I'd like to hear what size orbs everyone here uses for interpreting aspects.I tend to slightly change my orbs as I accumulate evidence, but here is my set of orbs for common aspects that I generally adhere to when studying charts. Wider orbs than the ones listed below can be fun for speculation, but to properly get down to the essential core of any delineation, I think its best to cut out wider angles. -Conjunction: 8 degree orb -Opposition: 8 degree orb -Trine: 6 degree orb -Square: 6 degree orb -Sextile: 3 degree orb -Quintile: 2 degree orb -Quincunx: 2 degree orb -Semisextile: 1 degree orb Notes: 1) I follow the "transition of light" theory where aspects can form between two planets when facilitated by a third planet, which throws the energy, thus widening the orb of an aspect further (Example: Mars at 12Aries may conjunct Mercury at 22Aries, with Venus at 17Aries). 2) I'm prone to a slightly wider orb if an aspect is Applying, and slightly more narrow orb for Separating. 3) Because so many people share aspects between the outer planets, I often narrow the orb when considering their effects. sextile- 4 conj- depends, sometimes i will use a wide orb, if its in the same sign...i like to sense out the energy and see if it can work. im in between on this one. trine- 6-8 square-8-9 opposition-9-10ive let orbs grow out a bit from the past...i use to be more strict. IP: Logged |

writesomethingI think I'm very strict with orbs, but just starting to lax with them a bit. For conjunctions I've been using 4 degrees. Astro.com allows for up to 10 which I think is too generous. I think the tighter the orb the more prominent the traits of the aspect. But also it depends on the planets involved as much as the aspects. Especially in synastry, as I think, say a precise 0 degree Pluto conjunct Pluto is more generational, whereas Pluto aspecting a personal planet like Venus at a larger orb is more personal so I would give that more weight - but the tighter the orb, the more effect it has. orbs that I usenatal, composite 8 degrees for conjunctions, oppositions 6 degrees for squares, trines 4 degrees for sextiles 2 degrees for quincunx 2 degree for semisextile for synastry half of the natal orbs also smaller orbs for outerplanets no more than 2 degrees for Uranus and Neptune,1 degree for Pluto, 1/2 degree orb for Eris but
I am considering using a cosmobiological,harmonic,geometrical approach so 5 degrees for natal conjunctions,oppositions,squares 2.5 degrees for semisquares,sesquiquadrates
1.5 degree for conjunction, opposition, square midpoints 1 semisquare, sesquiquadrate midpoints I will also use 1 degree orb for any minor aspects and stretch it out a little if part of a planetary geometrical configuration which will usually have corresponding midpoints. This includes the golden section aspects that I have been researching. transits only 1 degree orb - to look for precise events. only use conjunction, opposition, square, semisquare, sesquiquadrate timed with 1 degree orb for both solar arcs, secondary progressions IP: Logged |

I'm not really sure to be honest. There are so many people saying different things, some very strict and some who will fight to the death that their 10 orb conjunction is strong in their chart.IP: Logged |

the first thing I ever learned about astrological calculations, which was actually from Linda's book on synastry, was using whole signs and just counting to get aspects. Honestly always stuck with that and I think it's pretty spot on. Obviously closer orbs are more intensely felt but sometimes I'm really shocked to hear people say that they don't feel a conjunction in their chart that is more than 10 degrees apart. We are WHOLE people, I don't think our energies are as easily partitioned as people would like to pretend everything interacts! IP: Logged |

In Vedic astrology too,the whole sign is used for aspects. So two planets in one sign with a distance of even say,25 degs would be considered conjunct. All other aspects are also counted by signs/houses and not by degrees.IP: Logged |
