Knowflakes,

A common question is "What astrological books do you recommend?" Here are my choices: http://www.geocities.com/wilsontctc/Author_list.htm

What are your thoughts about best astrological books? (Hey, I showed you mine, now you show me yours! )

Suggesting,

Tim

I was lurking on one of your other forums, and saw something "Bob" said to you that wasn't cool. It's probably good that it's not your style to respond to such things. It's also probably good that they don't allow instant sign-up, because that didn't set well with me. (I chose not to sign up in the end. Probably best that I not enter in in anger.) I'm pretty sure I don't have as much astrological knowledge as Bob, but haven't the reproductive organs always been ruled by Scorpio?

Here are my favourites:

1) Dane Rudhyar's "Astrological Timing, Transition to the New Age".
One of the best books about the long cycles of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The only book that points out that Buddha was born in a rare conjunction of Uranus,Neptune and Pluto.

2) "Astrology for the Soul" by Jan Spiller.
The best book on Lunar Nodes.

3) "The Astrology of Inner Space"
by Carl Payne Toby.
The first book to use mathematical astrology and statistical evidence. A book that will tell us:

a) Why Scorpio is still called house of death by the astrological majority whereas the greatest mass killings of human history occured under Capricornians Stalin and Mao.

b) Why Mental illnesses are higher for sixth house dominant people whereas they are supposed to be critically analytical Virgo types.

c) Why 12th house dominant folk are workaholics and hypochondriacs instead of being mystical and dreamy.

d) Why Arabic Parts and Equal Houses work.

e) Why Mars in 19 Taurus folk are super sexual.

f) Why 4th House people are more concerned about Land than babies.

It will also tell us hundreds of more practical tips on using astrology in the right way.

I'm also a big fan of Arroyo and his books you listed. His "Four Elements" book really altered the way I looked at charts and I experienced a lot of "a-ha" moments while reading it. I also would recommend the four Steven Forrest books you have on your list. Those were also "a-ha" reads.

Others that weren't on your list but are among my faves:

1) Secrets from a Stargazer's Notebook by Debbi Kempton-Smith.

Sometimes astrology books get dry and bogged with technicality - this book keeps it fun and interesting thanks to Smith's quirky way with words. It's one of the most enjoyable reads, and at a whopping 529 pages, it's got plenty of info. I'd recommend the whole book for intermediate astrologers, but a beginner can have fun just skimming Smith's observations regarding their own chart.

2) Astologik: The Oracular Art of Astrology by Antero Alli.

Sometimes it feels like you're reading the exact same thing over-and-over (i.e. "Leo moon loves attention." and "Leo moon signifies attention-craving." and "Leo moon is a show-off." etc. etc. etc.). Alli's book is definitely off the beaten path, though. It's unique and very, very modern (see "cyber-shaman"). I'd recommend for either intermediate or advanced - not because it's technical, but because it's deep. I *highly* recommend to fans of his friend, Rob Brezny, www.freewillastrology.com.

3) Buddhist Astrology: Chart Interpretation from a Buddhist Perspective by Jhampa Shaneman and Jan Angel.

Buddhist practice applied to Western astrology. This book is fabulousness! It does focus on houses and planets being in houses, plus planetary aspects. So, if you're hanging out, wondering "Hey, what does it mean if I have Mercury in Aquarius?" this book is not for you. It doesn't lend itself to being a quick read. But if you're looking at a long weekend, or you're unemployed and searching for the meaning of life, then this is a good choice.

4) Moon Signs: The Key to Your Inner Life by Donna Cunningham.

I like this book because it's really easy, and I can hand it to visitors and it keeps them busy until I've got dinner ready. Or maybe I just like it because my Leo moon is starved for attention and it really really really likes reading about itself. Super-duper easy for a beginner astrologer.

Two other books that I think are well-written and super-duper easy are:
Astrology: A Comprehensive Guide to Classical Interpretations by Kevin Burk and How to Be a Great Astrologer by James Braha. I'd recommend them to people who have no background in astrology in the order I listed them. The first book starts out very basic, and it's based on the course for the NCGR Level 1 Astrological Certification exam, so it's kinda like a school textbook, except with Sylvester Stallone's chart and such.

AG,

I have always associated Scorpio with the sex organs so I don't know why Bob had an issue with this. However, from the way Bob was talking on that forum, maybe he was misspelling his name: instead of b-o-b it should have been g-o-d!

Thanks for your support,

Tim

I've learnt a lot from articles, really... but I do keep in mind a few books:

Donna Cunningham: Moon Signs
Robert Hand: Horoscope Symbols.
Noel Tyl: Synthesis & Counseling (Solar Arcs, too, I guess).
(a really funny one) Hazel Dixon-Cooper: Love On A Rotten Day (but read "mercury" instead of "Mars" sometimes)

I was thinking of getting the encyclopedia of psychological Astrology. I was reading about it on the web, and the astrological indicators he gave for alcoholism scarily matched my partners chart who used to be a heavy drinker. But on the site they have simplified what Carter had written in his book. So I was worried it might be overcomplicated but since it has been recommended I might purchase it.

I have some of the good books already mentioned like inner planets, and Stephen arroyo's books. I am still waiting for my 12 houses book by Howard, I had already waited 6 wks for it, and then was told I would have to wait another 6 wks for it, which is annoying. But I will look into some of the books recommended here.

Someone mentioned Jan Spiller's book, which is a favourite. Another favourite of mine is "Astrology: A Cosmic Science" by Isabel Hickey.

Shining Ray, if you get a copy of carters book, be very gentle with it. not kidding! all of the copies as i understand it weren;t printed on the most stable matter, best glue, i dont know what - so they tend to fall apart quite easily [within a few yrs of steady use if youre not careful]. FYI ~A
