I'm just reading 'Esoteric Astrology' by Alan Leo. (On page 149 of the paperback), he says 'In the lower worlds the ruling planet now becomes the representative ray of the individual and as such appears to be a sub-influence of the primary colouring.' My first question, one that i've been thinking about asking someone for years..how do you determing the 'ruling planet' of a chart, and second question, does anyone understand what Leo is talking about here???

dear san fran jim,

the ruling planet is simply the planet that rules the sign on your ascendant.

some astrologers (for instance stephen arroyo) favor using the traditional rulers for the signs scorpio, aquarius, and pisces. the traditional ruler of scorpio is mars (modern ruler is pluto), for aquarius it is saturn (modern ruler uranus), and for pisces it is jupiter (modern ruler neptune). this is because uranus, neptune and pluto are considered transpersonal planets and do not have very much to say about the conscious personality unless strongly configured, angular, et cetera. so if you have scorpio rising your chart ruler would be mars, if you have aquarius rising your chart ruler would be saturn, and if you have pisces rising your chart ruler would be jupiter.

i have libra rising, so my chart ruler is venus. what alan leo (great mind, btw) is basically saying is that the sign your chart ruler is in, its house placement, and its aspects are all VERY important to coloring the personality (marked by the ascendant -- the ascendant being your basic psychological mask that you filter everything through).

so like, for me, i have libra rising. venus, my chart ruler, is in aquarius. so according to leo, my rising sign is definitely colored by what sign venus is in -- and this is VERY true for me (of course, i also have uranus conjunct the ascendant so this enhances my aquarian tendencies).

my venus is in the 5th house. so again, according to leo this would color how i express my rising sign -- it would tend to center around 5th house activities and affairs like creative endeavors...yada yada.

i also have an exact venus-saturn square. so, again, according to leo this aspect would be a major player in my chart, it would definitely be evident in the expression of my ascendant. it's true, i'm a lot more serious due to this aspect. moody, depressed, practical -- sort of capricornian if you will.

does this nake sense?

hope it helps.

dear SF J,

i also have found this to be very interesting:

Look at the sign at the beginning of any house. Then, find which house has the "Ruling Planet" of that sign. Those two houses will be connected in some way.

i'll use myself as an example again -- the ruler of my 1st house (my ruling planet) is venus, and venus is located in the 5th for me. and i'm an artist!

Lewis Carroll, the creator of "Alice in Wonderland", had Sagittarius on the cusp (beginning) of his First House (self). The ruling planet is Jupiter and it is placed in his Third House (communications). Not bad for a writer. Jupiter is also in the sign of Aquarius, which rules everything strange and bizarre. I think that his writing can put in that category without too much of a stretch.

The Ruling Planet is also significant and will often be more important than the others, in terms of the experiences that are undergone. The Ruling Planet is usually the designated planetary ruler of the Ascendant, but can be another strong planet (such as the Sun-ruler, Moon-ruler, most elevated etc) if the ascendant-ruler is weak by sign or aspect.

Planetary Aspects and Position make a huge difference too, as a debilitated planet will have a quite different effect from the same planet (Sun, Moon etc) when fortified. I should also say that each planet has a primary influence at different times in the individual life, but this is best established by a good astrologer, not a website. There is much more that can be said, but it would take a book to do it in!

and here's an article on health and the ruling planet:

hope this helps ya!

san fran jim,

my rising sign is 12 libra - we're close!

so you've got a scorpio mars in the 2nd opposing jupiter in taurus in the 8th, huh...? well, this seems interesting, because any strongly aquarian individual is going to come along and make a t-square out of your mars-jup opposition (falling in the 5th, i would think...right?)! well, if the degrees are right, that is.

i dont wanna get too techie or confusing, but there's a thread around here somewhere about what scorpio and aquarius have in common. they're actually signs that are what they call ANTISCION to each other, which means they operate as mirror-images - or so they say. i have a paper that i forget who wrote, it is about antiscia synastry and i can send this to you through e-mail if you want.

my e-mail is christina.green@tccd.edu -- just drop me a note if you want me to send the article.

i had a relationship that ended last year that i still can't get over...this person had their venus (7th ruler) in scorpio square to my venus (chart ruler) in aqua...but they were exactly antiscion to each other. let me pull up the link so you can see the table to figure out the antiscions:

http://www.cafeastrology.com/solstice_points_antiscia.html

there's one...and here's another -

http://www.panplanet.com/articles/antiscia.htm

basically, the degrees have to add up to 30. for example, my aqua venus is at 18 degrees aqua, and his scorp venus is at 12 scorp. so you see our venuses were square by 6°, but conjunct each other's antiscion point -- it is also called the solstice point.

this is supposed to make for a VERY strong connection -- sometimes antiscion connections can explain why a couple seems so compelled and drawn to each other, but the regular synastry isnt there giving the reason...couples like diego rivera and frida kahlo, john lennon & yoko ono...they had a number of antiscion connections.

anyway, i digress...i dont know a whole lot about alice bailey (i dont have any of her stuff, havent read any of it extensively), but i did have this one site bookmarked which has a great article on the reversal of the wheel...

hope this helps!

I've heard variations, but it is my understanding is that the Ruling Planet is NOT the Ascendant, but rather the planet controlling your Sun sign.

Check out the book "Ruling Planets" by Christopher Renstrom. I've only seen it in one book store, but I find many libraries carry it.

However, I have also read in Joanna Martine Woolfolk's "The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need" that the Ruling Planet is actually the Ascendant.

So I have no idea.

dear sweetface,

your chart ruler would be saturn, then.

scorpionic web, renstrom's book is a good one, but the title of his book is a bit misleading. the planet that rules the sun sign is an important one to be sure, it definitely colors the personality and lends a sub-tone to the basic ego (sun).

however, it's not the generally accepted ruling planet that astrologers typically refer to when they speak of the RP. the RP is the ruler of the ascendant.

hope this helps!
