I'm certain Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory has Aspergers.

His characteristics being...

** needing to sit in the same seat

** not reading facial cues

** needing a strict routine

** understanding typical social conventions challenging

** completely focused on high interest areas

** logical connections to problem solving

** seeing patterns quickly (connected to above point)

Working around people with Aspergers, I find watching a sitcom with a person with Aspergers to be inclusive and educating.

I find people with Aspergers to have a unique way to perceiving the world. In fact, there are times I can't see some forms of Aspergers as a disorder. I see it as a unique way of seeing many possibilities.

Whether the writers created Sheldon as a person with Aspergers on purpose, I know not.

Whether they thought they could create a laugh at a person with Aspergers expense, I know not.

But I love Sheldon's character and appreciate his views. He highlights the challenges that a person with Aspergers may have living in a world of mainstreamers.

Nice insights Ms Koi.

I've never watched the show to see for myself but a friend of mine said that she loves that character & would love to have him clean her house, lol.

During an open-question interview, a special education teacher did ask the guy who plays Sheldon if the writers intentionally wrote him as an aspergers character. The writers told him that Sheldon is not supposed to have aspergers according to them. However, the actor said he read about aspergers and feels like Sheldon could not be more similar that he already is (so he feels Sheldon fits the aspergers traits exactly).

It's possible the writers don't want to say explicitly that Sheldon has aspergers because it might limit their writing in some way in the future, or maybe he is meant to be undiagnosed in their minds.

Now I have to watch it to see what y'all are talking 'bout.

Damn you! Television rots the mind don't you know? At least that's what my mother was referring to when calling it "The Idiot Box."
