What are houses and what do they each represent?
How important are they?

Signs affect HOW a planet operates. HOUSES show WHERE planets are working, in WHAT AREA of your life they are having an effect. Houses have no special names to memorize. They are simply numbered one through twelve, and each house has similarities to its corresponding sign. For instance, sign number five, Leo, is the SIGN of romance and creativity in general. In your horoscope, HOUSE number five shows in particular what your romantic life is like. Astrologers probably get asked more about this house than any other.

First House: This begins with the Ascending Sign (also called the Rising Sign) at the left side of the horoscope wheel. This house shows your outward and superficial traits. It is what people see when they first meet you, as opposed to the Sun-Sign which shows your inner traits. This house corresponds to the 1st sign, Aries, which is the sign of new beginnings.

Second House: Money and possessions. But it goes beyond these. The second house also shows the VALUE you place on things, including yourself, so it includes your sense of self-worth. This house corresponds to the 2nd sign, Taurus, which is the sign of material goods.

Third House: Communications, and one’s style of communicating, the "lower mind" (the ability to perceive facts and communicate them), short journeys, brothers and sisters, neighbors, and anything within arms reach. This house corresponds to the 3rd sign, Gemini, the sign of communications.

Fourth House: Your home, the domestic environment in general, your early years, and the parent of lesser influence, usually the father. I’m frequently asked whether the early environment has more influence than the horoscope. My answer has always been that the formative years are shown by the 4th house. This house also shows what we become during the last third of our life. The older we get, the more we become like the sign and the planets in our 4th house. This house corresponds to the 4th sign, Cancer, sign of the home. It is also the only house where the correspondence breaks down a bit. Cancer is the sign of motherhood, but the 4th house usually indicates the father.

Fifth House: Romance and children (there is a connection), creativity, gambling and speculation, hobbies, sports, fun and games. This house corresponds to the 5th sign, Leo, sign of romance, creativity, and children.

Sixth House: Work and service, both given and received. This is not career (ruled by the 10th house) but rather your style and quality of work. It also shows health matters. This house corresponds to the 6th sign, Virgo, sign of work, service, and health.

Seventh House: Marriage and partnership. Any time you approach anyone else as an equal, you are using your 7th house, so it rules more than marriage and business partners. It rules open enemies as well. It may seem contradictory for marriage and open enemies to be shown by the same area of the horoscope, but if that’s what you think, you probably have never been married. This house corresponds to the 7th sign, Libra (not that terrible movie with Demi Moore), sign of partnership.

Eighth House: Sex, death, rebirth (in the sense of regeneration). Since this is opposite the 2nd house (which rules YOUR money, possessions, and values) the 8th house rules other people’s money, possessions, and values, your ability to utilize the possessions of others for your own ends. By extension, it rules insurance and tax matters, as well as the influence that the values of others have on you (social values). It can also indicate what influence, if any, you can have on the values of those around you, including the society you live in. As far as sex goes, the 5th house may rule romance, but the 8th house gets down to the sex act itself, your style of sex, your tastes, what turns you on. This includes any fetish you may have. Now you see why astrology readings are confidential. By the way, if you like to play music during sex and you happen to get involved with someone who has the planet Mars in the 8th house AND the sign of their Mars is Gemini, well the music you should play is the Minute Waltz! This house corresponds to the 8th sign, Scorpio, sign of sex, death, regeneration, and other people’s money.

Ninth House: Religion, philosophy, higher education, "higher mind" (the ability to grasp general principles as opposed to the "lower mind" ability to perceive and communicate individual facts). In general, it shows the principles (or lack of principles) that we were raised with. Since the 9th house is opposite the 3rd, it shows long journeys (requiring an overnight stay) as opposed to short ones. This house corresponds to the 9th sign, Sagittarius, sign of higher mind, religion, philosophy, and long journeys.

Tenth House: Career (as opposed to day-to-day work), public image (as opposed to your private image), the goals of your life. The 10th house begins with the Mid-Heaven, the highest point in the horoscope. Additionally, the 10th house rules the parent of "greater influence", usually the mother. This house corresponds to the 10th sign, Capricorn, sign of ambition and organizing skills.

Eleventh House: Traditionally assigned to Friends, Hopes, and Wishes. It goes beyond that, however. The 11th house indicates how we deal with groups of people. This house corresponds with the 11th sign, Aquarius, sign of friendship.

Twelfth House: Self-undoing, psychological problems, restrictions and places of restriction, hidden enemies (as opposed to the open enemies shown by the 7th house). I know, it doesn’t sound like a nice house, but strong placements here usually increase one’s intuition. This house corresponds with the 12th sign, Pisces, sign of intuition, dreams, and compassion. http://www.bobmarksastrologer.com/TheHouses.htm
And for more information; http://www.bobmarksastrologer.com/TOClessons.htm

Aries - First House- to be
Individuality, being your own boss, running the show, team leader, 'I'm in charge'. The need to be seen changing the world (a few politicians have the Sun in this sign). How you look, physical appearance, interface with the world out there, the first cry of the newborn baby "Here I am!".

Taurus - Second House - to have
Material possessions, money, finance, where you are valued by society, your talents and abilities to earn money to provide material security, connectedness to the earth through gardening, practical art and food.

Gemini - Third House - to communicate
All forms of communication, talking, reading, writing, teaching; self-expression through language. Connecting and networking; the World Wide Web is a perfect example of Gemini, Third House energy.

Cancer - Fourth House - to belong
Your cultural roots and heritage, family and the home, base camp. This area is concerned with the domestic side of life; the nurturing and caring of the family in order to provide solid foundations for it to grow healthy and strong, sometimes extended to you town, country, the roots of patriotism.

Leo - Fifth House - to create
This is the House of Fun where we play, create (noise, havoc, art, and music) and express ourselves like the big kids that we are. Sociable and interactive, and also the area where we take risks and play games of chance, gamble and let off steam.

Virgo - Sixth House - to serve
Here we grow up a bit and recognise our responsibilities; we need to give something back to the community through our efforts and our abilities to look after people who need us (sometimes we get paid for it!). We can develop our organisational skills and plan our next twenty-four hours.

Libra - Seventh House - to relate
This area of the chart corresponds to all one to one relationships, partnerships and business partnerships, and open enemies. In what way do we attract and find ourselves mirrored in others? Where does "I" become "We"?

Scorpio - Eighth House - to transform
A complex house with the hidden depths of Pluto, as its ruler. This is the area concerned with the natural cycles of birth, death, and rebirth or transformation. In our lives it is concerned with the crises we encounter through death and money, and our debt to society. Sexuality, as an intimate expression of who we are and transcend everyday reality.

Sagittarius - Ninth House - to explore
Life teaches us many things and our experience shapes our reality. Here we develop our own truths and ideas and formulate our ethics and beliefs. It is the House of spiritual growth and also the spirit of the law (not the letter of the law, which is Mercury's domain). We explore mentally through higher education, and physically through long distance travel forever searching for more experience and understanding.

Capricorn - Tenth House - to achieve
This is where we are judged by society and recognised for our outward achievements. A powerhouse in the outside world and the expression of our chosen profession. We achieve status and success through our interaction with the world, which gives us honour and respect.

Aquarius - Eleventh House - to innovate
Through working within groups of like-minded individuals, we can change the world and recognise our global village. We can cut through boundaries and borders and reach out in friendship to people on the other side of the world. We see that society changes all the time, and we aim to improve our connectedness with others, sometimes through modern technology, like the Internet.

Pisces - Twelfth House - to reintegrate
Here we come full circle back to the beginning. We now have a sense of who we are and what we may become, but we can never escape our deepest selves. A private area of the chart where we can explore our thoughts and dreams through images and pictures. A place where we can begin to understand our actions and motives through self-reflection and return to a sea of consciousness. http://www.annabelburton.com/astrology_articles_houses.html

And also this- http://www.aspect.f9.co.uk/housesummary.htm I cant post this as its in a box (lol!) but its a pretty cool page including the rulers of each house.

Oh..and this;

The Houses in Astrology
The houses of a chart in astrology begin with the ASCENDANT (also known as the Rising Sign). This being the sign and degree which was rising on the Eastern horizon at the time of birth. This is the cusp of the first house and all the houses following it go round the chart anti-clockwise. As the natural zodiac begins with Aries, the first house has affinities with that sign, and each house in turn has affinities with its relevant sign of the zodiac. Thus the houses and what each represents, follow the same order as the zodiac, but are expressed according to the sign on the cusps and the planetary placements within.

The six houses below the horizon line of the Ascendant/Descendant are the personal houses, while the six above the horizon are the public houses.

There are three types of houses in astrology. They correspond to the Qualities of Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. These houses are two sets of opposite houses and as such bear similar attributes although borne out in different ways. For instance, the second house governs personal finances and its opposite house, the 8th, governs the finances of others. Hence there is always some relationship between the opposing pair. The types of houses are:

Angular

Those houses which are formed from the two main axis of the chart, i.e. the Ascendant/ Descendant and the MC/IC namely the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses. These are the most important as they govern the development stages of life: birth, childhood, relationships and achievements. They are the initiating houses where the beginnings begin. Corresponding to the quality of Cardinal.

Succeedent

These are the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses. These houses concern the necessary stability as foundations for the implementation of the beginnings of the Angular houses. They tend to have a bearing on the feelings and emotions. Corresponding to the quality of Fixed.

Cadent

These are the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th houses. These houses concern the completion of the processes of the previous types and then allowing for new beginnings. They tend to have a bearing on the mental level. Corresponding to the quality of Mutable.

The parents in the 4th and 10th houses have been purposely omitted, as there appears to be some conflict of opinion as to which parent belongs with each house. Some of the older books of astrology say the fourth house is the mother, the tenth the father, but more recent books have it the other way round. As the moon is the natural representative of the mother and has rulership over the 4th house, it would seem natural to use that house for that parent. Opinion being divided, it can be taken that the 4th house rules the parent who had the most influence during childhood. http://www.aquamoonlight.co.uk/houses.html

Hope all this helps Yang!

Well if u follow the links I gave you, they have more information of the planets in houses, like for example;

The Sun in the Third House: The Sun shows where you want attention and admiration, and in the third house, that means through your communications. This placement makes a person a little bit hyper (like a Gemini) always seeming to be in motion and increasing the need for sensory stimuli. If there are siblings, at least one will tend to be an attention-getting show-off. http://www.bobmarksastrologer.com/thirdhouse.htm-off

And also, if u do your chart on astro.com and open up the interactive personal chart section (astro click portrait) and you can click on all your planets and houses ect and get instant detailed information about what they all mean.

Sun in the Third House

Your mind is active, quick and quite curious. You are fond of talking and asking questions, although you sometimes speak when you have nothing to say. The more you can see and experience, the happier you are.

Your curiosity and your quick mind will help you in school, but you will have to learn to discipline yourself.
When you are older, communications may be an important part of your career.
You like to match wits with others, as in arguments, both friendly or unfriendly, and in word games or puzzle solving.

Wow!!
