I want to learn more about Opposition and Squares, other than that they're "bad", bring tension and problems. Is there anything to look forward to in having these aspects, and how do you work with them?

So Im just posting descriptions from random sites:

quote:
The Opposition is where two planets appear opposite each other from the point of view of the earth. They are 180 degrees apart from each other. This is the 360 Degree circle divided by two. In number symbolism, the number two is a number of division and separation. The unity of the number one is broken. In the Bible after each day of creation it says 'and it was good' except for the second day where this phrase is missed out. Why was this ? It is because with the division created by having two forces there can be disharmony, separation, conflict and opposing ideas. In the symbol of the Tao we have both yin and yang, the two primary forces. If we look around us we see the world divided in two in all aspects of creation, man and woman, night and day, up and down, right and left. Everything we live by is a polarity. Yet in some way this division is also necessary and fundamental to creation. If everything remained a unity and a oneness there would be no separation, no freedom of choice between opposites, no right and wrong and nothing to be done or achieved. This nature of duality or the principle expressed by opposition is that there is dynamic betwen the two poles that animates creation.

We even see this is politics , we have the Republicans and the Democrats in the United States. Through the opposition and debate of these two sets of values we try to find what is the correct path. We need both of these entities to allow our political system to reach a correct balance. If both parties always agreed with another we would have no room for gaining a deeper understanding into the issues.

When the Sun and Moon are in opposition, it is the time of the full moon. The Full light of the Sun is reflected back by the moon. In a similar way when two planets are in opposition they reflect back the qualities of each other. There is however a tension between the two because they do not agree, as they are coming from different sides. Somehow though they are vital to each other to reach an understanding and a balance. In Astrology the Opposition of two planets in the sky also represents two fundamental forces in opposition in the psyche of a person, that are in need of reconciliation. Often a person associates with one side of the opposition and sees the other side as being out there in the world. They therefore find it in another person because they don't acknowledge it as being part of themselves. Let's take an example. A person is born under an opposition between the Moon amd Mars. This person has both these forces inside of them. They have a desire to powerfully express their emotions. Since the two planets are in opposition though, they may associate with the Moon and feel emotional but not powerful. What happens is they are continually attracted to powerful people, since they resonate with the unexpressed Mars inside of themselves. They may have a succession of abusive or aggressive partners or just people who are strong and powerful that they admire. These people are showing them what they actually have inside of them. Once of course they acknowledge their own power they will no longer need to seek it in the outside world. This is the opposition in action. People with oppositions in their chart therefore often learn through relationship with another and in this way learn to acknowledge more of what is inside of themselves.

quote:
The Square Aspect is where two planets are 90 Degrees apart from each other. This is the Circle divided by four. The Harmony of the Three is now disturbed and there is an inbalance that needs to be completed. The number four is also the number of the elements, Fire, Air , Earth and Water. The symbol for the earth is a circle with a cross through it highlighting these four elements. The number four implies manifestation of something in the Earth. With this aspect their is a desire and an urgency to reconcile tension and achieve something tangible. We have words in our language implying the tension around the Square Aspect. 'They Squared up to each other', 'They were Square on'. Since there is a disharmony there is also an energy around the square , something is not finished or is out of balance. It is as if you are a conductor of an orchestra and there is a note out of tune which demands your attention and input to be resolved.

In Astrology when two planets are Square to each other in the sky , so they are also in tension in the psyche of the person born under this combination. This is an area in their life that they need to work on and try and find harmony in. There is often conflict around the energies expressed by these two planets. Things do not run smoothly in these areas and there are always issues that need dealing with. Externally these may manifest as tensions and disharmony with people and events, yet they are just an expression of the underlying tension in the person. If we take an example of The Moon being Square to Mercury. Astrology states that the two forces exemplified by these planets will also exist inside the individual but as it's a Square they will be in tension with each other. The force of emotions and neediness and comfort, the Moon, will be at odds with the ability to communicate and express knowledge, Mercury. This person may not be able to easily express his emotional needs.

The Tension of the Square is further emphasised by the fact that when planets are three signs apart, they are sitting in signs of completely different elements. For example one planet could be in a Fire Sign and one in a Water Sign. Naturally these two elements do not mix, yet the two planets are some how connected and need to be reconciled.

Squares are what drive people forward. Somehow they need to be resolved or at least accepted. People with many Squares in their chart have an underlying tension and drive. They may not always be comfortable to be around because of the underlying conflicts in their psyches but they are often great agents for change. In their efforts to change themselves and find harmony they often ending up changing the world around them. Many of the people who achieve most in life are challenged with these squares but they inspire them to great heights. Like inner demons , the person cannot rest until they are dealt with. Ideally a chart is a balance of Squares and Trines. The abilities of the Trines can be used in an effort to achieve harmony with the Squares.

They're actually very beneficial if channeled correctly. Some of the most successful people have squares and oppositions. They build character. They are what drive you to be a force to be reckoned with unless you give up.

Trines and other easy aspects are good, but they make a lot of people lazy and they may take things like opportunities and talents for granted if they aren't careful not to do so.

You have to make the most of your negative aspects.

DayDreamer -

Thank you for zooming in on this. I've been saying, I wish there was more on the positive side of so-called challenging Aspects, especially when it comes to Saturn. It seems as if when it comes to this Planet, the rules we think of with Aspects get really scrambled.

There's been some good posts though, and this one is helpful.

I view so-called challenging aspects as the need to put more effort into maximizing potential. They are not necessarily bad. They are like weights that help us build muscle....weights have to do with resistance....hard aspects have to do with resistance to...they help us buid strength of character that help us overcome obstacles.

That's why t-squares are common in very successful people.

according to HOROSCOPE SYMBOLS

The Hard aspects are:
events or changes at a definite point in time, with a clearly defined crisis demanding action, after which they pass away. Unstable energy patterns, they produce difficulty when the person or the environment resists the changes which they demand, but they are the only real means for creative change. Found prominent in the horoscopes of people who are very successful and talented,or very unsuccessful and unproductive.

Opposition(180 degrees)
analagous to the 7th house: polarity, strife, conflict, but also partnership, cooperation, and consciousness. Conflicts develop when unrecognized parts of the self are projected; energy and growth in consciousness result when the projected parts are recognized and integrated.

the opposition corresponds with Libra(180 degrees)which is 180 degrees of 360 degree. 1/2 of a circle.

Square(90 degrees)
Energies working at cross-purposes,so that the achievement of one goal interferes with progress toward the other; a test of the validity of these goals. The mutual resistance of the two energies results in greater individuality; the resistance of material reality. The energies involved, and the relationship between them, are usually difficult to perceive clearly. the instability of the square leads to ongoing growth to new levels except when, because of the person's resistance, the conflict is repeated continually on the same level.

the waxing square(90 degrees) corresponds with 0 degree Cancer which is 90 of 360 degrees. 1/4 of a circle

the waning square(270 degrees)corresponds with 0 degree Capricorn which is 270 of 360 degrees. 3/4 of a circle

Semisquare(45 degrees)and sesquiquadrate(135 degrees) is similar to the square but not as intense. An unstable, dynamic linking of energies resulting in change. Incongruity and mutual resistance of two sets of goals challenges their validity.

the waxing semisquare(45 degrees)corresponds with 16 degrees Taurus which is 45 of 360 degrees. 1/8 of a circle

the waning semisquare(315 degrees)corresponds with 16 degrees Aquarius which is 315 of 360 degrees. 7/8 of a circle

the waxing sesquiquadrate(135 degrees)corresponds with 16 degrees Leo which is 145 of 360 degrees. 3/8 of a circle

the waning sesquiquadrate(225 degrees)corresponds with 16 degrees Scorpio which is 225 of 360 degrees. 5/8 of a circle

If you use a 90 degree dial which is actually pretty much a 4th harmonic chart. oppositions and squares appear as conjunctions. semisquares and sesquiquadrates as oppositions.

As you see that aspects, degrees in the zodiac, and divisions of circle are connected.

You can view squares, oppositions, semisquares, and sesquiquadrates in a harmonic way.

2nd Harmonic
An opposition occurs when two planets are in opposite parts of the zodiac. An opposition is measured from plus or minus one hundred and eighty degrees which is on half of a circle. When planets are opposed there's a balancing act and a push-pull process which can be complementary or antagonistic. Energy may be projected on to people or situations. Certainly there's a need to evaluate and reflect. Controversy and contradiction are possible. There may be a choice to fight or leave. Perhaps it's a game of give and take. To avoid struggle and stalemate, compromise may be necessary. An opposition can signal time to change sides or reclaim power. An opposition resonates with Earth, Fixed and Taurus energy.

4th Harmonic
A square usually occurs when two planets are the same triplicity of the zodiac. A square is measured from plus or minus ninety degrees which in one quarter of a circle. When planets are square you can bet that there's creative tension that requires extra work. Planets that square each other can be openly divisive, work against and inhibit each other. The energy is restless and busy. When it does assert itself in a positive way it is some of the most productive force going. Meanwhile, there can be tension, inertia and blockages. A square resonates with the Moon, Cardinal, Water and Cancer energy.

8th Harmonic
The octile family of aspects include semi-squares and sesqui-quadrartes. A semi- square is measured from plus or minus forty-five degrees. A sesqui-quadrate is measured from plus or minus one hundred and thirty five degrees. The semi-square and sesqui-quadrate represent one eighth and five eighths of a circle respectively. Two eights is a quarter or square. Four eights is an opposition. These aspects are related. To some extent, key words for the opposition and more so the square can also be applied to the semi-square and the sesqui-quadrate. These aspects can be harsh and react sharply and abruptly. They can indicate a need to act for the future. Resistance is likely. There's a need to keep cool, act cautiously and make the best of things. It's time to resolve rather than ignore problems. Octiles resonate with Pluto, Fixed, Water and Scorpio energy.
