In equal house system MC and 10th house cusp are not necessarily the same. I presume 10th house is still supposed to be interpretated as the house for career social status. But how should one interpretate MC?
Thanks everyone.

Hi Stella,

I'll try to give the explanation as the way I understand it. I don't use the Equal House system, but I would interpret the MC for exactly what it stands for. If the MC falls in a house other than the 10th, it will take on some of the characteristics of that house, still having to do with career, goals, etc.

The MC stands for medium coeli, meaning "the middle of the skies",it is the point at the moment of birth where the Ecliptic crosses the meridian of the place of birth.

Most of the time, the midheaven and the MC are used interchangeably, but the difference is technical due to caluclations in using the different house systems.

It follows, therefore, that the Midheaven position will be the same for anyone born along the same line of longitude at the same time on the same day. In the Placidus house system, the Midheaven forms the cusp of the 10th house; in the equal house system it can be found in the 9th, 10th or 11th house.

Well, I hope I didn't confuse more than I already am,

Donna

The MC, being the highest point at birth, symbolises the aims and ambitions one works towards, and, by extension, one's career potential and public image. But these areas are also 10th house matters, devised, because of that house's association with Saturn, to show precisely these areas of life. It is therefore conceptually necessary (so goes the argument) that the MC be the cusp of the 10th house. For this reason, the Equal House system has a limited following outside the UK, although it is still the commonest House system within the UK.

The biggest criticism of the Equal House system concerns the position of the MC, which, using this system is more often than not, not the cusp of the tenth house (or any house) but rather is found within the 9th, 10th or 11th house.

Thanks, Donna. (I'm not going to ask you to explain why my MC is in the 8th house..)
I started to use equal house system as I'm born very close to the Polar circle and for friends born even further north you can't get a proper chart with Placidus. And then Greg gave me a great explanation about the different systems at Astrology Course which convinced me that equal hoyse is just as good as anything else. But what I find very interesting now that I look at the same person's chart with both Placidus and equal house system is that they seem to fullfill eachother, the two charts together give a more complete and precise picture, if you know what I mean..
For instance, in Placidus my 10th house cusp is in Aries, and I take that an indication that I'm individual and like to work alone, further confirmed of the ruler, Mars, in 12th house. Aries cusp also indicates that I start projects easily and don't always finish with the same enthusiasm..In equal house the cusp of my 10th house is in Taurus, it shows endurance and stubborness, the ruler Venus is in my 3rd house. I'm a writer. The MC is in my 8th house, I currently work on a novel where death and dealing with death is the theme. (And ok, some sex in between..)
..
I did a couple of charts for people I know well with both house systems, it's really funny. You should try!

Hi Stella,

Oops, I forgot about you being born near the Polar circle, that does make a difference when using the different House systems. I just wasn't thinking. So, yes, the Equal House system is actually the best choice to use for births at those lattitudes.

I actually play around with all the House systems, I just prefer Koch, don't know why, but it just seems to resonate with me.

The debate for which House system is a long and ongoing debate among astrologers. Each one has it's value and it just becomes a matter of preference, because I truly think they all give insight. It just depends on which insight one is looking for.
