Thanks Lara, but this is where I become unstuck. Your rising is Aries, right? Does that make it straight forward around the natal chart? That your 7th is bound to be in Libra?IP: Logged |

If your ac is (for example) in aries then it's being ruled by your mars. Then you look up it's position and weathear it's in dignity or debility says what kind of energy is being perceived(ac). To determine what planet rules a certain house look where the house cusp(in what sign does the house begin in) is. IP: Logged |

If I have no planets in the 2nd house, does that mean I have no ruler in the 2nd house? If I have 3 planets in the 5th house, which one is its ruler? How can a ruler of one house be in another? This is the beginning of my understanding. Thanks for your patience IP: Logged |

The ruler is not the planet in the house. It's the planet that rules the sign on the cusp of the house. "Cusp" just means "the beginning" of the house. You can tell by looking at the chart which sign is on the cusp. But if you're having trouble seeing that, astro.com lists which sign is on the cusp of each house. To find this, when you're viewing your chart click on the link for "view additional tables." On the right, it lists the sign on the cusp of each house. Then just find the planet that rules that sign, and look for which house that planet is in. For example, if someone's ASC is Pisces, that means Pisces is on the cusp of his 1st house. Next, you find the ruler of Pisces. That's Neptune. You find which house it's in. Let's say Neptune is in the 9th house. In this case, the ruler of the 1st house is in the 9th house. (And a little about what that means: The first house is about self, so with the ruler in the 9th, this person would have some Sag [sign associated with the 9th house] traits and/or be very focused on 9th house issues.) If I have no planets in the 2nd house, does that mean I have no ruler in the 2nd house? Yes. You have no ruler IN that house. But every house has a ruler. You still have a ruler OF your 2nd house. If your 2nd house is in Gemini, then the ruler of your second house is Mercury. If Mercury is in your 8th house, then you have the ruler of your 2nd in your 8th house. If I have 3 planets in the 5th house, which one is its ruler? Not necessarily any of them. Let's say the sign on the cusp of your 5th house is Taurus. That means the ruler of your 5th house is Venus. If Venus is IN your 5th house, then the ruler of your 5th house is in the 5th house. However, if Venus isn't in that house, then none of those 3 planets is the ruler. Those 3 planets rule other houses. IP: Logged |

Koiflower the RULER is nothing to do with the planets within the house. The RULER is the SIGN on the CUSP of the HOUSE. So if the beginning of your 7th H is pisces then your ruler is neptune IP: Logged |

Oh just thought this might be the problem. Each sign is ruled by a planet (some by two planets, the "traditional" and "modern" rulers).Sign & the planet it's ruled by... Aries - Mars Taurus - Venus Gem - Mercury Cancer - Moon Leo - Sun Virgo - Merc Libra - Venus Sco - Pluto (and Mars, the old ruler) Sag - Jupiter Cap - Saturn Aqua - Uranus (and Saturn, old ruler) Pisces - Neptune (and Jupiter, old ruler) So identify the sign on the cusp of a house. Determine which planet rules that sign. And then locate which house that planet is in.
Another example: Libra is on the cusp of the 8th house. Its ruler is Venus. Venus in the 3rd house. So the ruler of the 8th house is in the 3rd house. IP: Logged |

Okay, it's making more sense now, as I can see how it works on my natal chart. The cusp of my 2nd house is in Taurus and ruler of Taurus is Venus, which is in my 5th house. Soooooo, the ruler of my 2nd is in my 5th. The cusp of my 6th house is in Virgo and the ruler of Virgo is Mercury, which is in my 5th house. Sooooooo, the ruler of my 6th is in my 5th. Okay, let me try one more. The cusp of my 12th house is Pisces and the ruler of Pisces is Jupiter, which is in my 3rd house. Sooooooo, the ruler of my 12th is in my 3rd house. Phew! It kind of makes it easier to learn having Aries rising. I will have to take a look at other charts where the Asc is not Aries, to get another perspective on chart reading. Thanks Lara, evander, deuxantares and jane koiflower xox

Thanks for the list, jane. The double up of Mercury and Venus means I have to have another look at my natal chart.Hmmmm, the cusp of my 3rd house is in Gemini and the ruler of Gemini is Mercury, which is in my 5th house. Soooooo, the ruler of my 3rd house is in the 5th house. The cusp of my 6th house is in Virgo and the ruler of Virgo is Mercury, which is in my 5th house. Soooooo, the ruler of my 6th house is in my 5th house. Yep, I understand that. Thanks everyone!! Now to look up the ruler of the 'X' house being in the 'Y' house at astrologycafe.com to learn more about myself, and thereby learn about others - LOL

You've got it. Ruler of your 2nd is in your 5th. I have ruler of my 5th in my 2nd. I wonder if that make us compatible. IP: Logged |

koiflower, the ruler of Pisces is Neptune, so I'd look up its position first for your 12th house theme(Jupiter being the old ruler of Pisces).IP: Logged |
