worst, because its effects are so obvious to everyone. However, it wouldn't be so bad if my whole life didn't feel so tangled up and serious. Then I wouldn't need Mercury so much to try and gloss things over and rationalize what has become a strange, unrelatable life. They say the unexamined life is not worth living...but my Mercury struggles with that examination...so where does that leave me? I just don't know.

You as well, Faith!

Boy, that's a lot to chew on (and thank you so much for your insight).

I'm not familiar with Saturn opposite Mercury, I'm not sure if I know anyone in my face-to-face life who has that placement...

I know that I have a really difficult time with my Saturn square Pluto, and of course with my Sun/Moon square NN.

Sun/Moon square Neptune... I don't know. I guess I'm just accustomed to it, although it does give me a hazy concept of how other people see me, whether good or bad...and it also gives others a hazy view of who I truly am (layers and layers).

But...Venus opposite Pluto is not enjoyable, and Uranus opposite MC is kind of a pain when paired with Saturn in H11.

Meh.

I think, for me, that my Nodes squared by luminaries, and Pluto square Saturn are the most difficult.

Mars square Uranus is no picnic either, but it's easier if I have alone time to work out or do some sort of heavy labor.

Aaannyway.

I hope your holidays are lovely.

True for me. I went to bed feeling okay last night, finally, and then went into full grief mode today. I held it in until this evening. God, this whole month has been messed up, and it used to be my favourite time of year.

I really wish I had Saturn trine Jupiter, instead of square. Same with Pluto, and especially Mercury.

Faith, I saw something on facebook that reminded me of both of us, yesterday. I'll try to find it.

I can't find it. This is me, currently, though: http://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/t31.0-8/739817_594545820693269_3410050196362444732_o.jpg

A little Moon square Mars humour.
