Ok, in general, how do you tell the difference between:

1. Wind damage
2. Sun damage vs not enough sun
3. Whether you're overwatering
4. Diff btwn sun damage and underwatering

I've discovered I LOVE gardening (and not to bad at it if I do say so myself ), however I find it difficult to tell w/ some plants the difference between wind dmg vs sun dmg vs underwatering etc, that kind of thing.

Thanks!

i'll try to answere some of your queries:-

wind damage: it will disfigure the plant, its branches will be broken and if kept quite long in the same place/position branched will sprout only on one side of the stem which is the opposite side where winds directly hit the plant..i wonder if you have seen some trees at niagra fall they all are lopsided with all the branches only on one side on the tree away from the wind...(unrepairable damage unless you move the plant)..
Sun damage: usually you will see scorch areas on the leaves, the leaves just get burn and become brown and brittle usually sun burn results in brown patches and tip of the leaf gets most affected..(repairable)
not enough sun:- this normally poses problem for flowering plants which need a certain photoperiod and if devoid of enough sunlight don't bloom nicely... for green leafy plants they normally drop there leaves and and vigrous growth is absent if enough sunlight is not poresent..
overwatering:- well it is very easy to diagnose...the leaves turn yellow and there is wilting at the stem.the whole plant turns pale....overwatering is really really bad for plants....soil shud be porous enough to avoid water logging.
difference between sun damage and underwatering:- well ..in case of sun damage you will find brown patches, tip necrosis etc which is not in the case of underwatering.when plants don't get water they just droop down and the the leaves and apical part looses the turgidity..when you water them they again gain the turgidity and stand staright....smile at you...
happy gardening :-)
