I was studying the charts of my two children, and noticed that they both have the moon in the tenth. Looking through my astrology books and the net, that position appears to be a good one.
However, my Jackie has the Sun in the eighth. I looked it up, and read that may indicate a violent and early death. I also read that its an indication of a life of struggle, especially around middleage
My son's 7th house son had positive statements. So now, I'm freaking out about my little girl having a tragic life. I believe in free will, but that is still a scary thought.

My question is if the natal chart is really used to predict lifespan??? If so, is it possible that certain aspects mean not physical death but death via spiritual transformation etc??????

Alot of Astrology out there is very old school... so many comments, so many unbelievable comments, all designed to foster a sense of the mystical... But really... I'd say the position of the Sun predicting an early death is about as reliable as your palm lines predicting the same....
The eighth house is Scorpio's house.. what does it rule? Inheritances~ other people's money, esoteric/psychic matters, death and rebirth... the deepness behind the facade. Also sex.. physical sex. Pluto is transformative and psychological.
Throw out that rendition of your child's Sun's position.. it isn't anything real. It is up to interpretation.
I have a fourth house Sun myself.. my early childhood wasn't traumatic, so many people really want it to be when doing 'old-fashioned' type readings/predictions.. it simply means the validity of this position shows other things related to the planets/signs and aspects.
Take heart and don't worry.

Yeah - or try a different House System, like Equal or whatever. And just teach your child to not be their worst enemy, because Scorpio influences can cause you to turn on yourself, or for example, treating other's in a hurtful way which can bring danger to oneself. Maybe she'd like a self-defensive course in Karate. Scorpio's focus and mental discipline works well here.

Deira, fear not! I have an 8th house sun, and I've read alot of those fatalistic interpretations of planets in this house. You should see what they say about 8th house Mars, which I have as well. EEK. lol... You can't take them too literally, those old-school interpretations. You have to remember the social climate from which they originated. It WAS fatalistic, and people had dreary, hard, burdon-filled lives, over which they felt they had very little control.
Having an 8th house sun can be a very good thing, because it doesn't let you be niave about the motivations of other people. It always seeks to see what's bubbling under the surface, knowing that THIS is where the real motives lie. It also bring benefits through the resources of others, legacies, inheretances, and the ability to bond with others on a very profound level.

It can really be viewed as a powerful placement, not at all something to dread.

Wow Diera,
I know exactly what you're talking about as I read the same description you did awhile ago and had the same concerns for my 13 yr old son. Rather depressing. And then it just dawned on me that with the Equal system I too have sun in 8th.........bumped up from 7th. My son has his sun in 8th using both systems. So "Thank you" to Pix, AJ and Lioneye68 for your words of encouragement.

AJ~

treating other's in a hurtful way which can bring danger to oneself.

how very true, I keep telling my son (Taurus/Virgo) that if he doesn't start treating his 11 yr old sister (Aries/Aries) better she is gonna really hurt him one day, he doesn't fully understand what she is made of. LOL

Thank you so much guys, for taking time to give me some very insightful answers. I love this site, you are all so wise and thoughtful.

My Jackie does have a strong personality, a karate class would be really good for her. In addition to her 8th house sun, she has Scorpio rising. Her love of speaking stays true to her Gemini sun, but she does have a lot of Scorpio in her.

Hi Deira-No worries!!

I am Gemini Sun in the 8th with Scorpio Rising....Your talkative daughter will have great instincts for sure...and just the other day I was told by one of my longest and best friends(over 25yrs+) that she didn't know anyone who had more deep intimacy with people than me!!

One of my careers was in the financial industry and I was a great success at handling others money....my lifeline is very long (palmistry) and sex is always intense...definitely not superficial for me (not fulfilling if it isn't connecting on many levels-deeply!!). I have been told by many that I have a rather magnetic-powerful presense and personality and it can be overwhelming (in a postive way)to people who are timid or shy.
Not to worry-all good things!! Life for us is black or white yet with some flexibility thrown in at times.

Just wanted to ease your mind...hope this helped some!!

Hi Deira,
my boyfriend has sun, moon, mars, venus and mercury in the 8th (taurus) and I have the moon and mercury (also taurus) and I was also a bit perturbed by all of this "old-style" interpretation. I have a text book from the 1950's which has been very useful but also uses a lot of this "mystique". However I now take all the 8th house actvity to mean that he is just acutely sensitive to emotional stuff, either his own or other people's emotions. As Pixelpixie was saying,

The eighth house is Scorpio's house.. what does it rule? Inheritances~ other people's money, esoteric/psychic matters, death and rebirth... the deepness behind the facade. Also sex.. physical sex. Pluto is transformative and psychological.

so I think that people with a strong 8th house do have a deepness that is hidden behind other aspects of their chart. I reckon it makes for exciting relationships anyway. And the death and rebirth part has never really occurred to me a lot, I've read in a lot of places (Howard Sasportas I think) that it is more about the death and rebirth of ideas and stages in life that actual physical death. Psychological death I think it was termed. Now this I can relate to and is probably my 8th house moon at work.
I don't know anybody else with 8th house placements apart from us two and we do seem to have a bond that neither of us have with others, not just romantically.

Lioneye68 - what do they say about 8th house mars?? Is it bad?

love and light
aXX

"Jupiter:

Jupiter in the 8th often indicates a larger than usual inheritance or an uncontested will. Generally this is also an indication of marrying "up" to a partner with many resources. With Jupiter in sect, banks will generally be more willing to lend, and your credit will generally be good.

In ancient times, this was because lenders would be willing to take it on faith. A dirunal Jupiter enforces faith, because you cannot see beyond the blue sky in the daytime. But if Jupiter is in debility, afflicted, or out of sect, it can indicate the scattering of resources upon anothers death and/or the need to hire lawyers to straighten out an estate at some point due to a contest.

In general, little will be taken at face value and there will be a need to prove your rights. You should take personal control of your finances as your mate will generally be more wasteful.

Mars:

Mars in the 8th is often one of the textbook examples of death under violent circumstances, but other indicators should be looked into before leaping to this conclusion (even then it can be averted), but JFK and Hitler are 2 examples of this placement. On a more mundane level, it may show profit by salvage, making good use of what others no longer want.

There is often an ability to dig into secret or hidden matters, cutting waste getting straight to the heart of financial issues, if Mars is in sect and without debility. If debilitated and/or out of sect, there is waste by a mate or business partner, or worse, the danger of theft, usury, or overdrawn accounts from time to time, with penalties and interest charges, or bereavement. Credit under these circumstances is likely to be hard to come by."

Mars in 8th is often associated with a sexually predatorial nature, as well as violent property crimes against others(mars = aggression, 8th house = other people's money)

Also, associated with death by accident, or a voilent crime of some sort, often assocated with sex. Crimes of passion.

Pretty frightening stuff. Spooked me when I read it.

Oh yeah...another interpretation I read about Mars in the 8th was 'death by fire'.

According to these interps, you're either a violent criminal or a victim of violent criminals if you have Mars in the 8th. So far, I have been neithor.

Not exactly comforting stuff, though, huh?

But, there are some very positive things about this placement as well, and most interpretions deal more with the positive.

I think the interpretation I read that scared me the most was Saturn in the 5th, supposedly can mean the death of a child. I only have one child! Sometimes Astrology is spooky, but you can't consider any one aspect soley on it's own. The entire chart has to be looked at as a whole.

I have mars at the end of my 7th, but most astro programs will interpet it in the 8th.
When I read some of the descripts for 8th house mars, I cringe, it's spookey for sure.
I get even more unglued because my mars is in scorp to boot.
8th house is others peoples money, lol, that's what I tell myself.

Thanks for the 8th house info!!

Interesting about the contrasts with Jup and Mars in eighth house....maybe money inherited (Jup) yet may have partner who is wasteful (sounds like my Ex!!). I took over the finances and our credit was perfect...now we are no longer married and he ruined all of his credit and spent all of his money too!! Wow.

BTW...I have Saturn in Pisces located in the 5th as well. Yep, no kids...to my chagrin...I have many other friends who have Sat in 5th who have 2 or 3 children...

As far as the Mars/8th H violence issue...creeps me out a bit...not one for criminal activities...or criminals for that matter...not into sexually violent matters...too scary...maybe the Mars in Gemini keeps it a bit lighter?? Did anyone find a more positive reading on Mars?? (OK-I do not know how to paste a smiley face-sorry!) There has to be more light here!!

Virgotaurustaurus,
If it's any consolation I have neptune in the 8th in scorp. Nep conjuncts my mars and merc in scorp.
I don't know what you read but I imagine I wouldn't have liked it either.

Well, and that's a perfect example of how an aspect to a particular Planet can dramatically, or subtley, change it's energy. No Planet is an island onto itself ... sounds like a famous quote ...

I have Sun in the Eighth, allied to my Mercury. Sun in the Eighth does tend to make people unusually intense, but I think that once this is recognized and can be channelled into some positive outlet, it can become a tremendous force for good. When 8th House natives do something, they usually do it thoroughly. For example, Henry VIII, who stopped at nothing to marry his wives of choice - whatever it took. The emotional angle on things will also tend to be felt more deeply than with other House placements.
