So, my mother is pretty much my best friend, and I have been so worried about her health for the past few years, mostly because of her weight gain. She does not have high blood pressure or cholesterol, but I don't see how, as she has eaten so poorly and used to drink a bit too much for a long time. She has been in a relationship for over 4 years, (very happy and with a sweet Gemini) and basically let herself get comfortable and eaten lots of fattening and processed foods. I know that she does not care about her outer appearance, and it has not affected her work, quite to the contrary, she has become a huge success in real estate and loan origination. She has arthritis in her ankles, which makes it very painful for her to exercise, and we have a history of bad knees in our family. She has recently started the South Beach Diet, and is for once really excited about the diet she is trying.I guess the reason I am posting this is to see if anyone knows much about this diet, it's effectiveness and long term effects. I know a lot of 'fad' diets out there turn out to be extremely unhealthy, what with heart disease and brain function depletion being some of the worse results. I want very much to help her out with this, she seems so determined, and I would like to be here for her and be supportive... I don't want this to be just another failed attempt to get healthy. Thanks in advance! Ghani IP: Logged |

Hi Ghani,I've never perused the South Beach book, only glanced through it. I'm not a fan of the low carb lifestyle a la Atkins, but the South Beach seems to be more balanced. I'm a fan of fruits and veggies and whole grains. I know people who have lost a lot of weight on the South Beach program, and they rave about it. Their energy surges and they find it easy to live with, because when past the initial stage they don't have to give up bagels and grains forever. I think probably the most significant change when adapting to a program like this is the elimination of junk food! And that's a huge change for the better. Not only is junk food empty of any nutritional value, it's usually filled with crap that is detrimental to our health. It's been years since I read it but I seem to recall that the Suzanne Somers books were also about living a low carb lifestyle, while still incorporating whole grains and fruits into your eating program. Good Luck to your mom. She's blessed to have such a loving daughter. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Trillian!Somebody said it was much like the diet of a diabetic, as it tries to regulate your blood sugar and helps your body break foods down more effectively. I think the lack of processed foods (and junk food) is most certainly one of the reasons it works. I am over the moon about her surge in energy and overall demeanor. She just seems much happier, less bloated and more upbeat now that she is eating such healthy food! Amazing what food does to (for) the body! Ghani IP: Logged |

From what I hear, the South Beach diet pretty much focuses on cutting out simple carbs rather than the complex carbs which are actually healthy where as the atkins diet cuts out ALL carbs which I think is a bunch of crock! So I think she will be alright with that diet IP: Logged | |
