The following has been reproduced from extracts in "The Astrologer's Handbook" by Frances Sakoian and Louis S Acker:

Sun Sign Potentials

Page 44

Libra
September 23-October 22

Cardinal, Air
Ruler: Venus

Key Words: harmony, companionship, balance

Libras are ruled by the planet Venus, which gives them charm and grace in expression, combined with a desire for popularity and the approval of others. The highly evolved natives of this sign will never compromise principle in order to gain approbation, because experience has taught them that ultimate humiliation is the result of such expediency.

Because Libra is a cardinal sign, Libras are concerned with the present and will initiate activities. But they usually seek the cooperation of others rather than continuing alone.

Libras have a special need for companionship in order to be fulfilled. However, they need to maintain their own individuality within the framework of their relationships. Marriage and partnerships are a primary concern of Libras.

Typical activities involve social relations and contact with the public. They can include the legal profession, public relations, art, the performing arts, music, and partnerships that require close cooperation.

Libras have a strong sense of justice and fair play arising from Saturn's exaltation in this sign. Thus they demand that their partners work as hard as they do. Contrary to what has often been said by astrologers, Libras are anything but lazy, because of this Saturn influence. The more highly evolved the individual, the more likely he is to be hard-working, especially after his 29th year (on account of the 29-year-cycle of Saturn and Saturn's exaltation in Libra).

Since Libra is an air sign, those born under it are intellectual and actively see knowledge, new ideas, and mental stimulation. They are especially adept at analyzing what is occurring in the society around them. All matters pertaining to psychology and human relationships are of deep interest to them. For this reason they make good counselors and often seek to help people with their personal problems. They frequently play the role of peacemaker. The key phrase for Libra is "I balance."

These Venus-ruled natives rarely express anger, but when they do it is as though a tornado has gone through a room- they leave nothing unsaid.

They will tell you exactly what you said fifty years before and under what circumstances you said it. Yet, like the tornado their anger soon spends itself, leaving them shaken and ill.

Mars in Libra

Mars in the sign Libra gives a strong urge to action in a social content. Mars is in its detriment here because Libra is the opposite sign to Aries, which Mars rules; therefore the direct action of Mars is somewhat limited by the need for the approval and cooperation of others.

Because Libra is a cardinal sign dealing with partnerships and relations with the public, people with this Mars position are the initiators of social activity. They want to be noticed and appreciated, and they like to act in partnership with others. There is a desire for marriage and for the emotional gratification it can provide; these people seek aggressive, energetic partners. There is a tendency for them to confuse their own desires and ambitions with those of others.

Libra lends grace and refinement to the aggressive and selfish tendencies of Mars; because of such toning down, it is not an altogether unfavorable position. Of all the planets, Mars most needs softening and modification by other attributes, and in this sign it is given social grace by Venus and discipline and prudence by Saturn. People with this position can become very angry, however, when priciples of justive are violated, even when they themselves are not victims. Their concern with moral principle stems from the realization that unfairness reveals a moral weakness of the part of the perpetrator that coulds also be tuned on them.

If Mars is afflicted in Libra, there is a tendency to strictness concerning the rules of social conduct; natives can have the attitude that the game should by played according to established rules. If Mars is heavily afflicted, there can be difficulties in partnerships arising from arguments and conflicts of will.

Mercury in Libra

Mercury in the sign Libra indicates a mind that is primarily concerned with human relations and psychology. The natives have an intense curiosity about the thinking and behavior patterns of others; they gravitate, therefore, to fields such as psychology, astrology, public relations, socialogy, and law. Good communications and happiness in relaionships are essential to them. They prefer to work in mental partnership with others, and they are usually easy to communicate with because of their interest in what others think. Their strong sense of justice generally makes them honest in their communication. The Venus rulership of Libra seeks harmony, and Saturn's exaltation in Libra seeks justice, making the Mercury Libra honest and balanced in all mental dealings. These people like to consider all sides of an issue before making a decision, but if this desire is used in the wrong way, it can lead to indecisiveness, and the opportunity to act is lost. When decisions are reached, however, they are generally just and well considered. If other factors in the horoscope are favorable, this Mercury position is good for the legal professions, and negotiating. But unless there are some planets in fixed signs or houses, there can be impatience in these matters.

People with this Mercury position seek association with those who possess refined minds, good manners, and honest reputations. Uncouth manner and unfair motivations are distasteful and are avoided whenever possible. These people are highly sensitive to the odors, personal appearance, and mannerisms of others. They regard inappropriate dress and coarse speech as social affronts. Gentle and considerate in communication, they can be stern where principles are involved. They make the mistake of expecting the same degree of mental discipline from others that they require of themselves.

Because of Saturn's exaltation in Libra the mind can be stern and hardworking. In highly developed types this quality leads to profundity, but superficial people with this Mercury position may appear to lack the firmness of their convictions because they tend to agree with their companions in order to gain popularity and acceptance.

Venus in Libra

Venus in the sign Libra indicates a type of person to whom marriage and harmonious social relationships are of extreme importance. Venus, the planet ruling Libra, is powerful and well placed here. Since Venus usually bestows well-proportioned features and general physical beauty, people with this position are attractive to the opposite sex and have many opportunities for marriage.

These people have an innate ability to understand the feelings of others. Enjoying companionship, they seek relationships in which a harmonious and close personal bond is possible. Along with their consideration for others, they have a desire to please, which results in their being well liked. Their sense of justice and fair play in romance and social relations is well developed. Because they dislike coarseness and uncouth behavior, they have hight standards for social conduct and manners. They are romantic and affectionate, but as Libra is an intellectual air sign, they seek intellectual stimulation and companionship from close personal relationships; sensuality by itself will not suffice. In this respect Venus in Libra is different from Venus in Taurus, as it is not concerned with money per se; however, natives like to be surrounded by beauty and thus usually require money. Unlike natives with Venus in Taurus, these people seek status more through their personal relationships than through possessions, but as a rule they are endowed with both because they try to establish meaningful relationships with mature individuals who have acquired wealth. Moreover, they are able to make money by their pleasing manners and aptitude in dealing with the public, which can be applied to business.

The aesthetic perceptions are highly developed with Venus in Libra. The natives often have an aptitude for some form of art, especially music. Because Libra is an aire sign and sound waves travel through the medium of air, they generally have a good sense of hearing, which is the basis of their musical ability. Venus in Taurus, by contrast, is more likely to relate to painting, sculpture, and other tactile arts.

People with this Venus placement dislike disagreements and discord. If they are exposed to them too frequently, they become nervous, upset, and often ill. Consequently they avoid situations of conflict. If Venus is afflicted, they may go along with others merely to avoid argument and unpleasantness, thus appearing to lack integrity. An afflicted Venus in Libra can lead to superficial emotional and social values and produce a conformist attitude and a lack of well-defined personal values.

Women with this Venus position want to be cared for deeply; however, in public places, social propriety and a suave approach on the part of the men with whom they are seen are important to them. There is ability in giving public performances, and these natives take the limelight gracefully. Much public acclaim and popularity can accrue to those in the performing arts.

Thanks D for Defient, you've been quite busy haven't you? What I liked best about the sun in libra composition was the following quote,
"Contrary to what has often been said by astrologers, Libras are anything but lazy, because of this Saturn influence. The more highly evolved the individual, the more likely he is to be hard-working, especially after his 29th year (on account of the 29-year-cycle of Saturn and Saturn's exaltation in Libra)." Thank you, I'm quite tired of hearing Lazy Libra. And I just got a job that I start soon, thanks to Tim pointing out that Saturn, wich is in my 10th, is now trasiting sextile my sun and uranus.
So I hope to God my luck is changing. And now that I'm 33, I feel I can take on more responsibility and crave more authorianship. Thanks,D
Melissa

Thank you very much for posting this. I have Sun and Mercury in Libra, and those descriptions were quite accurate, which is rare. I'm saving this.

mars,

Mercury is traditionally exalted in Virgo (which it also rules). Using modern rulerships, Neptune is in detriment in Virgo.

Exaltedly,

Tim

Lol! Well mine happens to be close to scorpio in charactaristics sense (Virgo Lol!)

However, I do have a personal respect for those who have Scorpio in their Sun, or as an Ascender. They have this aura and this presence that just demands respect Lol!
