hamilton airbase is very near me, not only abandoned but now the site of extensive housing development despite rumours of heavy toxic residue...some of the hangars are still there in between the expensive new homes laid out all round....

the other local airfield, san rafael, is a mystery to me though i have heard about it.

is this an interest of yours?

Dee I read about a town that had been abandoned in America because of underground fires that had been raging for decades, because of mining I think. Does this ring any bells with you?

Wheels, I think you are referring to Centralia, Pennsylvania. There has been an underground mine fire going on there since the 1960s. There are quite a few theories on how the fire started, but no definite cause. Centralia was the inspiration for Silent Hill.

40 years!? how can it still be burning? isn't there anyway of sealing it off so there's no oxygen for it? how weird.

OOh, thanks Musette and Dee. Great information! Hello Musette, and welcome by the way! I share your fascination with this Dee, I don't know why! I think Scorpio in the IC for me - what do you reckon for yourself? There's an interesting village in Wales that was abandoned because the English wanted to flood the valley for a reservoir. There was a huge political uproar over it, with people refusing to leave the farms they'd inhabited since forever. The village sits intact on the bottom of this huge lake. That always gives me shivers!

Thanks for the welcome, Wheels! Silent Hill was a series of video games. There was a movie made based on them and a sequel (Silent Hill 2) is being made now. The video games are atmospheric and quite scary. If you watch the movie, you'll see people dressed like miners wandering around, which is a tip of the hat to Centralia's influence.
