This is a newb question but here it goes...

Who names the stars/asteroids?

I noticed that the meanings of some of the asteroids/stars in astrology are related to the attributes of the mythological character of their name. So does that mean that astrologers name the stars? I seriously doubt that astronomers would allow that. I thought that scientists name the stars by number. I would imagine that it would take many years, even generations, for the meaning of a newly discovered planet or asteroid to be understood.

Not sure how these meanings are derived.
