Topic: Essential oils causing spots?!

So, I made up a perfume, after originally using rose otto straight on my neck and wrists and having no problems (i have v sensitive easily irritated skin, particulary neck and chest area, cant wear perfume there) and I put rose absoloute, rose otto, ylang ylang and jasmine into a small vial in sweet almond oil, and sprayed it on my neck. It seemed fine at first, then after about a week I wore my hair up and looked in the mirror and realised I had a speckling of pink spots (not angry looking) kind of like a rash, and on both sides of my neck, right under the corner jawbone, about an inch under my ear. Ive stopped using it for about a week now but they are still there, although faded a little. Anyone know if the oils could have caused this? it might have been a bit to rich and strong a dilution.. but only causing a reaction on my neck? maybe because thats where its v sensitive skin and lymph glands ect. Anyways, would love any advice!

Yes be careful, I have sensitive skin too, almost anything creates red spots.
I dilute everything or I put oils on my clothes, not a very good idea really, but I put the oils on places you can't see so you don't see a stain.

Good idea. I recently experienced a rash after showering. I realized that it may have been the essential oils in my shampoo that was irritating my skin as I rinsed it off. Now I make sure it doesn't run down my skin.

Yeah.. I was gonna say.. put it in your hair, a few drops, run over it, or under it... lasts forever, everytime you move, it wafts out...
Usually essential oil forms of oil ar enot oily, but anyone can be sensitive to anything, and it can even change and develop after years of use....
It could be the carrier oil.. sweet almond...
Try grapeseed, or leave the oil out.IP: Logged |

Ah...yes! I didnt even think of it being the carrier oil!!  Thankyou Pixie, Ill have to test it out somehow... otherwise jojoba has always been fine on me. 
(I love putting in my hair too, especially rose otto and other pretty light smells!)  Ooh, and I asked my Mum; shes allergic to oils if not careful, she literally started sneezing and coughing just after I asked her to smell some various oils!! I think we're both very sensitive, the effects of the oils are more powerful.
I guess I'll just do higher dilutions and maybe only use jojoba instead. Thanks so much for the advice and help guys!! IP: Logged |
