I have as a second, as you probably know by now ahah!
I learned it through video games and hammering myself to listen to english voiced series and such.
It came to a point where I can't even read in french or listen french adaptations of movies. It's just ... not natural...
Right now I'd say I spend my days mostly in english, reading, talking, listening.

That is so cool, RL. I am trying to get fluent in Spanish. It is one of my dreams. Languages are magical to me. Your English is super impressive!

RL

How did you listen? English with French subtitles or French with English ones? Did you work with music at all. If so, how? Thanks

I started with French movies and English subtitles, but then realized that the learning wasn't really effective since I tended to simply ignore the subtitles.

I then switched to English with french subtitles, to later put English subtitles since my understanding was better, but the actors sometimes talked too fast for me to poperly understand the words.

Now I can listen to British, Texan or even Aussie accent without any problems.

Talk Show really helped me with accent and popular slang since these shows aren't (usually loll) scripted

How long did it take for you to be this fluent? So, you are from canada? Do many of the French speakers know English?

My brain sort of unclogged in my third year of High School. Since first year, I was in a special type of class called "English Centering" or anything along those lines. "Concentration Anglais" in French
The amount of French class and English class we had were reversed compared to the others students (we had 8 hours of English and 4 hours of french instead of having it the other way)
I've always been struggling, but in third year it's like everything suddenly made sense. Upon that point, it simply became a matter of absorbing the rules and grammar.
I'd say that in fifth year of high school I was fluent, not as good as today, but I could held my own in a conversation and I had no problem in watching TV shows without subtitles.
From then on, I only became better. Especially with the vocabulary and writing part.

I also have lots of friends from U.S.A and U.K (one or two from Australia too) thanks to video games. We are still talking a lot, either on voice chat or on Facebook.
I'd say that 70% of my days are spent in English (on average), I like to believe that I'm almost as immersed as if I was living in the U.S.A ahah.

And no, I wouldn't say that many of the French speakers know English.
They may know a word or two, or can, with great difficulties, make themselves understood by native speakers, however few people are truly fluent.
Either by lack of motivation, interest, opportunities or simply because they see the fact of being bilingual as a "failure to keep the French untainted (not like it isn't already what with all the english slangs that we ended up absorbing anyway)" Like we were giving in to the English and we'd all end up only speaking that language or some other rubbish like that.

Yes, I was thinking that "keeping French pure" may be the reason that there were not many English speakers.

Is the French in Canada very different from the French in France/

Oh yes, they are really really different.
It's like comparing Australian English to the British one.
The accent makes it almost sounds like two different languages, and the slang is COMPLETELY different.
Like Totally.
Canadian French will often swears in english, or using bible words, whereas French will use insults and such as a swear (I'm cutting it short, but still)
culture made both of our language vastly different.

This is a topic I really like to help people with! Half of my family is from Guatemala, the rest are from the USA. I however, didn't grow up speaking Spanish, I only grew up hearing it from my aunt's and grandparents. My dad didn't speak Spanish, which is a completely different story lol. But I myself had to learn to fill in the gaps. I could understand a lot because of my family, but I couldn't reproduce it. But after years of studying hard, I can definitely speak and understand Spanish at a high level.

My best advice, study using a variety of media. For example, read a book in Spanish that you have already read in English so that you are somewhat familiar with what is going on. Write down words you don't know and define them later. Sing along to songs in Spanish! I used to sing along to Disney tunes in Spanish as a kid and still as an adult (haha). This can really help your mouth muscles adjust to the different rhythm that Spanish has from English. And yes definitely watch movies. I think the best way is the watch the movie with the subtitles. However, make sure the subtitles are in Spanish so if you can't understand the sounds you can read them. Most importantly, find a friend to speak with!! Real conversational practical is absolutely necessary to give the language purpose. And most importantly do not be afraid to make mistakes, the most important thing is that you continue to use the language.

Lastly, Duolingo is an amazing ap for cellphones for learning languages. It uses a big variety of methods for the learner to use, in order for them to tackle all the different aspects of language learning (such as reading comprehension, pronunciation, listening comprehension, learning vocabulary, etc.)

I hope this helps !

English is my second language. I had classes since I was 4yrs old. So, I absorbed it naturally.
But french was more difficult for me, since I was 12 when I started. I can have a conversation in french but my writting is a total disgrace.

English is my second language too! I'm Finnish, and all Finnish kids are taught English in school, usually starting from grade 3 (when the kids are aged 9) - some may start a bit later, they may start another language like Swedish or German in 3rd grade.

I've always had a knack for languages - at one point my English teacher suspected that my parents speak English to me at home (because they've traveled a lot) but that wasn't the case. It has always been easy for me to pick languages up. I remember that when I was a kid, I was a huge fan of the Backstreet Boys (haha!) and wanted to write them fan mail, so that motivated me to learn. And I wanted to understand what they were singing about!

And when I started using the Internet, most of the interesting websites were in English, so I've always had a good reason to work on my skills. A lot of Finnish people speak rather good English, though, but I've been complimented in several instances about my language learning abilities. In high school, I got a honorable mention when I started taking Russian classes mid-semester (without even knowing the Cyrillic alphabet) but caught up with everyone in a few weeks or so.

For the past few years, I've been learning Japanese as a fun hobby, without textbooks, just listening to music, watching TV shows and chatting in Japanese. My level is still very basic, but I'm slowly moving forward. Two years ago I was so frustrated that I didn't believe I'd ever get to a point where I'd be able to have even a basic conversation.

If anyone's interested, I've got Mercury & Venus in Gemini in the 12th and my AC is in late Gemini (29 degrees, almost in Cancer) and conjunct my Chiron and Sun in Cancer. Nothing special that would specifically say "YES! This person is very gifted", though ;p I think someone once even suggested that I may have difficulties in that arena, since both my Mercury & Venus are retrograde, but the only problems I've had were in self-expression as a teen. No one who met me today would guess that I've had such difficulties Make the best with what you're given!
