Do you have a preference? If so, why? Do you like them both or are they just so vastly different?

I look at both. I actually feel like I can do best to see the synastry first to see how two people interact, then I use the composite compared to the natal to see how it affects them. In my experience though I definitely see both readings to be accurate. It's the house influence that changes things from positive to not so positive, I think. So sometimes when I first see a composite or synastry it appears good, but when you dig deeper you see the issues.

What I need to practice and improve on is actually interpreting the individual natal charts first! So I realize I'm going about it all wrong, because I start kind of backwards.

I feel like I do alright to see the basic energy, but what I would love to learn is the influence from the house positions and then of course looking at the whole pattern of aspects as opposed to just how two planets alone are interacting.

But to answer your question, I like both!

They are both different. If you want to understand a relationship between two people, you look at the natal, synastry and composite. Learning about relationships in astrology is very difficult, you always gotta look at natal and how each planets affects the person; for example a plutonian themed synastry may be different for a person who is not plutonian versus a highly plutonian person. Then look at the composite when a couple has been together a while. If you are just jumping straight to composite without looking at synastry and natal, then you are missing out on a lot!

Composites aren't just for people who've been together for a while. Me and someone else had pretty good synastry together, but despite having strong sexual aspects like venus sextile mars, mars conj asc, mars/jupiter- all tight in orb or exact. And despite having positive saturn influences between us, we couldn't seem to get close enough to each other to have a conversation let alone sex. Then I saw the composite chart between us and that explained everything. Jewel Mayberry on youtube says certain aspects in the composite like Saturn square Sun for example show up Immediately between two people and you don't have to wait for the couple to even be together for it to show up.

So I think it's more like, the composite is the ultimate result of the relationship and the synastry is more like a diagnostic tool of telling you specifically where the problems lie. Both are important.

I tend to agree with this characterization. I like to sat synastry shows how you will hit off and composite will how you get it on(or not)

I thought Synastry would be the first contact between two people then the composite would be how the relationship works long term.

I have a terrible Synastry with someone, but an awesome Composite. Things never took off because our synastry was so against us.
