Does anybody know how to interpret this aspect in a birth chart?-

I haven't found much information about it.

I have Venus Contra-Parallel Mars 0'2-

I've heard that the Parallel aspect is like a conjunction, and the C-parallel works as an opposition...

Is that true?-

dear RBB,

i also have a natal contra-parallel (sometimes transcribed as "contra-//") between venus and 2 other planets -- saturn and pluto in my case.

this is generally true, a parallel works like a conjunction and a contra-parallel like an opposition. some say that a contra-parallel is easier than an opposition...in other words, it functions more positively.

kt boehrer has a great site, here is the link:

http://www.mandala.be/declination/boehrer1.htm

from kt's website:

"Parallels of declination have been discussed in many astrology books. In fact, that old classic The A to Z Horoscope Delineator by Llewellyn George, provides three references to parallels. Everything he said is good and valid, but it was incomplete. Much more recently, Ivy M. Goldstein-Jacobson devoted a considerable amount of space to this subject in almost every one of her numerous and excellent books. William Lilly mentions it and even Ptolemy discusses parallels of declination – very briefly.

It is a subject that has been around for a long, long time during which no one ever really addressed or understood the dimensions and import of declination and its parallels. But even more importantly no astrologer and no astrology book ever (at least in the last thousand years or so) has really defined and described the overpowering importance of declination until my 1975 book, Declination: The Other Dimension appeared. No one has ever recognized the definite and definable influence of declination which would then allow us both finite and infinite knowledge about the reality that is taking place in the heavens around us. This subject is not an old technique rediscovered – unless we are referring to thousands of years old and long-lost techniques (in astrology this is always a possibility.) My work is a 'current' look at the heavens and declination in a novel fashion."

The two aspects found in declination are parallels and contra- or counter-parallels. Parallels happen when two planets fall in the same degree, either both north or both south. Contra-parallels happen when two planets are in the same degree of declination, but one is north and the other is south. The declination of the planets in any given computer chart can be marked as either N (north) or S (south), or marked with a (+) for N, and a (-) for S.

These two aspects have energy manifestations just as longitudinal aspects do. The parallel has been described as being similar in energy to the conjunction, and the contra-parallel to the opposition. Two planets that are in longitudinal aspect i.e., square, trine, conjunction may be in declination aspects also. When this happens, the energy of the pair is multiplied exponentially. It is also the reason why sometimes a wide orb appears to work. But it is important to see if this is so, for many times planets that do not appear to be in aspect longitudinally will be in declination, and their function together must be considered.

The usual orb of influence for a declination aspect is 1º, and this has been the accepted standard for centuries. However, as Charles Jayne pointed out the closer a planet is to the 0 degree line, the faster it moves, so a larger orb could be considered. After a planet passes 19 to 20º of declination, north or south, the daily motion slows down, and a tighter orb would be best. If you are curious, check out several years of declinations with planets at the higher degrees, and then the lower degrees. There is a difference. If you need an ephemeris that gives declination, Michelsen's Ten Year Ephemerides, the Rosicrucian's ephemerides, and the Raphael single year give the measurements.

Difference opinions are mixed as to how the action of declination works. Charles Jayne has some really good work on this subject (and it is in print), if you can keep you mind in gear. He is not always easy to understand. Many astrologers feel that planets in declination are strictly an interior function, a psychological manifestation. Others believe that declination can manifest as outward events, just as longitudinal aspects do. I have seen both work.

what i have found is that it is true: when 2 planets are in longitudinal aspect AND in declinational aspect, it is like the connection between the 2 planets is magnified exponentially. this is what is happening between my venus and my saturn: my venus at 18 aqua squares my saturn at 18 taurus exact, they are also contra-parallel by about a half a degree. this is definitely a challenging combo. i struggle with this one a lot.

from what i have read about venus-mars declinational ties, it would increase one's awareness of sexuality and related issues. if mars and venus are in longitudinal aspect as well, this is definitely intensified.

also watch for declinational transits. i have found that they are VERY much worth looking at.

hope this info helps.

Very fascinating stuff...chrissy does the concept work in synastry or is it merely for natal chart analysis?

ABSOLUTELY this works in synastry!

in my last relationship, i had quite a few declinational ties in addition to longitudinal aspects.

our suns were exactly opposite, off by about half a degree. they were also contra-parallel.

our mercurys were not in aspect, but were parallel by 1 minute - and everytime we got together it was yak yak yak....the conversation never stopped!

we had a venus-uranus square, i think it was his uranus square my venus. but declinationally, his uranus and my venus were in exact parallel - and let me tell you, it was definitely attraction at 1st sight!

additionally, his venus was exactly parallel my jupiter. another strong tie, definitely.

also, his pluto conjuncted my ascendant...my pluto was parallel his DC.

there were lots more declinational and synastry ties, i just wanted to mention those to show how this relationship was definitely reinforced through the declinations as well as the synastry (long. aspects). it was a very intense, very fast, hot, heated thing. there was definitely no ambivalence in this connection.

totally check out declinations - they work!

Red,

I agree with Chrissy...parallels and contraparallels are VERY interesting. The thing that fascinates me is that...using parallels and contraparallels you can have a conjunction in your chart between planets two or more houses away. You can have an opposition between planets which only one house away! For example, if Sun in 7th house is parallel Mercury in 9th house, this COMBINES (conjunction affect) the 7th house focus and 9th house focus of these planets. If Sun in 7th house is contraparallel Mercury in 9th house, this OVER-EXCITES (opposition effect) the 7th house focus and 9th house focus. Parallels and contraparallels truly add another dimension to chart analysis!

Paralleling,

Tim

Chrissy,

Awww! thanxs soo much for your very complete information about Parallels and Contra-Parallels!!-

Examining my chart I found that I have 3 parallels (sun-venus),(jupiter-neptune) and (uranus-neptune)

And 3 Contra-// (Sun-Mars);(Venus-Mars)and(Saturn-Moon)

This is so interesting, I have new stuff to study!!,

thanks again

Tim

You got a very nice point there!-

For example: My venus in the 6th is connected with my Mars in the 9th-

This is very interesting - like you said: "It gives another dimension to chart analysis"-

I really love discovering new aspects to study in my chart (and others)- It spices up the charts- hehe

Thanks so much for the links and the info Chrissy. I have to say there are not that many people who come through my life and make me feel a tug, an incessant pull, and of course this information just sort of points up the contiuing layers.

This stuff is just an initial peek. At some point, I will have to spend more time on it but from first "stare", my Parallels (tight less than 1 orb) Mercury/Pluto; Sun/Vertex; Jupiter/Ascendant and Saturn/Ascendant (just as well keeps me from being totally porky).

What's fascinating in my tie to Doc are these parallels:

My Sun & Vertex/Parallel His Ascendant
My Neptune/His Venus
My Moon/His South Node (note in the natal chart his Sun is conjunct my South Node)
My Saturn/His Descendant
My Ascendant/His Saturn
My Mars/His North Node

The major contra-parallel is:
My Venus (17/33) His Mars (17/10) (This is a square in the natal chart and the Venuses are square in the natal chart)

Oh gosh...so much unfinished intense business.

Yes. Parallels are conjunctions of declination and should be interpreted very much like conjunctions of longitude. Declinations are the measures of planets/points north or south of the celestial equator.

Yes, generally.

chrissymgreen's post above referencing K.T. Boehrer is an excellent summary.

I include declinations in every synastry I do. No synastry is complete without them. In fact, including them shows how silly and undeveloped pop astrology notions of astrological compatibility really are.
