Hi

I have been using Astro's "default" house system for analysing synastries and yet l find the equal house system works well too.

Sometimes though it changes the synastry significantly. Is the equal system the classic? Is it therefore the most accurate. It put significant other's venus in my 5th whereas with default it's in my 6th!
grrrrr

Which house system is better please? I know some use Koch or Placidius too.

Thanks !

I recently switched from placidus to equal and find it much more accurate. Both for transits and natal placements. The main criticism of it is its lack of association of the MC with the 10th/4th house axis. I personally do not see a problem with that. I think the MC can be fulfilled in any of the "outer" focused houses. It is a point of long term/ambition life goal. It does not have to involve career in the traditional 10th house sense though it seems to be a point of reputation, recognition and renown, etc The 10th/4th house axes could remain important as "angles" as with any other house system.

thanks for that bucketrider...

do you find the same for synastry please? I am wondering if it is more accurate with synastry or whether there is a better house system.

Why would synastry be dif than natal placements or transits? Its a more accurate house system period. It is the only house system I use now.

Its cliche to say and doesnt exactly imply veracity but Ptolemy used it and there were other options in his time as well.

i am OMGing here because i am starting to wonder if equal might be more valid based on the subtle differences in my chart!

but i'm curious.. why is the MC the same.. but, in my case, in the 11th house? confusing.

so you don't think intercepted houses have any significance?

I am just asking that's all.

My mother has Sun intercepted in Gemini in 12th.
My girlfriend has her Sun,Mercury,Mars intercepted in Aries in 1st house.

Glaucus - Im going to have to go with no. Its a cool idea but given the accuracy I have seen with the equal system, it doesnt add enough to the interpretation to replace what you get by using equal. There are other ways of coming to the same conclusions that dont involve interceptions.

Heartcakes - what differences are you noticing?

My chiron and jupiter went from the 4th to the 5th with equal. I always scratched my head in wondering what my chironic issue was with the 4th house. Never figured it out. My music career on the other hand has been profoundly chironic.

welll.. to make a long story short:

my chiron also went from 4th to 5th, along with my moon. i DID have a very troubled and painful childhood BUT the 5th describes my overall emotional attitude (VERY playful and creative, love children), and the chiron seems to still fit because i read a description that the parents basically extinguish that creative flame in you early on, which was a big part of that whole dynamic that was very painful. also moves my pluto into the 10th, another description i read making the mother a controlling and overpowering influence in your life (YUP), which would also account for the old 4th house sense of woundedness and being tied to my parents, especially mother.

my jupiter goes into 8th which seems to make sense as i am constantly thinking about death and the after life (but in a good way, haha) and have even had 2 NDEs.

my NN also moves into the 9th (from 8th) and it makes a bit more sense to me as i do tend to get way overwhelmed by informational detail to the point where i do nothing. 2nd house also fits me in that i've always had to do everything on my own and the hard way.. but not in the materialistic attachment sense. so i'm still not sure if that one is more accurate.

but overall, looks equally if not more accurate. though, i will have to think more about it!

oh and my saturn went into the 9th which actually REALLY fits with the description liz green gives in one of her books for me ("old testament" mentality in the family and the resulting confused relationship to religion and martyrdom, etc).

but here is the confusing question for me. if most people use placidus and most studies and chart interpretations are based on the actual event and behaviours, etc, in peoples' lives, then how could they be relevent if equal is more valid? is it maybe somehow possible that due to the gradual evolution of the signs there is an overlap in energies and possible outcomes, basically speaking? that could be the only explaination that would make much sense.

for example, while 9th saturn does fit me very well, 8th saturn fit too cuz i was molested as a child and and i have somewhat of a fear of intimacy, though a craving for it. in some ways i do not trust easily, unless i am very comfortable and emotionally connected. so maybe because these houses (8 and 9) seem to be about power (though different kinds, sexual/transformative and religious/dogmatic) there is something of an overlap in possible interpretations??

does that make sense? if not, how do you explain it? and could both be equally as valid? and if so, how?

I was a tried and true Placidus user myself, but I've found the differences between my Equal house system chart and Placidus system chart quite revealing...

Using Placidus, I have natal Mars in the 2nd house. Which makes sense to an extent, I do spend money as soon as I get it, I'm very protective and defensive over anything I call my own, and I value independence, fearlessness, and strength above all else.

However, when using Equal, Mars is at the very end of the 2nd house, where I would interpret it as predominately under the influence of the chatty and inquisitive 3rd house. This makes a bit more sense to me. I mentioned in another thread that I talk a mile a minute, which is true. All my life, I've had issues with talking too fast and tripping over my words. I'm terribly argumentative, with a bad habit for correcting people every chance I get, and looking for things to "debate". I have a natural tendency to drive too fast (I blame it on a heavy foot, but I know it's me), I could make a sailor blush with things that would come out of my mouth in normal conversation so I have to always watch myself, and I have a highly competitive relationship with my sister.

Placidus wise, Jupiter sits in my 3rd house...which I think is quite accurate. Not only do I talk a lot, but I have a very loud voice, and I ramble. I'm a writer, and all my pieces tend to be drawn to ethics/philosophy/religion.

However, Jupiter is in my 4th house, according to the equal house system, and I do come from a very, very large family. Unusually large, with at least 65 cousins on one side, and an uncountable amount on the other. I spent my childhood traveling a lot, we moved constantly, and have always lived quite a distance away from my other relatives. In my household, I grew up listening to political, philosophical and religious debate over dinner, not the average "how was your day, dear?".

This is also supported by my Moon moving into the 9th house, and how I consider myself a life-long student. I made it a point to myself to learn so much about so many broad topics, that I can't even decide what I want to do with my life. I'm nurtured (Moon) by expanding my mental awareness and understanding, therefore I will always seek ways to learn new things. I also have an insatiable need for travel, learning foreign languages and customs, and I am extremely emotionally invested in politics, the judicial system, ethics, philosophy (my minor ) and religion.

My 10th house becomes Virgo, which all I get from that is that in my career, I plan to work with communications and use those communications to help and better service those in need (Mercury in the 12th)

Venus moves out of my 11th, leaving the Sun and Pluto with makes much more sense because I have a bad habit of absolutely controlling my friends, to the point where I drop them entirely when I no longer "need" them. I also get so jealous of them, that I tend to surround myself with people who don't shine as brightly, because the moment I'm outshone, that "friend" gets irreparably distanced from my "circle". Venus there was hinting at harmonious relations that didn't really exist, haha, I've had rocky friendships since day one.

Venus instead moves into the 12th house, which makes more sense of my favorite hobbies and past times such as music, art, writing, meditation, chemistry (a Neptune ruled science), alcohol, etc.

Also it hints at my horrible track record of break ups and relationship upsets. I also tend to always end up "the other woman", and I have problems finding a man who fits my unnaturally high expectations. Once I catch one, I get severely disillusioned, and either convince myself there's nothing wrong, cheat emotionally and/or physically, or completely give up on love all together.

I've also got self-acceptance/love issues...serious ones.

So long story short..

I used Equal and Placidus house systems on my natal and nothing seemed to change .. is that right? or am I doing something wrong?

So far I've tried Placidus, Koch, Equal and Porphyry. I've been quite unsure about which house system suits me best ... but after changing house systems over and over again I decided to stick to Placidus because it describes me best.

Things that change depending on the house system I use:

*2nd/8th house cusp: Placidus and Koch put it in Taurus/Scorpio, Equal and Porphryry put it in Aries/Libra ... overall the Taurus/Scorpio axis sounds more like me, since I am very cautious about spending money (meaning I would never invest my money in stocks). However, I am also known for my shopping sprees where I tend to be somewhat of an impulsive buyer. Looking at the 8th house cusp as well, though, Scoprio makes more sense than Libra.
*Saturn: Placidus puts it exactly on the 7th/8th house cusp, all the other house systems put it in the 8th house ... I've felt the 7th house Saturn when I was younger. I was very cautious when it came to one-to-one relationships. I didn't let anyone get really close. I'm still like that sometimes. But the 8th house Saturn makes sense as well, because matters of death actually scare me a lot. I identify both with the 7th and 8th house Saturn.
*Pluto: Placidus and Koch put it in the 7th house, Equal and Porphyry put in the 8th house ... I'm definitely a 7th house Pluto person. I am pretty possessive in relationships and I do have a tendency to become somewhat controlling when I really care about someone.
*Sun: Placidus and Koch put it in the 8th house, Equal and Porphyry in the 9th house ... there's definitely a Scorpionic quality to my Sag Sun. Although some of those Scorpio qualities of my Sun could be due to the fact that I'm a cusp person (Scorpio/Sag cusp), I feel that the 8th house Sun sounds just like me. I feel very deeply and while I do forgive, I never forget.
*Moon: Placidus puts it close to the 5th/6th house cusp, Koch, Equal and Porphyry put it right in the middle of the 5th house ... I actually relate more to the 6th house Moon. I'm known to be quite the perfectionist in certain areas and I have always been quite the dutiful person.

So, long story short, in my case Placidus wins.

I use Placidus house system myself, and I am very accurate with it. If I use Equal house, nothing changes in my chart in regards to planets and lunar nodes. Even the Midheaven is in only 2 degrees from being in the 10th house. My Sun is in 2nd house and 3 degrees away from being in 3rd house in Placidus house system, but 8 degrees away from 3rd house in Equal house system. I can identify with having Sun in 3rd as well as 12th house ruler in the 3rd.

However,I do feel bothered looking at the charts of people born in high latitudes like in the Scandinavian countries with their lopsided houses.

Because of my studies in Vedic Astrology,I wonder if whole sign houses could work with Western Astrology. I think that they are used in Classical Astrology, but that system doesn't use the outerplanets. They use aspects by signs. When you add outerplanets there, whole sign aspects don't work. You have to use considerably smaller orbs with outerplanets.

Another thing too...if a planet is in a house and close to the cusp of the next house,I count it as being in both houses. It seems to work when I do readings.

BTW...I have retrograde Saturn in Gemini in 9th, and it's heavily modified with it being opposed Jupiter-Neptune in Sagittarius in 3rd and square Moon in Pisces in 6th. I feel that t-square reflects my Special education experiences,Dyslexia,Dyspraxia,ADHD as well as inheriting those conditions from both my parents as well as my issues with Depression and Anxiety as well as my psychiatric misdiagnoses of Schizoaffective Bipolar.

As far as religion/spirituality goes,

Both my mother and stepfather were Roman Catholics, and they never really enforced their religious beliefs on me. I was allowed to make my own decisions in regards to religious beliefs. I went to Sunday School from 5th grade to 7th grade. Growing up,I read mythology, and my parents never gave a hard time about it. I loved them so much, that you could even say that I had an Aspergers-like interest in them, and it helped me ace my English final on the Odyssey in 12th grade which kept me from getting an F in the English class. After I learned about Theory of Evolution in 7th grade, I shortly stopped going to church. I briefly went to church in 10th grade, but I chickened out when it was time to get baptized. I only went to church a few times in the navy. I was an atheist for a couple of years until my maternal grandfather's suicide. During the church service where we prayed for his soul because of his suicide,I was praying so hard in tears, and it was a profound experience for me. That changed everything. I started searching for the meaning of life, got involved with psychic readers who even got me praying to God. I got involved in New Age,metaphysical stuff which led me. I started believing in reincarnation, pastlives, karma thanks to pastlife readings and Brian L. Weiss' books on reincarnation. It was the day of a psychic faire that I had my pastlife reading,I found out my moonsign,Pisces that started the erosion of my astrological skepticism.
My religious/spiritual beliefs fit with Unitarian Universalism,Neopagan,New Age,and New Thought.

I am one of those born in Northern Europe, and my Placidus chart really does have big differences compared with the Equal House system:

Sun in 1st (Equal) vs. 2nd (Placidus)
Moon&Venus 2nd (Equal) vs. 3rd (Placidus)
Mars in 3rd (Equal) vs. 4th (Placidus)

I have real trouble with these! Totally confused, as other factors seem to balance things out whichever way I try to see the charts...

Maybe all systems work, interlapping...??

Interesting points everyone.

I think in many instances equal vs placidus or koch doesnt change most placements. But in the majority of charts it will change a few things - which seem to be extremely revealing and accurate. Be wary of having grown attached to interpretations of placements in houses you are familiar with. I would venture that any placement you are attributing x trait to, you can find another aspect in the chart that suggests that.

Sag Sun - pluto in the 8th can be extremely possessive. Pluto in 7 has more to do with transforming through relationships than being possessive in relationships. There are many aspects that go with possessiveness - pluto in a house is not a special one.

Also, signs on cusps of houses dont necessarily reveal how that area of your life works.

There is no question to me that planets within a few degrees of the cusp of the following house will have aspects of both houses.

Also, placidus, koch and the others are predicated on the notion of 4 quadrants and the midheaven being the 10th house cusp. I maintain that the MC does not exclusively involve job or career. It can or cannot. Perhaps the reason it moves bet houses 9-11 or 12 is that it is about our outermost focused energy. The energy involved in effecting and being effected by community, larger frames of thinking, society and the universe. Not career necessarily, which is a narrow definition of it. As opposed to the first 2/3 of the chart which are personal and relational. Its possible that there are really 3 quadrants - consistent with the representation of each sign in an element, as well as the basic planetary structure - jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune - all representing larger, more global and less personal aspects of life.

Also, I have not found the IC point particularly meaningful, of the 4 points and its absence or lack of emphasis in equal kinda makes sense.

Well, this pretty much depends on the interpretation. When I was trying to find out which house system would suit me best I've read many interpretations on both Pluto in the 7th house and Pluto in the 8th house. And in most cases I identified more with Pluto in the 7th. Maybe I should have added that I have Pluto in Scorpio ... so this might be a factor as well.

I have to disagree a little. There's no doubt that planets in a house will more or less overshadow the influence of the sign on the cusp of the house. BUT if you don't have ANY planets in a certain house, the sign on the cusp actually does matter. Otherwise calculating the Ascendant wouldn't make any sense either. But that's just IMHO...

Anyway, the two main reasons for me choosing Placidus are the placements of my Sun and Moon (in the 8th and 5th/6th house respectively). Koch is fairly accurate as well in my case.

All that being said, there never will be an answer to that question. There simply is no house system that is universally superior to all the others. Everyone has to decide for themselves which house system suits them best.

Fantastic posts everyone, thank you. Keep them coming...

the reason l started this is because l have a huge stellium in first house of saturn/n node/moon/venus plus sun and mercury at end of it.

With equal system this puts my sun and mercury in 2nd house with my mars.

My Neptune in equal moves up from 8th in Scorpio to 9th.

My 7th house ruler virgo stays the same but Libra is now ruler of 8th with equal instead of floating within 7th.

It's SO confusing LOL

Still trying to decide which l like best!

I have to say, I tried the equal house system and I find it VERY interesting! Some of my planets changed houses and they seem to make more sense with the equal houses. Also, the synastry between my SO and I just got more interesteing, too. ;-)

I do have a question about the MC, though. I can understand what Bucket Rider is saying about the MC not having to be on the 10th house cusp, but then how do you interpret its position in other houses? My SO's MC is now in the 8th house...what the heck does that mean? The MC kind of confuses me anyways, and there isn't a whole lot of info out there that I can find. I've always wondered what the deal was with his MC, because my NN is EXACTLY conjuct his MC (only 43 SECONDS difference) and this seems significant but I don't know what it means. Now that it's possibly in the 8th house...does this mean I'm gonna kill him??? lol
