I might have asked this a long time ago, but are there any indications in the natal chart of mental health problems? Some of it is genetic I understand, because my mother is schizophrenic, manic depressive, and has bipolar disorder. I've spoken with counselors and therapists, and I'm beginning to feel I may be mentally ill as well. A lot of the things that characterize my mother's disorder are becoming increasingly apparent in my own personality as well. I thought it would be interesting to note if there are any major trends in the chart which point to mental illness.

Ahh I've been thinking of asking this question too! I wanted to study mental illness according to astrology intensely but dunno if such a thing exists. (I've actually been diagnosed as either have seasonal affective disorder or bipolar disorder) So far the only thing I've run across, which is actually in my chart, is Mercury conjunct Saturn being common in people who suffer from depression. *ponders*

Oh no the psychologist in me is taking over....

First thing, don't worry about what your mothers illnesses are, this does not mean that you are going to have them, you are not doomed to mental illness!

Don't try to diagnose yourself, if you are feeling weird/bad, see a counselor, diagnosing yourself leads to self-fulfilling prophecies, which can make you sick when you actually aren't.

What sort of symptoms are you experiencing? Are your sleeping/eating patterns changing? Are you hearing voices? Are your social patterns changing?

I'll take a look at your chart if you want, I'm not a bad chart reader....

Well, its normal to eat more during the winter, as our body must burn more calories to keep warm, are you eating less or just less meals? As long as you aren't purging, or your weight isn't yoyoing, and thats the only thing goin on you don't have a problem. I think seasons affect us in a lot of ways, sex drive, energy level, etc..

I've read a lot into this stuff, mental illnesses and the birth chart. I've read about studies done on mentally ill people and chart comparisons, ect. There are a lot of factors that can play into it, but if the 12th House has a lot of influence in your chart, that's one of the most obvious ones because the 12th House rules hospitals, asylums, ect. But there's a lot online you can read about that. I lost all the links when my computer crashed a few months ago, but if you search Yahoo or something there's plenty to find about it. It's really very interesting.

interesting / i wonder the same thing sometimes as far as the 12th house is concerned. do you think what influences pluto, true node, and/or singletons be a starting basis to working with mental discrepencies then incorporating them into say whatever house venus is in?

i forgot about also incorporating mercury in significance to which house venus is in.

i was thinking too of astrology being considered in coming up with options to facing issues such as mental illness.

A good book to leaf through would be Astrological Timing of Critical Illness by Noel Tyl. I'm not going to point out specifics that he mentions in regards to others charts as relating to depression, for example, simply because the idea is not that having planet positioned at x place in y house with an angle to z planet is going to cause depression but rather that this configuration or something similar might be indicative of it or the person might be more prone to it at certain times in their life. It's an interesting read without being overly techinical and, I think, certainly worth looking into.

Blueroamer,
I've been to countless psychologists and they always tell me the same thing, it's normal in people my age to be depressed, but I've had major depression for about the past three years. Recently, It's been escalating. I've been paranoid, unable to cope with stress, and always exhausted from overwhelming anxiety. I've heard voices of people close to me talking badly about me. I'm always afraid my friends will reject/abandon me because of something I say or do. I'm afraid they'll kick me out of their apartment, and I've got no where else to go, except with my mentally abusive stepfather.

Another weird thing is I've had scary premonitions. I kept having reoccuring dreams of everything being on fire, and a few days later, our apt. caught fire. About a week later, I saw a flash of light, and saw my own death. I blacked out after that.

I'd greatly appreciate if you could interpret my chart. I kind of stopped studying astrology for about 6 mos. so I am a bit rusty as you could imagine.

However, I've theorized my recorded birth time may be wrong because I strongly feel I might have a Cancer asc.

Dorkus -

Are you being perfectly clear to these therapists about what's happening? In other words, are you cleaning it up as you are discussing it, so much so, that they are convinced you'll do well handling all this?

Noel Tyl has written that "Many mental breaks are what could be seen as spiritual emergancies."

Perhaps by approaching it in this way, rather than from a purely clinical approach, will help you consider some alternatives. I know how it is when you're going through a really REALLY challenging time, and someone recommends sipping on Cammomile. It's an aggravating response.

But think of these things as small steps towards eliminating habits which are not helping you, with habits which when taken as a whole, really does make a difference.

So drink Cammomile instead of soda. That kind of thing.

I'm keeping an eye out for more info. Many of us here, and many representing ALL facets of life are continually challenged in this way, including me.
