Ok, I kind went overboard in responding to this, but I still think it was worth it. So, I've had this website bookmarked with the seven deadly sins and their corresponding virtues. I think the vices are the potentialities of planets in fall/detriment, while the virtues are the potentialities of the planets in exaltation. Here's the site.
Here's the breakdown:
pride/humility
*Seeing ourselves as we are and not comparing ourselves to others is humility. Pride and vanity are competitive. If someone else's pride really bothers you, you have a lot of pride.Planet in Exaltation: Venus in Pisces.
I decided on this one because Pisces energy is about dissolving the ego and boundaries. Pisces energy is also about humility, so Venus in Pisces captures that message of humility and ultimately self-love (leading to love without boundaries) quite well.
------------------------------------------------
sloth/zeal
* Zeal is the energetic response of the heart to God's commands. The other sins work together to deaden the spiritual senses so we first become slow to respond to God and then drift completely into the sleep of complacency.
Planet in exaltation: Sun in Aries
Ok, forget the details of Christian belief, and just imagine the essence of the message. We could say the Sun in Aries appropriately manifests the identity with zeal and honesty.
------------------------------------------------
envy/love
*"Love is patient, love is kind…" Love actively seeks the good of others for their sake. Envy resents the good others receive or even might receive. Envy is almost indistinguishable from pride at times.
Planet in exaltation: Moon in Taurus
The Moon, concerned with security and emotions, seemed a great conduit for envy and love. Envy here manifests as the Moon feeling inadequate and insecure, like the Moon in Capricorn keeping score of material wealth and exchanges. Taurus, in contrast, is able to provide the Moon with stability and calm so that the Moon is free to express itself without burning itself out over every possible emotional slight. Thus, it seems this is a perfect position for the Moon to feel secure enough to truly love.
------------------------------------------------
lust/self control
*Self control and self mastery prevent pleasure from killing the soul by suffocation. Legitimate pleasures are controlled in the same way an athlete's muscles are: for maximum efficiency without damage. Lust is the self-destructive drive for pleasure out of proportion to its worth. Sex, power, or image can be used well, but they tend to go out of control.
Planet in Exaltation: Mars in Capricorn
I think this one is pretty obvious after reading the description above. Mars is raw energy and can be very selfish in pursuing its desires. Capricorn slows Mars down a bit and makes it useful. Capricorn energy is all about self-control for the big pay-off.
------------------------------------------------
wrath/kindness
*Kindness means taking the tender approach, with patience and compassion. Anger is often our first reaction to the problems of others. Impatience with the faults of others is related to this.
Planet in Exaltation: Mercury in Virgo
Mercury in Virgo is said to be "curious with a purpose." Thus, Mercury here is a concerned with truth and reality. Mentioned above, kindness is compassion and patience when we encounter the faults of others. I think Mercury in Virgo is perceptive enough to see those faults, and also put them in perspective and evaluate them properly.
------------------------------------------------
gluttony/faith and temperance
*Temperance accepts the natural limits of pleasures and preserves this natural balance. This does not pertain only to food, but to entertainment and other legitimate goods, and even the company of others.
Planet in Exaltation: Saturn in Libra
Saturn of course is about limitations and responsibility, so Saturn in Libra is perfect at delineating the limits of pleasure. Mentioned above, this includes balance in relationships.
------------------------------------------------
greed/generosity
*This is about more than money. Generosity means letting others get the credit or praise. It is giving without having expectations of the other person. Greed wants to get its "fair share" or a bit more.
Planet in Exaltation: Jupiter in Cancer
I couldn't decide whether to put Jupiter in Cancer or Moon in Taurus here. My justification for Jupiter in Cancer is that Cancer energy (like the Moon) is concerned with relationships and security. Greed is a fear of lack. Jupiter in Cancer is perfect because it is able to expand to meet all of our needs. Jupiter in Cancer shows us that we are loved and protected.
[EDIT] I put in some dashes to make the divisions clearer.
