from : " Relating : An Astrological Guide to Living With Others on a Small Planet " .. by Liz Greene .. published 1979 ..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Element of Air: the Thinking Type
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.
.. Air, considered astrologically, is a positive, masculine element, and the airy signs - Gemini, Libra and Aquarius - are usually described in astrological textbooks as being detached, communicative, interested in the world of ideas, and favouring rationality. They are, in short, civilised. Air is the only element in the zodiacal wheel which does not contain any animal symbolism ; Gemini and Aquarius are both represented by human figures, the Twins and the Waterbearer respectively, while Libra is portrayed as an inanimate object, the Scales. Air is the element which is most typically human, the furthest removed from instinctual nature ; and it is the human kingdom which has developed - or perhaps overdeveloped in last two hundred years - the function of thinking as its great gift.
.
.. All three airy signs, although different in their modes of expression, share the same need to relate life experiences to a preconceived framework of ideas. This framework may come from outside, culled from the books, teachings and conversations with others, or it may come from within, painstakingly created by one's own laborious mental processes ; but the existence of the framework is all-important and there is a tendency to take all experiences and seek in them the underlying pattern of logic which will make them conform to this preconceived structure.
.
.. Thinking primarily differentiates, through logic, between 'this' and 'that', and it will be apparent why the air signs are associated with a temperament which collects and categorises information, weighing one thing against another, and forming a philosophical framework out of the bits and pieces.
.
.. The airy type - and this does not necessarily mean an individual born under an air sign, so much as it does one whose chart as a whole contains a predominance of airy factors - will usually resemble, in general and in particulars, the qualities of the thinking type as Jung describes him. He has all the blessings of that type - the highly developed mind, the sense of fairness and capacity for impersonal assessment of situations, the love of culture, the appreciation of structure and system, the courageous adherence to principals, the refinement. He also has all the failings of the type - in terms of the 'inferior' function - and these are euphemistically expressed in the typical characteristics ascribed to the three airy signs : Gemini has a horror of being pinned down in personal relationships ; Libra is notorious for sitting on the fence and refusing to commit himself, and Aquarius is known for his cool detachment and distaste for emotional displays which so often form a part of personal relating.
.
.. In other words, the airy type has a problem with feeling. Implicit in the preponderance of air in a chart is the likelihood that the world of personal feeling exchange will be the biggest problem of the individual's life - although he may not know it untill his wife leaves him - because feelings, unlike everything else which comes under his microscopic eye, cannot be classified, structured, analysed, or fitted into the framework.
.
.. There are many Aquarians, women as well as men, who pride themselves on the fact that they never cry, because they see displays of emotion as weakness. This is rather a questionable virtue considering what is inevitably building up in the unconscious through such unwarranted underestimation of the feeling function. Ask a typical Geminian what he feels about something, and he will begin, " Well, I think .. ". When you tell him you want his feelings, not his thoughts, he often simply does not know what he feels and must go off for half an hour to find out. Gemini being Gemini, he will probably not come back again ; and you have lost him because you have been too 'possessive' and 'demanding'. Then there is the characteristic Libran's habit of simply avoiding anything to do with the dark emotional undercurrents of relationships because they aren't 'nice' ; he prefers to dwell in the ivory tower of his romantic ideals, working out precisely how he would like his relationships to be, and wondering why things never come out that way. And we should not forget the classic Aquarian quote, made to the woman who complains that in forty years of marriage she has never received either flowers or any overt display of affection : " But I told you I loved you when we were married. Isn't that enough ? "
.
.. Is it really everyone else's problem ? Or could it be that the airy type, whose cool objectivity and sociability have earned him the reputation of appearing to most 'normal' of the types, has a rather infantile approach to the world of feeling. Could it be that he Must appear detached, controlled and reasonable because he is really terrified of what might be boiling away down in the depths ? Some airy people are only too aware of the uncomfortable autonomy of their feeling function, and treat it as though it were some kind of dark beast which occasionaly escapes through oversight, but on good days remains behind bars so as not to disturb the smooth order of rational life. Other airy people are completely unconscious of their feeling, and mistake for what they cannot genuinely express a variety of superficial substitutes : displays of sentiment, monetary donations of a well-publicised kind to charities, and a kind of sacchirine moist-eyed response to 'dogs and children'.
.
.. One might, of course, ask why it should be necessary to stir up the beast ; surely life would be better if it remained tame, and one did not have to be bothered with such messy stuff as emotions ? When one considers the great gift of consistent and harmonious behaviour which the airy type usually expresses, why complicate matters ? Fine, if you are prepared to live in a cave like Yogi Milarepa, concentrating your energies upon melting snow - but not when you live in a world with other people. It is not that there is something 'wrong' with the airy type, or that he is 'abnormal' ; he is himself, and as such is right for himself. But unless he learns something about the world of feeling, and develops some capacity to relate on a feeling level with others, he remains hopelessly blind to feeling values, and is capable of much unintentional cruelty. One not very pleasant example of a repressed feeling function and its subsequent eruption is the Weimar Republic and the development of the Third Reich, prior to the last war - a problem on which Jung has written extensively in 'Civilisation in Transition'. In the present decade science, which is built upon thinking principals, runs the perpetual risk of seeing its discoveries utilised for mass destruction if it cannot retain some awareness of feeling reality and the fact that knowledge by itself, without the wisdom of the heart, is not only incomplete but downright dangerous. If one can excuse inferiority of feeling in his personal life because 'it doesn't hurt anybody', he should consider the broader social implications. Usually, however, somebody is hurt on a personal level, and more often than not it is the airy type himself.
.
.. One of the more tragic aspects of all this on a personal level is that the air sign personality, because he is rarely in touch with his deeper feelings, is also generally oblivious to everyone else's. Thus it comes as a rude jolt when someone close to him begins to express dissatisfaction with a relationship, or departs with a loud slam of the door and a parting shot about his coldness and insensitivity. If he is the one to terminate the relationship, he usually believes that by still 'being friends' everything is made all right, and is rarely aware of the pain he may cause. If he is the one rejected, he is usually forced to learn what he fears most about himself : that underneath the cool mind lies a dependency of feeling which, although often unrecognised and unexpressed, is so potent that the departure of a partner or child can completely shatter the foundations of his life.
.
.. Another pitfall which often awaits the airy type is the kind of fatal facination with Professor Rath, the stiff, pendantic pedagogue incurs in Lola Lola, the cabaret singer in the film The Blue Angel. No personality type is quite as prone to this sort of emotional excess as air, because when the airy individual's feelings take him over, they do so with a vengeance. His thoughts, once so crystalline and clear, are then dominated by his feelings and by the individual who has received the projection of this unconscious side of himself ( see .. http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/016569.html ) ; as long as he remains ignorant of the deeper levels of his own nature the other will appear proportionately more loving, warm, forgiving and sympathetic - one aspect of feeling - or fickle, capricious, unpredictable and a true embodiment of elemental nature in all her moods. The maternal aspect of feeling, and its facination for the airy person, is also portrayed in many fairy tales where the beloved is long-suffering and can redeem through her patient acceptance, like Patient Griselda ; the more volatile aspect of feeling is portrayed by those tales where the hero falls desperately in love with an ondine, a mermaid, a mysterious creature of the depths with a woman's body and a fish's tail, who in the end either leaves him or destroys him.
.
.. Some of the objects of the airy persons fantasies can lead him on a merry dance straight to hell - the hell of his own vulnerable and childlike feeling nature. But we create our own fates through the creative power of the unconscious, and when an individual finds himeself in this kind of situation it is very likely because this is precisely the situation he needs to help him become conscious of his feeling function. Air has a magnetic attraction to water, which symbolises the opposite function : feeling. Even if the partner is not really a suitable hook - that is, if the other's chart does not show a strong emphasis of planets in water signs - somehow he or she will appear ideally watery when clothed with the unconscious projection. Air is notorious for being a poor judge of partner, because he chooses everything according to reason untill Eros chooses him. Then he has no choice at all, but is under the domination of the unconscious. His insistence on logic and consistency in all things will inevitably provoke such stress in the unconscious that he dooms himself to an eruption of the inferior function when the pressure becomes too great to bear.
.
.. Even in less dramatic relationships between the thinking and feeling types than heroes and mermaids, we may hear the following traditional dialogue:
" Why are you in such a bad mood, dear ? You've been cold to me all evening. "
" What are you talking about ? What mood ? I feel fine . "
" But i know you're in a bad mood. I can feel it. Tell me what's wrong. "
" I tell you I'm perfectly all right. Why do always have to demand my constant attention ? "
" But I'm not being demanding, it's just that your'e being very bad-tempered with me .. "
" If I'm bad-tempered it's because you make me that way, always demanding and invading my privacy .. "
.
.. Those who recognise this parody may well ask what can be done about it. It seems as though one finds someone who truly understands, and then turns out to be a stranger. The airy man or woman will always find his greatest challenges and his greatest potential for growth in those situations where another's feelings, or his own, blocks his path and presents an obstacle with which his intellect simply cannot cope. His richest relationships will be with feeling types, for they are both his greatest facination and the reflection of his own inner self.

**Ask a typical Geminian what he feels about something, and he will begin, " Well, I think .. ". When you tell him you want his feelings, not his thoughts, he often simply does not know what he feels and must go off for half an hour to find out. **

i can really relate to that bit .. ;-) ..
moon/mars/jupiter in gemini .. saturn 'n neptune in libra .. n.node/vertex/vesta in aquarius ..
water in my chart .. oh where oh where doth the ocean lie ? ..
cancer ascendant .. uranus in cancer .. oooo ceres in cancer and 'point of fortune' ( grasping at watery straws here ;-)) .. )
odd .. i really like 'feeling' type music .. not really in tune with jazz .. but love country/blues/soul and rock ..
and when feelings do peep out .. temper wise .. oooo like a bullish tornado .. not nice at all ..
someone once asked me .. " how's your emotional life doing " .. hhhmmmm that had me stumped ..
had to go away and think .. that was about a year or so ago .. never did get around to answering that query ..
am still Thinking about that one .. ;-)))) ..
guess i'm thankful to be able to play the guitar .. a great way to express those 'feelings' ..
( pluto and chiron transits .. talk about inner emotional turmoil .. yechhhh .. ;-)))) .. )

funny .. i've got a cancerian sun sign friend .. he literally hates any type of 'feeling' music ..
he simply can't deal with it for some reason .. i must take a look at his chart for clues on that ..

yeah .. i will get the other elements typed out .. if i don't get geminiable distracted .. ;-))
was going to type the lot in one go .. but given the various posts about 'airy' folk on this board ..
especially the facination with aquarians :-) .. thought i should get the 'air' posted pronto like ..
( am listening to the hamsters at the moment .. 'stone free' be playing ;-))) ... )

~ Nőde ~
timely .. hhhmmm .. maybe you've been thinking what i've been thinking re various LL posts ..
taurean telepathy maybe ?? .. glad you appreciate the texts .. :-)
in any case that 'projection' text is at the begining of the book ..
be more or less fundamental toward understanding what Liz Greene writes about ..
( there's a preceding bit to the 'elements' chapter .. but will probably leave that 'till last
( thought i'd get the actual element pages done first ..

'later ..

HMM, i am a triple aquarius and while i can relate to an extent, i sort of found the article to be a bit off. i am VERY in touch with my feelings, though i do feel more COMFORTABLE thinking things through, after i've felt my feelings. also, i disagree that "feelings, unlike everything else which comes under his microscopic eye, cannot be classified, structured, analysed, or fitted into the framework." i believe thoughts and feelings can work in tandem and there can be a dialogue between them in one's own soul.

but maybe my very feeling nature comes from my singleton water planet and my SN in pisces. i just don't relate to this dry, robot picture that is painted of air signs.

however, i do find it very weird when people are SO attached to their emotional drama that they cannot fathom a way out, and work toward it. it takes a certain detachedness to do that, which i think is healthy. it's all about balance.

** "feelings, unlike everything else which comes under his microscopic eye, cannot be classified, structured, analysed, or fitted into the framework." **
i think Liz is probably describing one end of the spectrum as it were .. maybe it's more to do with expression i don't know ..
and in anycase .. i think women generally are more in touch with the 'feeling' nature than men .. it's like when LG describes the taurean sun sign .. that be my sun sign .. i can't identify with 'everything' she writes about it .. just as i can't identify with everything she writes about air .. despite being an very airy taurean .. i think one has to take into account the shades of grey in between and how a person may or may not be in touch with all the bits 'n peices that make up their personality .. you may be a lucky air type who has connected with your feeling nature through your experiences in life .. i mean i know what i feel at any given stage .. but expressing it doesn't come easy .. and again that's not exclusively the fact of my airy placements .. nor exclusively my astro. chart .. much has to do with early life experiences ..
i think it would be virtually impossible to write about astrological influences including all the shades of grey examples .. in order to make a point the spectrum ends are often talked/written about ..
and with every aspect interp and sign interp and house interp etc etc .. there are always two sides to the coin ..
i know very well how i felt when i had a pluto opposite natal moon ( 12th house gemini moon ) transit ..
but .. those feelings were triggered thru an incident with my mother .. and all the turmoil of my childhood hit me in the face in one seemingly giant blow .. and i was very angry and resentful at having to feel all that stuff from childhood again ..
i think difficulty in 'expression' fits me better re the 'air' .. rather than 'not being in touch with' .. if that makes any sense .. i like to think of geminian stevie nicks ( the singer ) as an example of an airy sunsign who can express what she feels ..

i see the astrologcal influences as being just that .. influences .. and folks react in different ways to those influences ..
like a rainy day .. some folks will stay indoors .. others may take a walk in the rain and sing a merry tune whilst doing so ..
( edited to add ) ..
and to take that one step futher .. one could not expect a person with a psychopathic brain to react in the same way as non-psychopathic person .. simply because brain scans have shown that a psychopath's brain has certain areas, that, for some reason are not reactive to certain stimuli .. for example, they cannot recognize another persons terror for what it is. ( and i'm sure there are any number of psychopathic watery-chart people about ) .. and .. it is known that for some reason they do not learn from life's lessons .. they have a habit of repeating their mistakes .. along comes a saturn transit and 'bang' they get often caught out and end up in prison .. or worse ..
and again .. there are shades of grey with psychopathy .. there are full-blown psychopaths and partial psycopaths .. and lord knows there are any number of recreational drugs about that can induce a temperory state of psychopathy .. i only say that as once many years ago someone gave me a tablet at a party that they said was 'ectasy' .. well i'd never tried it ( nor will i ever try it again ) .. and i'm not one hundred percent sure it was what they said it was .. but i do know this .. i lost all 'feelings' that evening .. and there was an opportunity to commit a robbery .. and i thought to myself .. hey i could grab that pile of money and not feel the slightest bit guilty .. i could mug an old lady on the way home and not give a hoot about it .. .. and to this day i wonder about the effect of recreational 'ectasy' on unborn children .. i.e. mums-to-be who were taking 'ectasy' whilst pregnant .. did that effect the unborn childs brain development .. is that why now there seem to be so many sociopathic thuggish teenagers/adolescents about in britain .. who take delight in beating up and even murdering total strangers for a laugh .. ( .. given that 'ectasy' was introduced to the uk in the early 80's .. ) ..

given that no two brains will be biologicaly identical .. it stands to reason that folks will react differently to the astrological influences .. ( am i now sounding like an 'airy' type .. :-))) .. ) ..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
wonder what the reaction will be to the other 'element' descriptions .. ;-)))
Thanks for this article, I guess it painfully arouses things in me as well.
I'm Aqu with Lib moon, Gem mars, merc aqu etc.
I just can't feel things sometimes, not really that, I just don't turn my mind to feelings. I'm very logical and yes, I do turn my mind to reason when I have chosen partners in the past (but luckily it has worked and saved me from some god awful situations). I also have never forgiven those who have made me cry in the past, especially publicly. I have also noticed that when I can't cope emotionally I just get angry (mars gem-aries asc) and just start spitting razor blades or I just cut off. I think thats probably the reason why I don't have many friends nor like people (its this resentment that I have that people just don't get me). It probably explains why my Emotional IQ is like 63!!
But the bad thing is that the only watery things I have in my chart is NN Sco in 8th, an rx anarectic saturn in cancer (totally sux), Ura in sco 7th. These are all pretty bad placements except the NN which is probably forcing me to confront these emotional aspects in life (and deeply explore them). I suppose having no earth (apart from Cap MC) is also not grounding me to consider these feelings.
I'm doomed.
happy dragon: thanks for replying! of course i understand that it was meant to represent air in and of itself, and it does make sense to that extent. also, what you said, "i think difficulty in 'expression' fits me better re the 'air' .. rather than 'not being in touch with' .. if that makes any sense." i can relate to as well. i very rarely open myself up to people emotionally unless i'm very close. i'm far too independent for that and like to solve my own problems and deal with my feelings alone and without dragging people into that. maybe it is my taurus moon that also contributes to this; i don't want to burden anyone. the only emotions i really enjoy sharing with people are those within the *happy* spectrum, unless i feel very very safe with a person. otherwise, it feels too sloppy or something. even somewhat pointless, in some cases.
23, you're not doomed! just be yourself and notice what you love about yourself and enjoy those things, and if you feel you are lacking in something, consciously allow yourself to believe you can cultivate those areas in yourself! you can do it!
that evidently is a taurean trait from what i've read .. i'm definitely like that as well ..
in fact that aslo reminds me of an aquarian sun friend ( now passed on ) .. he was a taurus moon .. cancer ascendant .. gemini mars
his 'feeling' nature came out thru his music .. but trying to talk to him about how he felt .. well he sure had a tough time with that ..
often he would play how he 'felt' on his guitar .. i mean one could tell what he was feeling by listening to how he was playing ..
ah, interesting! i was only guessing it was the taurus moon in me; i've never heard that. it just seemed taurus-mooney somehow . i'm an aquarius too. interesting about your friend! i tend to express or work through my feelings in my art as well (painting and drawing mostly). i so wish i could play guitar cuz i can definitely feel how that would be helpful too.
I'm a double gemini.
As I write this I'm trying to refrain from using the word "I think".
Just like 23, all admit I have an emotional IQ around the same range.
The only way I've found that I can help become emotional is to listen and try to understand
people who are a blend of water and air.
But its pretty difficult if the last threes years I've just been plain angry.
Is it part of the life development of a gemini?? because of the way they develop in the world.
I mean I know Malcom X born on a taurus/gemini cusp went throught a period of this life were he was just angry at everything.
Heinz Guderian another famous gemini who is credited for developing blitzkrieg had developed a temper
in his early teens.
Unlike heart cakes, art doesn't rally show my emotions it just shows what I'm thinking.
the following is an excerpt from the intro pages to the chapter about the astrological elements
.. which may or may not get typed up in it's entirety .. so dropping in this thread for now ..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.
.. As Jung has shown in " Psychological Types " the apparently extraordinary fact that people do tend to fall into certain groupings by temperament has long been a preoccupation with medicine, philosophy, and the arts. Before that, it was the preoccupation of astrology, which offers what is perhaps our earliest descriptionof typology. It is consequently not suprising - except to certain schools of psychology which insist that we are wholly creatures of heredity and enviroment - that Jung's four function types - thinking ( air ) .. feeling ( water ) .. sensation ( earth ) .. intuition ( fire ) - fit hand-in-glove with astrology's ancient division of the four elements. It is not a case one being explained away by, or derived from, the other ; rather, each is a distinct way of describing the empiric observation of the same phenomenon.
.
.. This phenomenon is the simple fact that although all people are unique, they also gravitate towards rough categories based on a fundamental way of seeing, evaluating, apprehending and interpreting life. Aside from being an amusing means of pegging one's friends and relatives, understanding something of this basic typology is an excellent way of learning that most difficult of lessons: that not everybody is the same as I am.
.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.. the folowing paragraph is from Jungs book " Psychological Types "
.. ( routledge and keagan paul, london 1971 )
.. " Everyone thinks that psychology is what he himself knows best - psychology is always His psychology, which he alone knows, and at the same time his psychology is everybody else's psychology. Instinctively he supposes that his own psychic constitution is the general one, and that everyone is essentialy like everyone else, that is to say, like himself ... as though his own psyche were a kind of master-psyche which suited all and sundry, and entitled him to suppose that his own situation was the general rule. People are profoundly astonished, or even horrified, when this rule quite obviously does not fit - when they discover that another person really is different from themselves. Generally speaking, they do not feel these psychic differences as in any way curious, let alone attractive, but as disagreeable failings that are hard to bear, or as unendurable faults that have to be condemmed ."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.
.. It will be immediately obvious that this typical human attitude can do even the most promising of relationships. In more volatile relationships, like that of a parent and child, its effects can be positively tragic. A married couple, or a pair of friends, may be able to fight the issue out and come to a greater recognition of each other's individual viewpoint, but the child cannot defend himself. He is at the mercy of the expectations and assumptions which his parents project onto him, and may pay for these for the remainder of his life.

HD instead of typing out you can just cut and paste from the book, which is accessible in the link I posted above. I'm not sure if all the elements are there cause it cuts off short.

( havn't tried my other browzer yet .. but i suspect it won't work out either )
so i didn't get to look at what bits of the book were there ..

similar text about the elements was written up in her book "astrology for lovers"
