She has her Venus focused in the 1rst house (being, also action), indicating she may like to "conquer" in relationships. She has no planets focused in the 7th house, indicating she tends not to have relationships for the sake of having relationships.

He also has Libra modifying Uranus and Pluto. He has Venus focused in the 5th house (self-expression, also dating), indicating he may like to have "dating relationships". He has Uranus close to the 7th house, further emphasizing "friendly relationships".

Looking at the synastry, there are challenging aspects between the Sun and Moon, so there is a "challenging" connection between these two. Almost all the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars) are challenged, indicating many personal challenges between the two. His Saturn (duty, also authority) conjuncts (energy is combined with) her South node (the past), indicating he may hold her back by becoming her "authority" and not letting her make her own decisions.

though both have aspects of friendly
relationships still the relationship challenged?

In the compostive venus in 9th house is conjunct sun and mercury and venus square mars should mean a good relationship.
I agree that the challenge is the saturn aspects which has no good news with it.
Is this aspect completely over shadowing the relationship?

Also, his mercury is retro in house 6. Does that mean trouble in communication in the relationship also?

There are a LOT of squares in the synastry, indicating personal challenges between the people. I don't believe in "good" or "bad" aspects in charts of relationships (or charts in general): relationships are what you make of them. The charts simply show you what you have to work with.
