"COMBUST: A planet is combust if it lies in the same sign as the Sun beyond the Sun's body (17') but within the moiety or half-orb (8.5 degrees ) of the Sun. Being combust burns up and thus weakens a planet. Traditionally the Moon is especially debilitated when combust." http://members.aol.com/tonylouis/home/glossa-c.htm IP: Logged |

Aj BTW the way Archer, if it's out the 8 1/2 degree and within 17 degrees of the Sun it's called "under beams" or "under the Sun's beams" and can waeken a planet too, but less so. Like with any other rule in astrology, this one can bend a little. But the Sun tending to weaken the moon and Venus is very common in such cases, since these are the most receptive planets. Mercury too can be affected unless fortified by sign, house or other aspect (like in my chart - technically my merc is combust my Sun, but it is in Gemini and conjunct to MC, so those easily compensate for the debility of the Sun's beams). Mars combust or under the beams tends to cause inner conflict, and the outer planets tend to be less afflicted. Here's an interesting chart from astrologycom.com (same peeps that have the glossary I posted for you yesterday), that "scores" diginifying (strengthing) and debilating (weakening) factors (must of the terms they use are listed in the glossary): http://www.astrologycom.com/values.html IP: Logged |

Hmmm -- I have these placements:Sun Pisces 19.48 Merc Pisces 19.37 Jup Pisces 20.12 NN Pisces 19.00 In no way are these areas weakened or debilitated. There is also a term used which indicates enhancement -- casimi or cazimi, i believe. Traditional cookie-cutter answers do not always fit.

Yeah, AJ it does seem to get pretty involved. But that's why I prefer to call astrology an intuitive science. You need to get to "feel" how planets, signs and aspects work together, to intuit how this and that affects each other. It takes practice, not just knowledge. It's no wonder that traditions of mysticism have been more open to astrology than the modern "hard" sciences that strive to base everything on empirical evidence and dsimiss intuition as irrational (despite many great scientific advances being rooted in a particluar scientist's intuition - ironic, yes?). Rules and terms like these are really just guidelines and starting places. It also takes a lot of openness to be realizing when we've been wrong or completely missed the mark, too, in order to learn and get better at it. I find some people just what astrology to be clear cut and simple. If only. Nothing involving human nature ever is. LOL. IP: Logged |

Well I can tell you've put a lot of study into this. It's amazing how knowledgeable you are when looking at the big picture, and historically as well. I just witnessed an intellectual step up when it comes to... or I don't know what to call it really, but when I wonder how students make it through school these days, like in colleges & universities especially, because there's so much more information they need to process, and everyone's just doing memorization - BUT that's been going on a LONG LONG time, so brother! a piece of paper don't mean a dammn thang. But even there, if you're not going to strive and you're going to be a total airhead, that's just as bad. *jostle* *jostle*IP: Logged |

Gentle Bump: According to this info/others My Natal Venus @ 8deg/9th is combust my Sun 5deg/9th in Taurus. Venus is my chart ruler, in a Stellium [which ADDS power] all in a fixed sign and exalted. With the combustion... how do all of the pluses and minuses play out? Any takers on this quandary? And to top it all off I have 5 T-squares 2 of which involve the afore mentioned Venus and Sun in Taurus? Any one else have something similar? IP: Logged | |
