Since I started studying Astrology I've learned that house placements tend to be much more meaningful than sign placements.

Then I discovered the Sidereal Zodiac, which is about 24 degrees behind the familiar Tropical Zodiac and thought that might be the reason why.

Today I was reading Jung's Aion and came across this:

quote:
The precession of the equinoxes was a fact well known to the astrologers of antiquity. Origen, helped out by the observations and calculations of Hipparchus, uses it as a cogent argument against an astrology based on the so-called "morphomata" (the actual constellations): "There is indeed a theory that the zodiacal circle, just like the planets, is carried back from setting to rising [or: from west to east], within a century by one degree;... since the twelfth part [1 zodion] is one thing when conceived in the mind, another when perceived by the senses; yet from that which is conceived only in the mind, and can scarcely, or not even scarcely, be held for certain, the truth of the matter appears."

I don't quite understand that argument against the "morphomata" or Sidereal Zodiac. What I'm looking for is a clear explanation of why we use the Tropical instead of the Sidereal Zodiac for Astrology. I understand the Astronomy of it - that the constellations no longer line up with the dates the way they once did, but why do we choose to associate our contemporary Zodiac with the original dates rather than with the original Constellations, and not the other way around?

I would love to see any good articles on this topic, as well as any that make a case for the use of the Sidereal Zodiac. Please link me up if you know of any! Or just explain it to me and help me understand! Thanks!

I would sign up to the Yahoo Sidereal astrology group and ask a few questions there. As long as you say you're a beginner, I don't think they'll be too hard on you.

In the "files" section in the Sidereal Astrology group there's a whole bunch of text articles that Fagan/Bradley wrote early on about Sidereal astrology. You can check a few of them out.

Here's how the zodiac has "moved" out of it's position. If I get this wrong, I'm 16, I'm still new to this.

Ptolemy, the originator of the tropical zodiac decided to label all the signs. For example, he labeled Aries "hot and dry." He then tried labelling the seasons/time of year to match the signs. Saying that early life is "cool and moist" and should then be associated with Spring time, or the first days of Aries which marks Spring. A sign he labelled "hot and dry."

At the time, the Sidereal and Tropical longitudes were the same. Since then, a slight wobble of Earth's rotation moved the position of the planets/stars from Earth 1 degree every 72 years since 200 AD, when Ptolemy decided that the zodiac starts with the Spring equinox point. So now the planets and stars are about 25 degrees behind the Tropical zodiac's longitudes, according to the Sidereal Zodiac and according to astronmers who see the stars in their actual positions.

I've found the Sidereal zodiac to be more accurate, when it comes to signs and predictions. Sidereal astrologers pay a lot more attention to the planet's aspects to other planets and placements in the houses, rather then the signs.

I know this is a little off topic, but I have a friend who has practically the same chart as me. The same Sun,Moon,Asc, Mercury,Venus,Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto, according to Tropical longitudes. We act nothing alike. The only difference - his Sun, Venus, Mercury, and ASC go back a sign in the Sidereal zodiac.

This post is a little long, sorry. Good luck with finding information on the Sidereal zodiac, there isn't much out there.

Because the Sidereal zodiac is aligned with the stars and the Tropical zodiac is aligned with the seasons, I believe.

I like the Tropical zodiac better, really.

geminstone, thanks for the link! I got through the main page, will dig deeper after I finish with a book that's currently consuming my time...

Crystal, thanks for sending me in that direction... I just signed up for the group and browsed the titles of the files. There are a lot of them... any in particular I should read?

I don't know yet whether I'll adopt the Sidereal Zodiac or just or just stop considering sign placements (anyone else do that?!) All I know right now is that Tropical Zodiac sign placements are not working for me.
I'm changing my sig if I can figure out how... I'm not a Libra Sun, I'm a 9th House Sun!

I know there's a lot of files to read there. I would go through the signs first, just to get a basic understanding of some of the differences (I think they're the files that are just titled Aries.txt to Pisces.txt) Get your chart done in the sidereal zodiac on astro.com then read the files for the signs of your sun and moon sign, and see if it seems remotely accurate.
A lot of the sidereal astrologer don't agree with those interpretations of the signs, since they were written so early and before the longitude of the fixed star Spica was realized.

You're a libra sun? My mom is a Libra sun/sidereal virgo sun and she's a book worm. She always has a book or a newspaper in front of her (influence of mercury, maybe?) Unfortuanlty I didn't inherit that gene, since I can't seem to sit through a chapter.
