Any advice? Would love to learn to read and write and speak a few other languages besides English. It would be nice to be able to advance my Lexigramming into other Languages and also to be able to speak/write in Russian to better communicate with one of my doctors, a Russian speaking lady whose English is hard to understand.------------------ Everyone is a teacher... Difficult to say...maybe the best way is to start communicating with native speakers? There are also forums for those who learn a particular language, I think.P.S. If you ever need any help with Russian, let me know LEXX IP: Logged |

My mums Turkish and my dads German so I speak both fluent german and Turkish and somewhat good at talking Russian also. I used to work in tourism in turkey and you have to learn Russian pretty quickly to talk to the clients. I can't read it though lolIP: Logged |

Thank everyone! Sigh... cannot find any persons willing to help in my offline world. Peri, I may take you up on that when I am more ready!------------------ Everyone is a teacher... Step one: Choose the first new language you want to learn... Then just start! My favorite approach is the audio-lingual approach where you listen and repeat ... repeatedly. That's Pimsleur. Next find comic-books in that language and read them even if you don't understand what you're reading. Just read repeatedly. Then there is a controversial subliminal approach which I found worked for me with German and Italian ... where you sort of hypnotize yourself and convince yourself that it's easy to learn this new language and that you enjoy learning it and then you visualize yourself speaking the language fluently ... You also need to listen to passages in your new language read to background music of two kinds - first dramatic music with dramatic reading to "lodge" the language in your conscious mind ... then soft soothing music in the background while someone reads to you in a soft soothing voice the same passage whilst you're in a very relaxed state ... this lodges the new language in your subconscious.------------------ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter. fatinkerbell Would that musical approach help me learn lines for a play? I have a massive part...so far so good...but I really want to have them embedded so like Pavlov's dog they come shooting out at the required cue line! And I don't have a lot of time. And could somebody explain to me how you can recite song lyrics that you haven't heard for decades, word perfect? The other day I heard a song by a "one hit wonder" who won a talent show called Opportunity Knocks back in the 70's. He had one hit record and disappeared. I saw it on Youtube the other day and could sing it perfectly. What is odd, is when I saw the title I thought "I don't recall this" Mais non! Away warbled bunnies as soon as it started, along with all the little nuances as if it was yesterday, not back in the days were every man had a moustache and sideburns and chest hair were de riguer. Why can't I remember useful stuff? Stuff I need? Stuff that's relevant. The only time it could possibly be of any use, is if one day I am in a situation were someone says "There's a bomb! And it can only be defused by singing the fourth line of a song by the Opportunity Knocks winner of 1973. Does anyone know one? Step forward bunnies "Well it just so happens! I don't want to put no hold on yoooo la la la la lala... IP: Logged |

Sheesh this topic is really a tempting one ... LEXX I forget to tell you the name of the "theory" of subliminal or unconscious learning: it's called "suggestopedia". However I think learning a language you have to follow the advice given to serious martial artists ... don't study your art in only one way or one style ... do karate AND judo AND taekwondo AND kung fu etc. etc. etc. Also everyone learns differently so you should experiment with what methods works best for you. Some people reckon grammar and translation are like totally outdated but I don't agree ... But I have like HUGE theories on all this stuff that I'm still trying to work out and if I warble on much longer I won't make any more sense and you all think Im a nut, haha : D Bunnies, you could sure try this method but something inside tells me it won't really work for memorizing lines ... it helps more for interpreting. The best way to memorize longs reams of stuff is actually to SAY it aloud over and over and over again. Your tongue has a muscle memory ... so imagine your tongue as a dancer that has to learn steps and make it say the words over and over and over again. The method of music I described is a very passive one and it enhances your listening and understanding ability ... What you need is to enhance your active memory, sort of stimulus and response, cue, here's my line kind of thing. So read aloud over and over and over and over and over and over .... (multiply to the nth) and you'll be good to go : D I'm also weird with songs I can remember from long ago ... actually I think not everyone has that ability but the way in which some people have a photographic visual memory you can also have a memory that's like a tape recorder and just a snippet of song is needed to trigger the whole playback!------------------ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter. You have made total sense to me! I do learn best by employing multiple learning methods simultaneously. IP: Logged |
