Astrology?

Does anyone ever think about why and how all of this actually works??

And whether sometimes we allow it to be self-fulfilling?

Personally I think it offers us insights, but do you ever think there are times we might interpret something and then talk ourselves into it... Any thoughts?

maybe we should use it only as a tool to understanding certain behaviours of people, i have to say that it has helped me alot to moderate the extreme nature of my scorpio sun.
Before i knew about the natal charts i used to believe that the sun sign it's the most important and i used to be more inclined to extreme situations and behaviours.
But as soon an i learnt that there is more to astrology than the sun sign i started to see both sides of myself and i became more balanced.Therefor i do believe that astrology is about dicovering who you really are.
The negative side of it is if you overdo it adn start believing in it to the point of taking no action before you consult your charts.

Yeah... I mean of course there's truth to it or I wouldn't be on this site, but I've had someone say to me - oh, Scorpio moon, you must be jealous and controlling. At that point I knew that was a part of my personality but I had worked very hard to deal with it and control it up until then. But then this person constantly brought it up to me and what happened, I started to live it out. Power of suggestion and being pushed to it, I think...

Aside from that, it's obviously not ALL the power of suggestion though.

I somewhat agree. I use astrology as a tool to help me understand myself and my loved one's better. Knowing my birth chart makes me feel more balanced and ready to face any challenges, knowing what my strengths are. It also helps me work on my weaknesses. However, I am reluctant to learn fully about astrology, because I don't want to go overboard and relate it to every little thing in my life. I hardly ever consult my horoscope- the last time I remember was on my birthday. I'm not interested in predictive astrology. I don't want to know what will happen tommorow because then I'll be more inclined to orchastrate situations that match the predictions just to prove to myself that it's right. I'm much more interested in finding out about the funny little quirks and patterns that belong to each unique person. If I come across something in myself or another person that doesn't match up with our birth information, then I will write it off as either outside influences, or as something astrology can't touch because of strong, free will. As much as I obsess over it sometimes, I try not to let it take over my life!

Interesting disscussion, this!

Hmmm interesting....

We know that the movements of the sun and moon govern the motions of the tides, and hence, should they not also govern the flow and ebb of human emotion and thought? After all, the human body does consist of primarily of water (65-90% depending on the cell type).

Likewise, could the motions and orbits of the other planets of our solar system similarly have a subtle effect on our biochemical makeup thereby influencing personality??

People, I'm not expert in astrology, I'm just throwing out a half baked thought for your consideration. Hope you find
interesting

That reminded me of the situation when I heard from someone that she "lost all her faith in Tarot". Turned out this gal was doing a 5 cards reading for herself EVERY day.

Everything is good in moderation and I think that many of us here are guilty to some degree of making a little bit too much out of astrological influences. Some people here have a great astrological knowledge and their insight is truly amazing. But, honestly, I don't even want to know about septiles, quintiles or noviles in my natal chart let alone the synastry...lol. It's kind of like professional psychological analysis. For some, it may be a lifesaver but most people manage to live normal life without ever going that deep. There is always going to be something "good" and something "bad", something that you want to hear and something that you don't. It's very easy at this point to take the path of keeping looking for positive answers instead of doing something about negative ones. At the end, it's confusing and discouraging.... but being honest with yourself you will have to admit that basically it is the reluctance to take responcibilty for your own life not false astrological predictions that make you miserable.

Insightful post, Kamilla!

For me I prefer to stick to the basics in a chart. I love exploring new charts, and testing my understanding of astrology by discussing a person's chart with them. I find synastry to be difficult, I prefer to just stick to looking at my chart and another person's chart, and usually I can tell if it will work or not.. I know what works and what doesn't without looking at synastry.

I was a little crazily obsessed with astrology for a few months, but I've calmed down now.. I just giggle to myself at how accurate it can be at times. And I still use astrological phrases in my every day life.. "yeah well he's a Leo, obviously he did it that way" and people look at me oddly.
Whatever! haha

Astrology is a great hobby, and it has done lots for my personal growth and self-understanding.

Very good question, GeminiLover....

I'm from a strong religious background. Very rigid, holiness, Apostolic background. AND.... I am the consummate skeptic. So, it was very difficult for me to use astrology as a tool to learn myself. However, personally I can't deny that somehow the stars and the day I was born makes me who I am. And then, from everything I've learned about God, it makes sense! BUT, I think humans have a way of taking what God intended too far. That's what I believe about religion and the institution of church. The prediction stuff, well, I don't get into that. I that's where my skepticism comes back. And I think if I were to get into that, I would feel a great SPIRITUAL imbalance. And believe me, I've tested it. And none of the prediction stuff was ever right. Especially the depression stuff. I will never be depressed. My soul loves life, the good the bad and ugly of it, and I ALWAYS see the light at the end of the tunnel. I think astrology is clear. It's a good way of learning ourselves and others. But I always consider the socialization process.

One more thing. For so long I baffled everyone who knew me. Because it's simply not considered female to "enjoy sex" for the pleasure of it, ONLY. And I can. And I don't revel in it because it's a lonely existence. Not only that but the guy I'm engaging with, well, he's human too! I've broken a lot of hearts in my lifetime. And I always worried about the reaping of what I sowed. But, I don't know, when I learned that I have a lot of Venus influencing me, especially in the 5th house. I learned about all the pleasure, sensual pleasure, I seek. How, I can fabricate love just for the moment and enjoy all the benefits of feeling that. I was like, oh my gosh that's me! Then, I realized that, that same factor about me has not helped me. How can it! It's not real? And in the end I seek real love. SO, now I know to work on it. What it is exactly. And to change it. And I feel more empowered.

But the buck stops there. The prediction stuff, my soul says, NO to that!

Yes, I know what you all mean about predictive astrology! I find it interesting, but at the same time I feel like it can make you stop living your life because instead of experiencing it, all you are doing is predicting how it *might* be. I know sometimes I've interpreted a transit to mean one thing, when in reality it turned out to be something else altogether. The same forces were in motion but their effect was something different than I expected.

In some ways looking at your transits can be reassuring. Like in the past year or so, I haven't had a solid home base and it's stressed me out. I've moved four times, don't enjoy my current home and I've started getting into house-sitting and going away for holidays quite a bit. It's frustrated me that no matter what I do, fate doesn't seem to want me to have the home that I really desire at this time... so I found what's going on in my chart, and yeah, Uranus has been transiting my fourth house. So my home life has been unpredictable and changeable. In a way it reassures me to know that Uranus is the cause of it, and it's a transit that will be over soon. But I also agree that getting too much into astrology takes away your self-responsibility sometimes...

Like, my boyfriend for example. Ever since I've known him, I feel as though he's used his natal chart as an excuse for certain behaviours, or as a fatalistic 'it's just the way I am' type of thing. Like his 12th house moon. Well yeah you have a 12th house moon and it's causing a problem... but to me, the challenge of the 12th house is to dig deep and solve that problem! But no, it's like he stops at the fatalism and doesn't take responsibility to solve the problem... You know?

Yeah I have little respect for people who blame astrology for their problems. Jokingly, sure, but if you've decided not to try to improve or make an effort in your life and think that's fine because it's 'just the way you are' then that is ridiculously childish.

It's important that the value of astrology is placed below the value of experience. Your experience. We are all capable of making the 'right' (I use the word not as a right or wrong judgment, but more as what's good for your soul at the time) choices in our lives, if we only listen to ourselves. Astrology won't save you or ruin you. You will.

I believe that Astrology works because of synchronicity which is a concept that Carl Jung strongly believed in. I believe that everything in existence is connected. I believe that we all part of a greater whole. Synchronicity is pretty much paralleled events or meaningful coincidences. Some say that coincidences is just God's of Universe's Way of remaining anonymous. I don't believe in cause and effect in Astrology, and so I don't believe that the heavenly body alignments cause anything to happen. I believe they just reflect what's going on in earthly life. What goes on above, goes on below.

People make arguments that Astrology takes away from free will because it takes away responsibility for our lives. I don't see any valid arguments. People believe in DNA,genes, chromosomes, and cells and that they believe that they determine our personalities. They don't argue that they take away from our free will. There are genes, chromosomes that determine certain biological anomalities which turn into psychic complexes. Like DRD4 7R gene is a novelty seeking gene connected to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Chromosomes 1 and 6 abnormalities have been connected to Dyslexia. There are planetary placements and aspects that can indicate psychic complexes like especially hard, challenging aspects. There are astrologers that believe certain midpoint configurations like Moon,Saturn,Neptune t-square is a big astrological indicator for depression. I have that configuration, and I have long history of depression. It runs in my family. I actually believe that Astrology doesn't take away from the importance of DNA,genes, and chromosomes. I actually believe that the heavenly body alignments are in synchronicity with our DNA,genes, chromsomes, cells. I believe that the natal chart is our celestial DNA make up which is consists of infinite heavenly bodies in our solar system with numerous placements and aspects as well as harmonic aspects.

I believe that transits are in synchronicity with chemical biological changes that occur when our biochemical make up is influenced by atmospheric changes that our unique biological make ups. It is like all of us are radios and we have unique transmitters and receivers. We both send and receive like transceivors. We have to adjust our volume whether we have to increase or decrease. We can alter our brainwave patterns like we can alter frequencies on a radio.

As far as synastry goes. I believe that it's about chemistry. I see it as biological interaction. We are all born with certain biochemical makeups that are reflected in our charts. I feel that when we are with another person, their biochemical make up subtly influences our biochemical make up. It's like they are subtly transmitting and receiving with each other even when there is no verbal communication...we are naturally responsive to external stimuli, but our sensitivities vary and the way their expressions are vary. Some believe that they get feel sick from being around certain people, and well I believe that certain people's unique biochemical make up can really temporarily alter that person's biochemical makeup like a virus invading a person's body. I believe that we have cells that act like viruses which are not harmful but can permanently influence a person's biological makeup. Just think of computer viruses affecting a computer's hard drive. You can't tell when a virus is affecting your computer because it's so very subtle. A virus can lead to replications of computer data. I feel that is how people can affect us. We are like living computers that process data including imput and output. Our immune system is in a way like an antivirus program. We are designed to fight off foreign antibodies. Well..as human beings,we have a complexity of cells that tend to overload each other....so it's like our immune systems can malfunction in a way that people's virus-like cells can go inside our bodies and influence our biochemical makeup. The fact is that we can easily influence our nervous systems by providing each other stimuli no matter how subtle it is. We both breathe the same air on earth but vary in how we inhale and exhale according to our unique biochemical makeup. It's true that unhealthy atmosphere can cause us to have problems that influence not only our physical bodies but also our mental faculties. I likened people that are bad for us as that unhealthy atmosphere. Also cancer destroys cells in our body. People that are bad for us can be like cancer which doesn't destroy our cells in our body but acts like a cancer that eatens away at our bodies that we can feel uneasy knowing them. Once we get the person out of our lives, the cancer is in remission. When we are in contact with them again, the cancer comes back because that cancer never went away because it in our cell memory and the bad person just brings the cancer back to the surface.

Those are some of my beliefs about Astrology and synchronicity with biochemicals in our body.

You know, I have been able to match really bad times in my life to transits that corresponded chronologically (sp?) to them. These were times before I knew anything about astrology. So yes, I do think there is truth to predictive astrology. But, I also agree that with awareness, we can take measures to "prepare" for these "bad" transits-meaning they don't always have to be bad. So no, I don't think the transits rule our lives. Like for instance, right now saturn has hit my eighth house of "other people's money". I haven't had a problem in this area so far. And you know why? Because I have a job and don't always have to depend on people. Well atleast not for the mundane things.

My chart has also made me more aware of my faults which is why I try to curb them. But the one thing I still have a problem with is moodiness (cancer with 8th house moon). I don't think I can change the fact that I'm moody, but now I know better than to take the moods out on other people around me. Its still a working progress.

I like what Paramahansa Yogananda had to say:

quote:
It is not a question of belief; the scientific attitude one should take on any subject is whether it is true. The law of gravitation worked as efficiently before Newton as after him. The cosmos would be fairly chaotic if its laws could not operate without the sanction of human belief.

Charlatans have brought the ancient stellar science to its present dispute. Astrology is too vast, both mathematically and philosophically, to be rightly grasped except by men of profound understanding. If ignoramuses misread the heavens, and see there a scrawl instead of a script, that is to be expected in the imperfect world. One should not dismiss the wisdom with the 'wise.'

All parts of creation are linked together and interchange their influences. The balanced rhythm of the universe is rooted in reciprocity. Man, in his human aspect, has to comabt two sets of forces - first, the tumults within his being, caused by the admixture of earth, water, fire, air, and ethereal elements; second, the outer disintegrating powers of nature. So long as man struggles with his mortality, he is affected by the myriad mutations of heaven and earth.

Astrology is the study of man's response to planetary stimuli. The stars have no conscious benevolence or animosity; they merely send forth positive and negative radiations. Of themselves, these do not help or harm humanity, but offer a lawful channel for the outward operation of cause-effect equilibriums that each man has set into motion in the past.

A child is born on that day at that hour when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony with his individual karma. His horoscope is a challenging portrait, revealing his unalterable past and its probable future results. But the natal chart can be rightly interpreted only by men of intuitive wisdom: these are few.[my own opinion is that this has changed in this day and age as there are a lot more than a few ]

The message boldly blazoned across the heavens at the moment of birth is not meant to emphasize fate - the result of past good and evil - but to arouse man's will to escape from his universal thralldom. What he has done, he can undo. None other than himself was the instigator of the causes of whatever effects are now prevalent in his life. He can overcome any limitation, because he created it by his own actions in the first place, and because he possesses spriritual resources that are not subject to planetary pressure.

Superstitious awe of astrology makes one an automation, slavishly dependent on mechanical guidance. The wise man defeats his planets - which is to say, his past - by transferring his allegiance from the creation to the Creator. The more he realizes his unity with Spirit, the less he can be dominated by matter. The soul is ever free; it is deathless because it is birhtless. It cannot be regimented by stars.

Man is a soul, and has a body. When he properly places his sense of identity, he leaves behind all compulsive patterns. So long as he remains confused in his ordinary state of spiritual amnesia, he will know the subtle fetters of environmental law.

`Who are you?' said the Caterpillar. This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, `I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'

Saturn in 8th is also discipline in regards to those things. That's a good thing.

also..I tend to have a humanistic, psychological view of Astrology. The thing is that what we do in our lives is based on our psychological states.

I have always been a psychological astrologer. I always looked at the natal chart as a psychological blueprint. It was Carl Jung that got me interested in Astrology. I had Glenn Perry's psychological astrology text books.

Mental illness opens a can of worms.
People with schizophrenia are said to be not responsible for their own actions. There have been people that have been found not guilty due to being insane. Andrea Yates is a perfect example of that. She's the one that drowned all 5 of her kids. First, she was found guilty of the crime. Later, she was retried and found not guilty

I got into Astrology because I thought it was an outstanding method to help understand what made people tick. I didn't get into it to look into the future. I approach Astrology in a Scorpio/Pluto/8th house way. I feel that many psychological astrologers like me probably have a strong Scorpio/Pluto/8th house influence. We like to probe and dig deep into human nature. We tend to psychoanalyze ourselves and others. We tend to go through intense transformation in our lives and can be catalysts for others.

I have been leaning towards transformational astrology which entails using Astrology to understand our purpose of being here in the overall big picture and understanding our lessons that will help our souls evolve.

I think that I am transformational psychological astrologer who also focuses on events. I am also interested in medical astrology which entails using Astrology to find insights into health and medical issues. I have 4 medical astrology books. My favorite is Marcia Starck. I also have a medical Cosmobiology report program that I bought for research purposes in regards to medical and health conditions. There are so many uses of Astrology.

I mainly like Astrology as like a holistic healing art and science. I believe that we Astrologers have to be responsible because what we tell people can affect them and could even influence their actions. I don't want to give people the wrong information and they badly pay for it. I also don't want to give incomplete information which can also be bad. I want to do my best to be accurate and help them. I want them to finish with a reading with them feeling like they have gained insight into themselves. If they feel like they haven't been helped, then I feel that my Astrology reading means nothing. After all,I am doing it for them. I am not doing it for myself. This doesn't mean that I would tell them what they want to hear. I would present the information in a way that is nonjudgmental. I point out what they can do and what they can stay away from with the use of their free will. They have the free will to maximize their potential even with the challenging aspects. Challenging aspects just means more effort to maximize potential. I tend to have a humanistic way of interpreting the chart. I don't go with the Vedic approach which is very fatalistic, deterministic, and can be very rigid in interpretation. After all,Vedic Astrology is based on scriptures. I believe in Modern Western Astrology because it's about progression, innovation, and change as well as acknowledging the important of acknowledging individuality and independence as well as the need to be responsible for our actions and not blame anything on others. Actually, I don't believe that there is fault in the stars nor us. I believe that it's about the lessons that we are given to learn and how we choose to learn them as well as how well we learn them. We might fail to learn the lessons and be given more until we finally learn them. Then we can share what we learn with others. We can all teach each other and learn from each other. Intelligence doesn't have anything to do with it. People with mental retardation can be teachers in that they teach us the need to be tolerant and accepting others. They are not inferior to us. They are equal to us for they are human beings just like us. Diversity is a fact of life in society. I feel the main problem is that there is lack of acceptance and tolerance of diversity. That's why we have so much racism, prejudice, and wars on our planet when we should recognize that we are all the same for we are human beings and should unite because of that. At least,be united in spirit. I believe that Astrology is a tool that can help us see the big picture. I believe that Astrology should be used to unite and not to divide. I have never liked segregration of any kind. I love mixing it up just like my parents did. hahahaha

Here is something on psychological astrology from a book by Glenn Perry that I had.
This is what is my beliefs, approach to Astrology. This is what conditioned me to be a psychological astrologer that uses Astrology to understand the human psyche.

it works because the universe makes sense + the same rules and laws function everywhere in the universe ("as above so below").
but
we know it works or not according to our ability to interpret the signs correctly. between the aspects in the sky and our understanding of them there is a space - filled with *language*, *symbols*, *meanings*.

we don't know for sure that... X means Y. it's a guess/interpretation/statistic/etc. so many writers of astrology - they use so many different words to say the 'same' thing... why?

I believe that Astrology's accuracy depends on the Astrologer intepreting the chart.

I definitely see Astrology as a language

Planets as characters in a play
Signs as the costumes
Houses as the stages
Aspects as the dialogue between the characters

Astrology is like a combination of language, psychology, philosophy, alchemy.

It really is an occult, metaphysical science. Occult, metaphysical is hard for many people to fathom. It's only for the deep, penetrating thinkers.

I agree with Glaucus:
quote:

Planetary movements affect us, whether it’s because we are made up of water and stardust and invididual sparks of the Greater Divine, I do not know. Scientists have postulated the Theory of Quantum Nonlocality – I think this possibly is what makes Astrology “work” –

Superstring theory and other esoteric advances in physics….are revealing that our reality is embedded in a much more expansive, higher-dimensional realm of pure energy – or pure spirit….
The discovery of quantum nonlocality – the ability of particles to exert subtle influences on each other instantaneously across vast distances – is confirming the ancient mystical teaching that all things are profoundly interconnected. Quantum nonlocality might also explain extrasensory perception…. As well as the miraculous healing that results from prayer and other spiritual practices.
-- From “Rational Mysticism” by John Horgan

Great quote from Yogananda, Hexxie!!

Transits work – they do affect us totally (I will trade you my tPluto sq nMoon for ANYTHING you’ve got going!!!! ) – but I also believe that the severity of transit effects depends on whether you’ve done your homework in your classes at SchoolRoom Earth, and also on what you brought with you from the past, karma-wise. I don’t look at transits daily, although it’s of passing interest to note where the Moon is (especially for Cancer-influenced friends), and I don’t live my life according to whether Merc is rx or not. But forewarned is forearmed. If you know what influences MIGHT be going on around you, you can flow smoothly through your day, rather than crashing into walls or other vehicles

I think it's important to practice being objective, rather than allowing astrology to color your views. THAT in itself is a exercise! We are human, afterall, and we cannot be expected to be objective 100% of the time. It's vital that we ARE subjective to an extent. So that's why I always try to emphasize that one try things out and make personal observations.

For example, ever try to work astrology backwards? Instead of telling someone what their Ascendant is, let them read a list of brief interpretations for each and let THEM pick which is closest to describing themselves. Just be sure they are describing their true self, rather than wishful thinking.

But the point being, you can study astrology all your life, and you must still be able to recognize and confront your own personal bias every time. It's an ongoing process.

Usually when people start out with astrology, they go through an extensive phase of frustration with not being able to handle the "insights", so that knowing someone's Sign right contributes to the very bias they are attempting to surpass. Sometimes the "power" can create too much static in the atmosphere, so you don't see things as a result of a "natural" progression. But this is why we should always include the human element. Astrology is a beautiful art which can enhance our understanding with one another.
