He has
Chiron Cancer, 7 degree in the 9th opposite Neptune Capricorn, 7 degree in the 3rd.

Can anyone help me with the significance of this aspect?

Basically it's quite complicated at the moment. We have been good friends for 5 years, on and off, some times we havn't spoke to/seen each other for months.
But our friendship in the past, before we have started to see each other again, was based around talking about and getting through person pain. Mostly his pain and suffering. And especially through social networking.

Our meeting again but in a different nature could explain my chiron loosely conjunct his SN, with an 8 degree orb.

His- Chiron-Cancer Neptune-Cap. Exact opposition!

Things that come to mind for him with chiron opp neptune: - Self inflicted abuse, escapism due to (wound) in youth. Loss of innocence. Incredible healing ability for others, especially in ones generation. Mass awareness of darker realities, subdued with in them. Great empathy for others. Doomed to oneself.

Does this make sense with that aspect?

Also with my mercury conjunct their chiron and opposite Neptune. I guess this explains our mental connection, working through his pain and being involved with in it. But also he is very unconfident in his self & his image. And he need's a lot of reassurance, maybe he thinks i'm kidding myself, being involved with him, (as a friend & maybe more, platonic) his mentality of neptune, maybe he thinks I see him differently than who he is and that's why he is anxious? but with his chiron there, how would that play out? Do I ease his anxiety/worry through communicating with him?
