Astro.com now lists Eris
in its "additional objects" column,
so I was wondering what people know
about this new object (asteroid?).

It's Inconjunct my Sun
(2 minutes from exact!).

Okay, its listed as a "dwarf planet";
the largest known dwarf planet in our solar system.

Eris was the Greek Goddess of Discord, Strife, or Chaos.
(In Latin, she is Discordia.)

Hmm....

In Hesiod's Works and Days 11–24, two different goddesses named Eris 'Strife' are distinguished:

"So, after all, there was not one kind of Strife alone, but all over the earth there are two. As for the one, a man would praise her when he came to understand her; but the other is blameworthy: and they are wholly different in nature.
For one fosters evil war and battle, being cruel: her no man loves; but perforce, through the will of the deathless gods, men pay harsh Strife her honour due.
But the other is the elder daughter of dark Night (Nyx), and the son of Cronus who sits above and dwells in the aether, set her in the roots of the earth: and she is far kinder to men. She stirs up even the shiftless to toil; for a man grows eager to work when he considers his neighbour, a rich man who hastens to plough and plant and put his house in good order; and neighbour vies with his neighbour as he hurries after wealth. This Strife is wholesome for men. And potter is angry with potter, and craftsman with craftsman, and beggar is jealous of beggar, and minstrel of minstrel."

Objects that are not planets are considered minor planets. These include asteroids, centaurs, damocloids, kuiper belt objects.

asteroids are referred to the main belt...bodies that orbit between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is the largest of all the asteroids, and it is a categorized as a dwarf planet.

Kuiper belt objects are bodies that orbit beyond Neptune. Eris is the largest of all the Kuiper belt object,of all dwarf Planets, and of all minor planets.

Pluto is categorized as a Kuiper belt object,a dwarf planet, and minor planet. If you check the minor planet list, you will see that Pluto has been assigned a minor planet number.

I do consider Pluto as a planet, but I also feel that Eris should be considered as a planet too. It is larger than Pluto. I also feel that Ceres should be considered a planet in Astrology too. It was categorized as a planet for 50 years until it was demoted because of the major asteroid belt. All this was before Pluto was even discovered. That's the same with Pluto. Pluto was categorized as a planet for 70 years until it was demoted because of the Kuiper belt.

We still have the 3rd and 4th largest dwarf planets, FY9 and EL61 unnamed yet. They come close to being Pluto's size. EL61's width is the same as Pluto's. EL61 is a weird looking one for it has the shape of a football and it spins very fast. It looks like a football that has been kicked. I have that sucker only 3 minutes square my Midheaven.

A lot of progression in Astronomy and Astrology.

My own Eris placement aspects are

Eris in Aries in 8th
Eris sextile Midheaven - 1'01 orb
Mercury biquintile Eris - '06 orb

This all speculation.
we won't know for sure until after a lot of research over the years.

This is from Phil Sedgwick's site http://www.philipsedgwick.com/

Some preliminary keywords for Eris follow:

Positive - liberation from addictions to success or status, clear priorities regarding matters of love and money, finally getting you can't take it with you and applying full resourcefulness in life, recognition of the potency of one's energy and life force, clear sense of the sacred marriages: spirit to body, self to Creator, between soulful companions, personal sense of emergence.

Negative - greed, workaholism, believe that you must take over for God, general sense of being forsaken, condemned or abandoned, lack of spiritual regard for life, superficial, status oriented.

Mundane: promises and vows (both kept and broken), elections and election fraud, intervention by higher powers (troubleshooters, authorities, deity or God), using chaos and disruption as a method of reorganization - i.e., dumping a closet onto the floor, then reorganizing, things that overturn, the scales of justice

Ceremonial: capitulation ceremonies, vows to create order from chaos, intent to right wrongdoing, abundance ceremonies

keywords for Eris by Roy MacKinnon

Striving to achieve one's goals and refusing to capitulate to the pressure of unjust treatment and discord from abusive authority : with great inner conviction and single-mindedness of purpose following a path of high attainment and enlightenment notwithstanding adversity - alternatively refusing the call to transform with mediocrity and underachievement as consequences: issues around power abuse of minorities, the defenceless, the alien: networks, multinational countries and companies, the world-wide web: piracy, terrorism, clash of ideologies: conflict between desires of personality and pursuit of the inner call: persecution of the spiritually aware person who stands alone courageously acting according to conscience: an outstanding individual ahead of the times."

Awesome, thanks!

I can relate to the lack of spiritual regard for life.
I often wonder if life
(that is, existence in the physical world)
is just a wrong turn,
and if all our transmutation of matter into spirit is not,
in fact,
a lot of unnecessary busy-work,
which might just as easily be accomplished
with a swift shotgun blast to the cerebellum.

Hmmm.....

Here is my take on Eris:

I want to take into account the astronomical properties too. For instance, Eris orbits beyond Pluto which is an outer planet. Outer planets related to metaphysical stuff. Therefore Eris being the most outer object in our solar system, it can definitely relate to the metaphysical. I believe that all the objects relate to the metaphysical. I believe that the objects that orbit like Pluto have similar astrological characteristics as Pluto. I believe that the objects that orbit beyond Pluto have astrological characteristics like rebirth, resurrection. I believe that all the kuiper belt objects including Pluto have to do with the subterraneans depths of the psyche. I kinda see Pluto like the psychiatrist who is in control of the mind. I kinda see Pluto's demotion and the equality of kuiper belt objects as the psyche having feel reign to explore the unconscious with the psychiatrist having control over the mind. I believe it has to do with the need to embrace spiritual, religious diversity. I feel that lack of respect, regard for other's spiritual/religious beliefs is a huge problem. We see this with President Bush and Alquaeda, and religious extremists, terrorism. I suspect that these KBO's are related to ideological issues as well as equal, human, civil rights issues.
This can be stuff like gay rights too. This could be stuff like women's rights. Who knows...maybe the election of the first woman of the United States will correspond with discoveries of other kuiper belt objects that can be larger than Eris. Astronomers suspect that there are many Pluto-sized objects in the Kuiper belt and they even suspect Mars-sized objects are located there. Only time will tell.

I don't think Eris is exactly bad. I feel all heavenly bodies have both positive and negative influence. It just depends on from what angle you view it. I think Eris can be good. I just think it has to do with stirring stuff up. This can be activism, pointing out what's wrong in the world, civil rights fights....making trouble and challenging the norms of society to try get society make changes that can benefit humankind. Civil War in USA is an example. It led to freedom of all black slaves in USA. John Brown caused a lot of trouble for the south with his violence in behalf of slaves. Southerners saw him as a terrorist, but slaves and northerners viewed him as a hero.

I think that I use my Eris when I point out the misdiagnoses and racism that goes on in psychiatry and my raising awareness of things like Dyslexia,Dyspraxia,AD/HD,and other neurodivergent conditions that are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. People who strongly believe in psychiatry and that AD/HD is a disorder that needs to be medicated will see me as a troublemaker.

Jesus was seen as a trouble maker by Jewish religious leaders and Romans, and he was seen as savior by many others.

I do believe that Eris has to do with terrorism and controversy which both can be chaotic and disordered.

are you serious, goddess of discord, strife, and chaos, well i guess it doesn't help that I have her in Aries in my 8th house, (noting mars conjunct my MC in 10th).

What could that aries/eris/8th combo mean?

it moves slowly
lots of people have it in aries
the 8rh is a little significant,
i would think,
but if it isnt making close aspects
then it is probably a minor influence.

house placement is always personal influence....no matter what object is in that house

house placement is very personal compared to sign placement because it's time/location sensitive.

house placement is based on time/location.

if the time/location are different, you get different houses.

Eris in Aries in 8th house can be very significant, and can be strong emphasis on transformation, sex, and occult...but can be chaotic, disordered in those things which could lead to transformation good or bad.

I definitely believe mine is probably good for occult, transformation, and psychology stuff....how I stir stuff in regards to psychology in the areas of neurodivergent issues....especially with Eris biquintile my Scorpio Mercury in 3rd

Eris conjunct Sun in 9th could indicate stirring stuff up in regards to religion, philosophy, education. There can be an ability to express yourself in a controversial manner that can actually teach others.

It can be like teaching theory of evolution in a catholic school. hehehehehehe

I have Eris conjunct Mercury in the 6th. Given how many planets that sets off in my chart, it scares me.

Incidentally, The Know-It-All Astrologer that hosts the astrology carnival is having an Eris theme for the upcoming month: http://theknowitallastrologer.blogspot.com/2006/11/astrology-carnival-seventh-edition.html
