Hi, dear Lindaland forum aficionados, my first foray here! I hope to meet some of you in the astrology class.
Anyone familiar with the particularities of the dreaded saturn transit over the moon, which begins its deletrious effects 2.5 years before the actual transit, continues 2.5 years in the house in which the moon resides and continues to cast its shadow another 2.5 years throughout the following house, each segment of the 7.5 "learning experience" being called a dhaiya. Obviously a personal question...

i was about to start a post on sade sati when i saw ur thread. good. i have a smiliar question on sade sati...

just like sade sati is with respect to the moon in indian astrology is it with respect to the sun in western astro?

sade sati literaly means seven and a half.

hope it happens with respect to the moon in western astro too. that would mean less punishing time to bear.

Thanks for the enthusiastic welcome, Astro Junkie. I'm amazed that people know how to make moving pictures in texts. I just looked up the smiley page to see how it works, since clickign and dragging and dropping a heart didn't work.
What a new experience to be here. My first such encounter with a -- user's group? chat room? forum? I'm not sure how it all works, hope I don't make any egregious errors or offend anyone. However knowing I'm with astrologically interested people makes me feel somehow less awkward and even creates a sense of community despite the distances. How nice to see someone from India is writing, too! Welcome fellow sojourner!

I have been pleased with the (free-- how generous!) informative newsletters I receive from cyberastro.com from your homeland, India. Perhaps you can find some useful, specific information there?

Offend? Please be gentle Astro Junkie and Archer.... remember, I'm going through sade sati-- the devastating Saturn-Moon transit in my 4th and am feeling just how shakey and scary the trembling ground under my timid feet is. And while the entire issue of my roots, origins and present family and home are being harshly judged, Neptune is dissolving my career house, whacking my natal Mercury, creating great confusion. So here I am, no ground under my feet walking blindly in a fog, daring to enter a users' group with highly sophisticated computerati who know how to do things I didn't even know were possible... and now.... now .... no, please be kind. I'm a frustrated, middle-aged, stuck-at-home-be-everyone's-maid mother living in an often crushingly unfriendly and utterly inconvenient country, where the concepts polite and 24/7 do not exist and no one ever taught the Germans the meaning of forming and standing in a line.

What is Sade-sati?

by Chakrapani Ullal

When Saturn is transiting through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd house from the natal moon, this is termed Sade-sati. “Sade-sati” literally means 7 ½ years, which means that Saturn naturally takes 2 ½ years in its transit from one house to another house. This transit is considered particularly important in Vedic Astrology because this transit is supposed to indicate difficult results either to the native or the native’s close relatives. When people are not properly informed about its malefic influences, they are likely to misunderstand the magnitude of the real experience.

We have included a link to a chart of today’s date for your curiosity. You can see that Saturn is currently transiting Taurus. If you have a copy of your chart, you can look and see if you yourself are experiencing Sade-sati. If your natal moon is located in Aries, Taurus or Gemini, you are most definitely in Sade-sati.

Generally, Saturn brings increased hardship and suffering around the 30th year, around the 60th year, and then again around the 90th year if the native is still alive. This does not mean that Sade-sati is taking place on your 30th year. It can begin anytime before your 30th year, and then repeats itself every 30 years thereafter. With regard to the Sade-sati transit in particular, one can expect to experience it about two or three times within one’s lifetime. In rare cases, a person may undergo up to 4 Sade-sati cycles in their lifetime. First cycle Sade-sati generally affects close relatives more than the native. The 2nd cycle influences the domestic front as well as the business front, and the 3rd cycle affects children, family, health, and physical suffering or may even indicate the death of the native. 4th cycle Sade-sati brings liberation from either the body or the soul or, possibly, both.

It should be noted that this dreaded influence does not necessarily conclude when Saturn exits the 2nd house from the natal moon. When Saturn passes through the 8th house from the natal moon, it is called Astham Sani (translated 8th Saturn). This 8th house transit is considered equally negative like the Sade-sati transit. As it is known, the 8th house is a malefic house and any malefic planet transiting this house either from the moon or from the rising sign, is bound to bring malefic results (unless the native is passing through a good dasha/Bhukti). The 8th house transit indicates worry, suffering, and misery for the native.

Similarly, when Saturn passes through the 4th house from the birth moon, it is supposed to give negative results. This position of Saturn is called Ardha Sade-sati (Half-Sade-sati). Some people consider the transit of Saturn from the 5th house of the natal moon as negative because it affects the quality of one’s judgment. However, it is always important to keep in mind, when judging the effects of a particular transit, that planetary transits are always subordinate in influence to birth chart indications as well as to the influences of the currently operating Dasa and Bhukti cycles.

Sade-sati’s notorious reputation derives from the fact that the Moon rules the mind and the emotions while Saturn rules suffering; therefore, an individual can expect an increase in emotional and mental duress during this transit.

Sade-sati House Indications
Specific house indications of Sade-sati are as follows:

· Saturn, when transiting 12th house from the Moon indicates loss of prestige and honor, aimless travel, lack of comfort in living, arguments, and poverty.

· Saturn in the 1st house where the natal Moon resides indicates character assassination (Bill Clinton), mental afflictions, and sorrows.

· In the 2nd house from the natal Moon, the native’s mind becomes unsound, innumerable worries accumulate, there is a general failure to achieve good results, the native experiences ill health, and misunderstandings arise. There is also a considerable amount of financial stress.

However, it is wise to remember that all people having Sade-sati will not necessarily experience the same or even similar results. Many people even experience exceptionally positive results in the areas of success, finances, property, or increased status during this evil transit (i.e. Bill Clinton, Indira Gandhi). The nature of results has to do with Saturn’s relationship to the rising sign, the Moon sign, and the indications of Saturn’s influence for a particular rising sign.

Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. It is also the yogakaraka (that planet which has the power and energy to bring growth, progress, prosperity, good luck and good fortune) for Taurus and Libra rising signs. When Sade-sati occurs for Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius moon signs as well, the Sade-sati may not give them as much negative results. Its evil influence is reduced to a great degree in these circumstances. This is because Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius and Libra and Taurus are ruled by Venus; who is a friend of Saturn. Natives with Capricorn or Aquarius Lagnas or with their Sun in Taurus or Libra may experience hardship during Sade-sati, but may emerge unharmed because of a reduction in its usual evil influence.

8 Division Approach to Sade-sati

We can summarize the results of the ongoing Sade-sati. This method used to profile Sade-sati results, divides the 7-½ year transit period of 2700 days into 8 parts. Each division carries its own particular indications as follows:

# Of days physical influence results

100 mouth loss

400 right arm victory

600 feet foreign travel

500 belly gains

400 left arm sorrow

300 head elevation to position

200 eyes happiness

200 rectum sorrow

We know that each sign of the zodiac relates to a particular part of the human body. The body part affected during Sade-sati is determined according to the relative strengths of the Rising sign and the Moon sign. Whichever influence is stronger indicates which body part will be most sensitive to disease or disorder during Saturn’s transit.

Examples

If Aries (representing the head) is the ascendant or the Moon sign itself, then Saturn’s transit through the Moon sign indicates vulnerability for the head and troubles therein. Bad judgment can also be a result of this transit.

If the rising sign is Taurus (representing the throat), then swellings or afflictions to the throat are indicated.

Suppose the birth chart Moon is in Taurus and Saturn is in the 4th house from the natal moon. If Saturn then transits through this 4th house, which is in itself a very difficult transit, the native may suffer from chest pains, hardening of the arteries, etc. If Saturn transits through the 5th house, the native will primarily experience mental suffering due to the suffering of his children’s health and his digestive system will become very sensitive possibly creating constipation, hemorrhoids, etc. Since Saturn acts as a functional benefic for Taurus these conditions may not bring permanent harm. Rather, the native will experience a period of temporary suffering.

If Libra is the ascendant, and the Moon is in Virgo, the Sade-sati years will bring financial stress, emotional issues with family, and disputes. However, since Saturn happens to be a yogakaraka, then the troubles would be over without too much suffering. Whenever Saturn becomes a benefic planet or yogakaraka, then the troubles can be overcome or minimized.

As we can make out, many considerations have to be taken into account when analyzing the influence of the Sade-sati as well as the transit of Saturn. In the final analysis, Sade-sati can be burdensome and frustrating, or it can uplift the native and bring success with responsibility. Overall, with persistent effort, Saturn’s transit can raise the consciousness and make one more spiritual than before the Sade-sati began. Sade-sati’s significance is its ability to transform a person’s spiritual awareness. On the surface, the struggles are immense, but only as a purifying catalyst for further growth.

Thank you Archer. I have been reading your various threads and find your quest for clarity and self-knowledge, for direction and healing fascinating. I also find it sweet and affirming that you can be so honest with yourself and us. That takes true courage! What do you study? I agree that your interest in finance and proclivity for deal-making and magnifying business opportunities (which you said your father capped) stem from your strong 2nd house. Business ventures and sales would be fulfilling. Just stay away from any corrupt underworld dealings-- don't you have pluto in the second house? And haven't you had some awful encounters with physical violence in school?
Thank you for the sade sati article.
Yours from a country vastly different from the glorious country of India

Thank you AJ. You're a delightful moderator. I wonder how you could have so much time to donate to this forum. You must read voraciously! And be an enormously prolific writer. I'm concerned about the addicting qualities of online communication. Does it lead to social isolation? Does it threaten or rather lessen real action in the so-called real world? Are forum users generally introverted? I notice that you all use beautiful images and extend cyber hugs.... but what about real people with real arms and the real extension of real-world help like running an errand or taking care of someone's child or gasing a car?

I couldn't help but notice in some earlier threads treating Saturn themes that you, too, have Saturn in the 9th in Capricorn. Here in Germany it is said that the 9th is also the house of publishing. I wonder if it is the house of cyber publishing as well? *smile* With Saturn in your 9th you might have some of the same insecurites about higher learning that I have. I studied Comparative Religion (Gnosticism was my great love) and Philosophy (Idealism, Hegel) and German Lit. (Meister Eckhart, Novalis, the Romantics of course)-- but... there is SO much to know and it all goes SO deep... and then there is real life to attend to wit its myriad demands. I found the more I learn the less I know. And the more humble I become. I suppose that is quite saturnine!
Love and admiration to you and your efforts, AJ!

So basically, according to this sade-sati, we're pretty much ALWAYS screwed, not to mention all the other harsh aspects passing us all the time? What are we supposed to do just give up and die? This is why sometimes astrology is better left alone...yes life is hard, most of the time, but the above blurb could make one feel liek jumping out a window

I totally agree...Ive stopped checking my aspects and transits day to day coz I'd rather get up with no dread and face the world...and just try to give it my best every day. Some days I feel particularly sad or cr@ppy and sometimes I think, could it be something going on with my moon? I almost check astro.com and stop myself...hehe... coz I dont want to be able to justify that... I want to move on and make myself better with my own motivation...instead of feeling doomed...

Its probably just me though that interprets them wrong , Im sure theres some other correct, constructive way of interpreting things

btw sun-by, even though we are nice online, that doesn't mean we're not nice offline. I think I get my motivation to do that one kind act everyday from the positive energy I get from both my online and offline friends. sometimes my mother or other people can get on my nerves in real life, but I try to be forgiving...but who doesn't have problems? I think coming online helps me, helps me put my problems in perspective and forget them in front of other people's questions and concerns, and help them instead. I think that if you approach anything with the right intention, it can be a channel for good acts.

Coming online isnt this absolute polar opposite to being nice in real life. They can go hand in hand if you have balance in your personality.

Btw, I was taking an Organizational Behavior class last semester and our professor said that behavioral studies have shown that in general, introverts' actual social life has been affected negatively by online interactions whereas extroverts have simply expanded their online commmunity and offline community by using online services. It depends entirely on your mentality. The internet is a strong medium...and you can use it for good too

Btw I love philosophy and literature (which used to be my dbl majors before I changed majors). My fav. philosophers are Nietzsche and Immaneul Kant, especially the latters Categorical Imperative and Good Will.... very intense
In Lit I like Milton, Joyce, Bronte, love Faulkner... and countless others...

Thanks Sun-by -

I've found much support, kindness and wisdom in this forum, and yes, it is a form of publishing ...

But the great thing is in sharing with my "real-life" acquaintances something cool I saw here, as well as sharing something I learned through firsthand observations with those here at the forum ...

Dear SG, your name evokes fond childhood memories of the book and later movie(s), whichI have watched with my children. And the book of course is full of mythic enchantment and the power of love and nature triumphing over dis-ease and dys-function. So you have selected a beautiful alias.
I agree with your organ'l behav. prof. RE introverts. I'm sure you've read the thread on Nancy Fenn and her coaching and articles on introversion and business, etc.

Glad you delight in philosophers, too. They really take you places you just can't go reading best sellers. Not to bash best sellers. I just wonder why so many people seem to need gratuitous sex and violence.

Nice to meet you, SG.
Nice to meet all of you here.
I'm glad I was led to this site-- by....? whatever higher power intended this blessing.

Love to all of you-- even though I'm sort of blue with all this Saturn oppression and a very distressing and alienating, estranged marriage.

hi sun-by. i'm doing my engineering in 'electronics and telecommunication'. and yes my pluto is in 2nd house. oh yes, i had bad experience with physical violence too. but how did u figure it out?

by the way, a new piece of info has come my way. my indian astrologer told me on sunday that sade sati is also applicable with erspect to the ascendant. that is, is starts from saturn in one's 12th house and ends when saturn exits the 2nd house. but it is not as profound as that with the moon.
