Seriously. I know different people find different things funny, but it also seems to me that some people are without any type of humour. I do not understand this. How do people get through life without a sense of humour of any kind? Are there really people with no sense of humour?IP: Logged |

Yeah, possible, pire. I guess I just don't understand it. I need to get through life with the ability to laugh at most things.IP: Logged |

Plenty of people can't do silly. Always walk round so serious, can't have a light break and just be silly. No sense of humour at all, that can go with serious mental health problems. This is just my impression, not even a theory, but if you know someone who is paranoid or delusional, you might have spotted that laughing and joking about things with ease, no, just not. Good points, I think, bm.Plenty of people can't do silly. I see that everyday. I see it here too. Silly I understand. Emotional and mental health and no sense of humour. Yes, I can see that connection as well. I wouldn't want to go through life without seeing the absurdities. Maybe because I've seen the other side too, and this one is way more interesting. Actually, I know some people think to be spiritually inclined, you have to be all serious, but I think the opposite. IP: Logged |

Yes. You have to make room for the constipated category. * * * * * I likee this: "Budai (laughing Buddha) is said to travel giving candy to poor children, only asking a penny from Zen monks or lay practitioners he meets. One day a monk walks up to him and asks, "What is the meaning of Zen?" Budai drops his bag. "How does one realize Zen?" he continued. Budai then took up his bag and continued on his way." - wikipedia IP: Logged |

peaceangle, i've often thought about this as well. from my own personal experience, i have come across people with zero sense of humor. they can't let themselves go and be silly. they get offended or confused if you say something funny. they don't get sarcasm at all. like if i say something funny/sarcastic, for example if someone yawned at work, and i go, ooohh out partying at the clubs last night! these types would be quick to get all defensive and say no i don't go out partying. i'm tired because i couldn't go to sleep. or something like that... however, some of them eventually became my best and closest friends. i discovered probably the reason why they were so humorless was because they had a lot of hurt in their life. one was bullied by kids growing up. one was just not able to get along with other kids all that well and was just very abrasive towards others. and now, they get jokes, they laugh, they can be silly, they grew and matured and opened up. they do have a sense of humor. but i do get that some people are just more serious but from my experience, it was because they were alienated or hurt by people. however, i'm not sure how that causes one to not laugh...i can't confirm that one causes the other. Interesting, stopandstare. quote: I know some people think to be spiritually inclined, you have to be all serious, but I think the opposite.
I agree. Most people also believe that to be evolved and enlightened and to have "arrived", you have to be all positive and not even glance at the negative or the dark. What they don't know is that it doesn't help to have a segregative/separatist/isolationist frame of mind. This is a world full of polarities, not acknowledging one side of a polarity doesn't mean it doesn't exist. No light equals shadow equals scary. What I know is that we have to acknowledge both ends of the spectrum, and then make a choice as to which part we want to align with. We don't need to devalue the part that we don't resonate with, because doing so only gives it power and makes us more attracted/attractive to it, hence even more likely to experience it. To get back on topic, laughter raises our frequency and we know that joy is supposed to be the natural state of man. We humans have just been so accustomed to making life serious and complicated, so we now tend to discount anything simple and fun to be anti-life. IP: Logged |

Some people lighten up and are more free and funny around people they trust and know well - like family and close friends. There are some people that just don't feel comfortable enough to loosen up with people they hardly know - and some times a sense of humour is considered 'the lighter side' of folks. I've only met a couple of people with no sense of humor - or it's barely there. Thankfully, i can find humor in just about anything. I depend on this daily to get me through and lighten the moods. The problem is finding other people with a similar one! Or timiing...timing might sometimes be a problem with connecting humor-wise. You can't expect people to be a certain way or find everything you find to be funny, funny. People who have been through a lot of hardships and pain are often the funniest, i have noticed. Humor is sistered with sensitivity, intelligence and perceptiveness. It's also helpful if you can laugh at yourself, which i like to do quite often! There are times for seriousness though, there's nothing wrong with that. They can be useful and "spiritual" in their own right as well. And just because someone isnt laughing along with you constantly, doesnt mean they are too serious. Maybe they just don't find you funny or are going through a more somber time in their life. There's no way of escaping our spiritual beingness, light or dark periods and all. One isnt better at their spirituality because they can pointlessly clown around all the time or laugh more than another. It seems to me some people are avoiding things by doing so. It's nice that we have so many members with rich senses of humor here. IP: Logged |

well as a yank who spent years in england having my humour misunderstood, and being told i HAD none, i think maybe it is the "receiver" who is not "getting it" - at least some of the time! i guess there are plenty of people who don't find anything funny but i think usually it is a matter of delivery and expression, ie, some people are just better at getting their humour across. and some are better at picking up on it!for instance here at LL i find myself at a loss because of lack of IT skills! while some are good at written humour others use their bodies to convey it, etcetcetc. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the replies. There's a real lot of good points in here different types of humour as well as reasons for not showing or even maybe having one. I appreciate the answers. Some things in here I hadn't really thought about it. Thanks.IP: Logged |
