THE VERTEX IN THE NATAL CHART
by Lynn Koiner

The Vertex is almost always found on the right or occidental side of the horoscope. The exception occurs in extreme northern latitudes. The occidental side of the horoscope is co-dependent and other-directed so that the Vertex represents characteristics, attributes, qualities and skills to be cultivated in this lifetime through the demand and urging of other people. For those interested in esoteric astrology, my theory is that the Vertex indicates the Ray energy to be cultivated in this lifetime – a shift in the personality, astral or mental body.

When there are transits or progressed aspects to the Vertex, the qualities of the Vertex sign will be emphasized. Under favorable aspects, we are drawn by people (indicated by the House position) to express the aptitudes of the Vertex sign. Under afflictions, we seem to have problems with the Vertex sign energy.

Aries: In cultivating Aries energy, you will be drawn into taking charge in emergencies, taking the initiative and developing fast solutions to crises situations. There will be no time to coordinate efforts. Circumstances in the life will force you to pick up the reins of leadership and react to emergencies as a trouble shooter. You will be commanded to be your own person rather than stay on the sidelines, waiting for someone else to do it or ducking out completely.

Taurus: You will be forced to develop a sense of self-worth and material self-sufficiency, not relying upon others for support and not being obligated to others. You may be drawn into helping others achieve financial security or make value judgments for another. Freedom is found through financial independence. Esoterically, it is associated with the ability to let go, to simplify that which is complicated and to extricate by eliminating indebtedness. This can be for self, as well as others. Speak your truth when necessary and honor your own values and principles. Be willing to stand up for what you believe to be true.

Gemini: You will be drawn to teach, to present your own ideas and to back up the information with facts. Gemini will draw you into a relationship or work activity that will demand that you learn to be flexible and to do more than one thing at a time. Flexibility is often connected with allowing others to change their minds, something that Gemini does quite easily.

You may be forced to debate and prove your views or to relay the messages of others correctly. You may be forced to prove your believability, choosing your words correctly and not relying upon generalities. Such an individual may not like the pressure of facts but this will ultimately build confidence in communication skills. You will learn that in theorizing you give your power away, being at the mercy of others who fight with the facts.

Cancer: In this life, you will be pulled into dealing directly with the public, with the media, with the emotions of others ˆ often this starts with the emotional issues in the family, depending upon the Vertex House position. In dealing with the emotional issues in your relationships with others, you will be drawn into soothing troubled water and nurturing others‚ needs. You may also be drawn into dealing with issues connected with women in general. Cancer is the sign of the masses, mass trends and Universal Consciousness. This position can provide and opportunity to assess and spot trends on behalf of the public interest.

The natural tendency with the anti-vertex in Capricorn is to appear authoritative and unemotional. Now you are to learn compassion for the feelings of others. In this lifetime, you cannot let others down. You must get emotionally involved and care!

Leo: In this lifetime, you must learn to get personally involved so that you gain recognition for yourself and not share the glory with the group. You are to learn to be creative and to cultivate Self-Expression and Willpower. The tendency is to fade into a group rather than individualize. Individualization is the task at hand. A personal approach to dealing with people is needed rather than a detached and objective orientation.

I have a good friend with the Vertex in Leo. Her natural tendency is to give to the group without individual recognition. I cannot help but feel that there is much frustration when the group and her partner gets the recognition and she does not. Even her writing style tends to be philosophically Aquarian, lacking in a personal revelations. When this point was hit by a transit, she found it impossible to gain the personal recognition. The timing was wrong.

Virgo: In this lifetime, the individual will be drawn to provide a service which brings something to a practical, useful order. Since the anti-vertex is in Pisces, the individual already understands and has experienced confusion but now you must learn to bring order out of chaos. Remember, Virgo rules useful service, not servitude. One client has this Vertex in the 7th and she is an accountant, working on the financial chaos of others.

Libra: In this lifetime, the individual will be drawn into learning how to bridge opposing factions, to mediate compromises, to restore fairness and to bring harmony out of conflicting issues in order to re-establish peace and order. Because the anti-vertex is in Aries, the individual must not allow personal desires to influence the situation. The individual must not take sides or impose the personal ego. The need is to detach the self, make no judgments and establish harmony that would benefit the whole rather than any specific individuals.

Scorpio: In this lifetime, the individual will be drawn into dealing with that which is complicated, matted and ensnared. Plutonian issues connected with the abuses of power can be involved, fighting for the rights involved with exploitation issues. The individual maybe drawn to working with the finances of others, assisting them in achieving security and empowerment. I have one client who was compelled to investigate death/dying issues, learning to transform and heal, learning metaphysics in order to help others.

Since Taurus is the anti-vertex, it is too easy to stay in one‚s comfort zone, taking the line of least resistence, not jeopardizing personal security and comfort. You must give strength and courage to the concerns of others, overcoming the fears that make you too comfortable with the status quo.

Sagittarius: In this lifetime, you must go beyond the facts in order to see the Big Picture. You may be drawn to give testimony wherein you must draw conclusions from many facts. The Gemini details may look good for now but they do not serve in the long run. The individual must teach at an expanded or philosophical level based upon the accumulated facts ˆ extracting wisdom from what you know. Go beyond the facts to the truth of the matter. Do not get bogged down with superficial, gossipy information. You will be drawn to deal with philosophical, spiritual or moral issues in connection with the Vertex House position.

Capricorn: The individual will be called to develop skills in responsible leadership. It is essential that you learn to accept duties and obligations for a future control. Leadership and organizational ability go hand-in-hand and you must learn patience to cultivate these skills. Do not allow your emotions and fears to interfere with a realistic attitude in administration. It is essential that the individual not allow the needs of home, family or feelings of insecurity to impede in fulfilling your destiny and thereby rise to a position of respect.

Aquarius: First, you must learn tolerance for the differences in others. This would be particularly true if Saturn and Earth-Water signs are strong in the chart. If Uranus and Fire-Air signs are strong, the individual must learn how to coordinate one‚s efforts with other independent, task oriented types. Regulating Uranian people is a hard-learned lesson! Since the anti-Vertex is in Leo, the individual must guard against allowing one‚s strong subjective and “MY WAY” opinions to interfere with cooperation. The lesson is to be detached and impersonal.

Any prejudices will come back to haunt you in this lifetime. Learn to be a good friend, to be a part of group effort rather than trying to shine on one’s own. When tolerance is not an issue for the individual, I find that there is some difficulty working with group energy. One client felt that she needed to learn to function and protect herself while working within groups.

Pisces: In this lifetime, the individual is to cultivate sensitivity for the intangibles rather emphasizing the pragmatic, the materialistic and the fine points fo detail. The individual will go through experiences that bring out compassion, the ability to listen with empathy to the concerns of others, and experiences that will make for greater sensitivity to the suffering of others. Another lesson is to let go of criticism. With the anti-Vertex in Virgo, it is easy to zero in on the details, the flaws and imperfections, losing sight of the whole. Learn to go with the flow. Do not judge by rules but rather by instinct and compassion.

Hi, Gang
I've also read about the vertex fairly extensively, and yes it does appear to be quite significant in relationships. It signifies events or people who can redirect the projectile of your life - in essence, quite life altering. It usually falls within the right quadrant of your chart, which is where the relationship houses are, so it often represents key people in your life. My daughter's dad's sun conjuncts my vertex. Having a baby was quite life altering, I'd say. (the sun also happens to be the natural ruler of the 5th, the house that rules children, offspring) My vertex also happens to be in Cancer, so it's fitting that he made me a mother. (well, it was team-work, really lol...)

Geminstone, I'm inclined to think that having Saturn conjunct this point could actually deter one from following the path it decribes, or make it seem very heavy and full of obsticles. Life circumstances may urge you one way, and he may give you alot of grief about following that urge. But, it could also solidify your conviction about doing exactly that. Just my theory.

Thanks, Peri
That was a good read. With my vertex in Cancer, it made alot of sense - since I do work with the public, and I do seem to play the role of "Dear Abby" to almost everyone I know. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it. I don't mind really. Everybody needs a support network, or just a shoulder sometimes.

Vertex is also known as the 5th angle.

It is like a turning-point-in-your-life button in the chart. It may seem that things that happen to you come out of nowhere and you did not expect them to happen at all but
this is only 'on the surface'.
Spiritually not consciously, you needed these changes(sometimes even crisis).

Vertex works only as the activation device when everything else is ready; in synastry, the other person usually works as this activation device.

(Anti)Vertex conjunction may fill you up with the sense of needing to bring something (or someone) to "completion." You may even find that you simply can't let go of that Vertex person (maybe for years or even decades) until the business between to two of you is finished and/or somehow felt to be complete. There must be some "output" or "outcome" of your relationship. When deep inside we feel we need to change (though we may not be aware of it) the Vertex person comes and works as catalyst.
Well, this is at least how I understand it, there is not much info on it though.

Tell me about it!
This is so timely. I know someone who's vertex is conjunct my stellium in Scorpio, and man oh man... this makes sense. there is something 'higher' to this.... and my vertex is in his seventh house.

The Vertex and Critical Events in Your Life ©2000
By Virginia Reyer

The Vertex/Anti-Vertex axis is the intersection of the ecliptic and the prime vertical. It is where the Western sky cuts the ecliptic. Charles Jayne used this axis as an important indicator of critical events in a person's life. Johndro called the Vertex the electrical Ascendant. The opposite point of the Vertex is called the Anti-Vertex or
electrical Descendant. You may draw a line across the horoscope for the Vertex/Anti-Vertex axis. This gives three
dimensions with the three axis, instead of two; six angles instead of four. The Vertex/Anti-vertex axis is the most fated
angle in the chart. The Vertex axis is always due west at the birth, usually falling
from the fifth to the eighth house. It is significant of fateful or Karmic events that play an important part in the person's life.
As the Vertex is always found in the western side of the chart, it involves other people in some way. It may be personal relationships with others or conditions brought about by
others. The Vertex has to do with unrelated people who are significant in one's life, and events with it are more likely to come to pass despite efforts to avoid them . The events pertain to the Midheaven and Ascendant and therefore are valuable in rectifying the natal chart.
We can think of the Anti-Vertex as the cause, and the Vertex as the effect. The Vertex, from all indications, may be read with the same meanings as the seventh and tenth houses
(career, goals, esteem and relationships). The Anti-vertex seems to be related to matters concerning the first and fourth
houses (self, home and heredity). The Anti-vertex is usually found from the eleventh to second houses, and is more
personal in nature. These areas can be triggered by aspects (conjunction, square and opposition) and by progressions and transits. Both points may be triggered by someone else's planetary energy (as applied to synastry). The progressed Vertex and Anti-vertex bring important, and maybe critical times in the persons life.
The actions you initiate with the Anti-vertex will be the effect you reap from the Vertex. House position indicates the area of life involved; signs show the way or manner the energy is used or misused. Aspects show the way this energy is expressed. The Ascendant may be the face you show to the world, but the Vertex shows how the world interprets that face. The Vertex points to the path of growth, the key to self-awareness. Aspects between the planets and Vertex:

Vertex -- Sun They are the risk takers, want to be in the spotlight. Can be politicians, actors, entertainers, or key-people. A strong ego.

Vertex -- Moon Has strong influence on the family. Strong emotions effect interaction with others. Attracts people who want to be mothered. Can be tradesmen, shopkeepers,
homemakers, or home builders.

Vertex -- Venus Attracts a materialistic partner. Love and happiness are necessary for successful relationships. Marriage can bring financial improvement. Occupations such as florists, decorators, cosmeticians, beauticians etc. can be beneficial - also social activities.

Vertex -- Mars Has to do with male relations. Attracts aggressive or assertive people, soldiers, police officers, firemen etc. Needs control, as forceful actions can lead to
violence or accidents to oneself or others. Can experience hatred or heroism. Sacrifice and self-mastery.

Vertex -- Jupiter Can bring overall improvement into the life in work and in health. Influences promoters, judges,
ministers, athletes, college people. Can be self-indulgent. Wants an idealistic or perfect partner. Stimulates aspiration,
tolerance and understanding.

Vertex -- Saturn Signifies hard work in order to reach goals. Politics can be important. Saturn is known for delays, depression, also stick-to-it-iveness and endurance. Rules real
estate, bricklayers, farmers, aged people etc. Brings loneliness due to outside forces. Should look within for guidance. Saturn
helps us bear our karma and pass the tests of life.

Vertex -- Uranus Friends become lovers. It is the reformer, the scientist, inventor, psychologist, travel agent, pilots. May
have to do with electronics, radioactive substances, etc. May cause irritability, nervousness and tension. Also divorce and
many changes. Must use inner perception to respond to higher vibration.

creative ability, intuition and contact with higher invisible realms.

Vertex -- Pluto Pluto is the transformer, the dictator. Deals mainly with groups. Gives intensification, clairvoyance, extra-
sensory perception. Is forceful, bold and magnetic, can be weird. May have to do with convicts, coroners, executioners, gangsters, morticians, the underworld, ambush, rapes. Has to do with Karma. My Vertex is in Capricorn and my grandmother was the single most prominent person in my life. She was a Capricorn (she passed away in September and I felt as if a chunk of me had been ripped away).

Talk about being connected. The power of the Vertex is the real deal folks.

Well, you never know with BML but I think the BML person may change the Vertex person’s life for the worse.

e.g. A 60 year old guy leaves his wife (they have been married for 40 years) and children and grandchildren and runs away with a 20 year old girl to waste all his savings on her and get dumped 2 weeks later; he tries to get his family back but to no avail, they cannot forgive him; etc

I must also add that the BML person is not ‘the evil itself’ , this person just appears in the right place and in the right time to offer the Vertex person what he/she has been secretly looking for.

Or both the Vertex and the BML person may be so irresistibly drawn to each other and feel so deeply connected that they will stay glued for the rest of their lives no matter what.

I think it very much depends on their karmic program.

my husband has his BML on my Verex and I can say he changed my life in worse, I have a lot of restrictions in my life and is not the life I was hoping to have with him, that's why I am divorcing now. Still I think was karmic issues here because I was so irresistibly drawn to him! Hope we'll not stay glued for the rest of their lives ...

Thanks Peri!

Your life is yours, sweety.

No one can make you live their life and pay their karmic debts (and vice versa) until you want to.

Karmic relationship are not necessarily happy ones; We grow spiritually, as we are paying our debts;

The worst thing is not making a mistake but refusing to admit it, learn from it and move on.

Glad this was bumped up.

Peri -

I'm thinking the article on Vetex/Planets means that you look at your Asc, then go by the Planet which Rules your Asc. Is this correct?

Well, I was reading mine and then thought, "That doesn't sound like me at all." But then I remembered that the interpretation does NOT factor in something about YOU and how you are.

The Vertex is basically saying to you, what it is you NEED. Such as when someone says to you, "why do I always go for the jerk?" - if they read their Vertex/Planet (Asc) interp, it won't tell them HOW to get what they need, but what tell they NEED.

Like when you seem to fall into the same relationship habits and wonder if you need to stay on course and persevere, or reassess.

From more recent personal observation I'm convinced astro.com should include the Vertex in the basic fomula, in the same way they include the North Node and Chiron when you do a simple query.

I think the Vertex is up there with Chiron in helping find a good partner in life.
