Aselzion answered this question (and other nitty-gritty picky things)to me in this string: http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/003833.html

quote:
Moon's node: TRUE NODE = actual calculated position of the Lunar Nodes. MEAN NODE = a fixed rate of motion ascribed to the nodes equivalent to about 3 minutes of motion daily and usually retrograde. It's the way that they figured the nodes before the dawn of computer accuracy.

More info on nodes I got from somewhere over there:

quote:
Nodes:
The North Node is where the Moon crosses the ecliptic going toward the northern hemisphere, and the South Node is where she crosses the ecliptic towards the south.
The Moon’s Nodes nearly always move in retrograde, meaning they travel backwards through the Zodiac. They make a complete circle through the 12 signs every 18 years. The North Node and the South Node are always directly opposite one another in the sky.
When the New Moon and Full Moon happen near the Moon’s Nodes, we get eclipses. That is because the Earth, Sun, and Moon are lined up so precisely that a shadow is cast.

Interpretation
In a karmic sense, the Moon’s Nodes represent lessons to be learned in this Earthly incarnation. These lessons almost always have to do with the way we connect with others. That’s why the Nodes are associated with patterns of relating, and the wisdom to be found within them is often the key to recognizing and healing patterns of relating which stand in the way of our happiness.

The Nodes come in pairs. The North Node is always directly opposite the South Node. If you want to really understand them, it’s wise to study the 12 signs as pairs of opposites— Aries/Libra, Taurus/Scorpio, and so on. Like the yin/yang symbol, each sign contains the shadow of its opposite. For example, every Aries has a secret wish to be loved and accepted, and every Libra has a “gotta be me” side (or an angry side) that comes out no matter how nice she tries to be.

The South Node represents habit patterns from childhood or from past lives. These are comfortable patterns, but they often get in the way of you having the kinds of connections you want with other people. These are especially powerful if you have a planet conjunct the South Node in your chart.

The sign and house placement of the South Node tells where you have a tendency to totally overdo things, working against yourself. There is a longing there, a craving that is very strong. The nature of this longing is shown by the sign of the South Node. For example, in Taurus, the craving is for material security. In Leo, for recognition. In Gemini, for information.
The sign and house of the North Node represent circumstances and activities that usually feel unfamiliar. It’s the “secret shadow” of the South Node sign, and it’s the key to getting that craving met. That’s why the North node reveals an area of massive growth potential in your life. It’s the key to getting energy flowing.

Sometimes in the astrological literature, you will see interpretations that color the North Node as all positive, and the South Node as all negative. Sometimes they suggest that you should strive to move “toward” the North Node and shun the qualities represented by the sign of the South Node. As if that were possible. This is not necessarily a constructive idea. Your South Node indicates an area of massive talent.

Hope that helps!

I just found this and OMG!!! It is sooooo freaking true!

North Node in Leo and/or in the Fifth House

With North Node in Leo, our South Node is in Aquarius. With North Node in the fifth house, our South Node is in the eleventh house.

A tendency to rely on others who may let us down, to come across as impersonal or distant in our dealings with others, to be fearful of being the center of attention and standing out as an individual, to fear taking risks, and to fall back on peers and community at the expense of our own individuality are some of the issues this position suggests. With this position, we need to avoid falling into the easy trap of worrying about what others think about us. Instead, we need to strike out in our own individual and creative path without fear. We need to make a conscious effort to deal with others in a more personal, involved, and loving manner, rather than falling back on reason and intellect which detaches us from our feelings. We can easily alienate others when we over-emphasize equality to the point that we won't acknowledge individuals' uniqueness. We can too easily lose touch with our own heart by rationalizing our feelings, and become overly involved with other people's problems at the expense of our inner needs for attention. Learning to take personal risks, which requires a certain amount of self-confidence, will help us to achieve inner balance and happiness.

Here's the link if anyone wants to check theirs out: http://www.cafeastrology.com/nodesofthemoon.html

i have my north node in the 8th (same thing as nn scorpio). it doesn't really have anything to do with sex. it is about learning to accept help and merge your energy with others. we are used to doing things the 'hard way', and are too stubborn in this way, almost trapped, and it is about letting go and letting others' energy influence us. anyone with a north node scorpio is in a 'soulmate' lifetime.. so that may be good news!

To complicate things even further (I'm good at doing that - ha ) see what the planetary ruler of your North & South Nodes are & what House they're in. The North Node ruler & House it's in will tell you even more about your Soul Path in this life. And the South Node ruler & House will reveal more about your past life Karma.

My North Node is in Gemini & in the 4th House. The ruler of my North Node is Mercury & it's in Virgo in the 7th House, so all of those hold clues to my Soul Path in this life.
And my South Node is in Sagittarius & in the 10th House. The ruler of my South Node is Jupiter & it's in Cancer in the 5th House, so all of those would indicate what my Past life Karma is.

...ok now I suddenly have that old Culture Club song 'Karma Chameleon' stuck in my head.

"North Node Cancer/South Node Capricorn:

Develop sympathetic qualities and tenacity, and try to control pessimism, cynicism and self-absorption.
North Node Capricorn/South Node Cancer:
Develop efficiency, patience and self-discipline, and try to control hypersensitivity, clinging and criticising."

AND

"Giving a tendency to be cool, calculating, cautious, reserved, withdrawn, and too concerned with bottom line material concerns at the expense of emotional needs. The Cancer North Node means that the feelings and instincts have to be developed as well as that Cancer nurturing ability."

Atlantic Myst ~ Your True Node/North Node is Cancer & its in the 12th House. Cancer is ruled by the Moon & in your chart the Moon is in Taurus & in the 11th House.
So your Soul Path in this life is through the things associated with Cancer & Taurus, the Moon & Venus, and the 12th & 11th Houses.

Your South Node is Capricorn & its in your 6th House. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn & in your chart Saturn is in Libra in the 4th House. Some of your Past Life Karma is through the things associated with Capricorn & Libra, Saturn & Venus (again!), and the 6th & 4th Houses.

To find further clues to what this Karma may be, also look at the aspects to any of these Nodes, Planets & Houses.

...I know it probably all sounds very confusing. For me, trying to figure all this stuff out - even after years of studying astrology - is like putting a giant jigsaw puzzle together and there always seems to be a few pieces missing.

More on the north node or as the Indians in Vedic Astrology call it "Rahu" from Astrocenter.com:

"We were discussing some elements of astrology and its effect on
life when Saturn is posited in the 8th house. When Saturn is
aspecting the 10th house, it does not mean that your career is
finished. What it means is that you may experience many job
changes in life. This kind of situation is also created by another
malefic Rahu. In fact Rahu is perhaps best in the 10th house as it
definitely stops us from getting stagnated at position content and
without much complaint. Rahu gives insatiable desire and when
this insatiable element is associated with Career, there is progress.
Of course the person should be able to draw a balance some
where and stop the job hopping. So when astrologers fear that
Rahu will mature at the age of 42, you must also draw the line
quickly that Rahu will require being balanced and career changes
must be well thought about from now on."
