I'm just asking out of curiousity, because I think I function best at 8-9, but haven't been able (due to stress) to attain this in years. In fact, I've only been able to do this two weeks out of my life! I fell asleep between 7 and 9 and awoke between 3 and five. I felt fantastic, mentally and physically. I didn't even have that 3pm lull where I could use a nap. I'm trying to get back to it. Anyway:

How many hours do you need to feel optimal?

How many hours do you get?

Why do you think you're not getting what you need?

Also, I posted a 2009 Nova documentary called What are Dreams? in the Astral forum you may find helpful.

THANK YOU!

For me it varies. On avg I would say I need 9-10 hrs sleep. I usually get it, but it is usually disrupted, so maybe I don't usually get it.

I have trouble falling asleep (insomnia). I am a light sleeper, so any noise will wake me. My phone also doesn't go off (unless I am really serious about getting sleep)... That's why I usually don't get it all on some mornings.

So, I get my sleep in snippets usually, but if I get one uninterrupted sleep - I feel like I've eaten sunshine I'm so energized and alert.

I seem to need 9 to 11 hours.
However I rarely sleep longer than 1/2 hour max straight through.
I have a condition wherein I go into REM very fast.
So physically my body requires rest, but my mind takes me into REM at a drop of a hat at any time. Like I can go to sleep standing up, and dream a long dream, but will be out for only a moment to a person watching me.....and unless I start snoring, no one realizes I am dreaming, because my eyes are open...I simply freeze in place...then wham!
Back to normal!

i usually sleep about 6 hours, but frequently either my cat or my internal clock wake me after 4. then i either go back to sleep or get up and do something for awhile.

however i do like to have ONE long night a week ideally. like 10-12 hours!

I can't function below 8 hours of good sleep. I prefer 10 though.

Wow, I so far I see an average of 8-10 hours sleep for you folks. I thought I was excessive at 8-9, but I guess it is normal.

Lexx, you should watch the Nova doc. I think they discuss your condition.

I wish I could sleep even two hours straight!

Always only sleep between 5 to 6 hours.
Never feel tired.
When I flew to New Zealand sat in a combination of planes and airports for 26 hours, bolt upright!
And then didn't bother going to bed till the next night.
Have never cat napped in my life but it's a skill I wish I possessed.
Am always on alert....even asleep!

I love to get a nice, deep sleep, but it's rare.

Figures Bunnies... what with a diet of fresh green grass and daisies

On a serious note, do you have a healthy diet?
I ask because i have noticed that excessive wheat eaters or candida sufferers need more than 7 hours sleep a night... at optimal level the body is healthier with LESS sleep

I found this and i agree with it.

Healthy Habit #7-2 Early to bed,
early to rise.
Going to bed around 10pm is most natural for our biology.

Sleep researchers say that "one hour before 2am is worth two hours after 2am".

This means that sleeping from 10pm to 2am would be equivalent to 8 hours of sleep!

Hi Starr

Yes, it's a yogic principle! on a yoga website. http://www.yogalifestylecoach.com/restfulsleep.html

It's a known fact that quality not quantity of sleep is important and 6-7 hrs a night is the most one should be getting. There is such a thing as oversleeping...

I really don't do mornings lol.

I try to get my 10 yr old in bed by 9...try.

Then we're both up by 7:30
so.. that's 10 hours there if you give time for tucking him in bed and saying all our nighty nights lol.

LOL.. I was worse when I was a teenager.
I would love to be in bed by 8 - 8:30 then up by 6. I just loved how energized I felt the next day.

I usually sleep for 3-4 hrs but for the past 4-5 days I was barely getting 3 hrs. So, I forced myself to sleep from 9pm-5:30am last night to cover for all the REM deficiency I had. For me, REM is the only reason I go to sleep.

Thanks, Lara. I'll check it out this weekened.

katatonic: I know, right? My Grampy would be up very early to go in the basement and start the furnace. It is a warm memory. No pun intended.

I personally find getting up before the sun helps with self-esteem. And the pink/purple sky is breath taking.
