What placements should one have in order to succeed in these areas? Is it a must to have a proeminent air heavy chart or planets falling in air houses?

Yeah, I think you're on the right track. Maybe having the Moon in an air sign like Gemini or Aquarius would help. This would make you more comfortable with the hectic lifestyle and constant change you would have to deal with in a profession like that. And prominent Sag planets/angles would probably assist in that field as well with the constant long-distance travel. I guess it also depends on whether you are going to be on international flights or not. Basically, I think one would be best suited to it if the chart had a strong fire/air sign influence or if there are planets focused in the 3rd/9th house axis, probably in connection to the AC and/or MC.

I wanted to be an airline pilot growing up and I have an Aquarius Moon in the 3rd house with the ruler of the 9th (my Capricorn Sun) conjunct Mercury (in Capricorn) and the ruler of the 3rd house (Saturn in Sag).... though I have changed my mind about it since then. I hope this helps some.
