I am an incoming freshman and school starts on the 23rd of august. I am looking forward to it and i am also scared. Any tips? what do you all think about sororities and fraternities? Any university tips or experiences you would liek to share? Or even advice. Have you all been to university and graduated?

Hey Lightgreen!

Relax! Everything will be gr8. I'm in my last year at college now. I'm not in a sorority or fraternity, but I know a few people who are. It was by choice that I didnt join but i think it's a great way to meet people. Especially in your first year when you are beginning to adapt to the new environment and the people. Campus activities too are good.
As far as school goes, in college you have a more personal relationship with your professors. They usually give you their phone numbers and email addresses. If there is anything you need help with, contact them. Them getting to know you, or talking to you can definitely help your grade if you are struggling with classes. Professors are not after you like in H.S. You either go to class or not. They wont question you about it, but will record it. They have the choice of dropping u out of the class if you miss too many. Avoid that, they keep your money even if you dont get the credits. But overall college is a fun time, the social life, the freedom, you get more independent. Enjoy it. Good luck, have fun!

Hey thanks for your kind words LS and LadyScorpio. As I was reading the thread by ladyscorpio i realized that i have heard that so many times before. It sounds so familar. As friends tell me, I just need to experience it all myself. But I didnt know that profssors give you their phone #'s. Thats cool.

Congratulations, LightGreen!

Any tips?

What size school are you going to? That will matter a lot. If you are going to a large university, the GE and core classes will be in auditoriums with 350+ students. The classes get divided into sections and assigned a Teaching Assistant, whom is usually a graduate student. In addition to attending class, there are labs and section meetings every week. Some classes assign homework. There are classes that determine the grade solely on two exams - mid term and final, and a 10-20 page term paper.

Always find out the last day of when you can drop classes without getting a No-Show on your transcript. Otherwise, the units get stacked on and your GPA goes down.

Do the best you possibly can in the first two years in college. It will be hard to improve your GPA afterward due to the weighting system of grades and units.

Make sure you budget your money and save for a rainy day!!! University texts and lab equipment are expensive. If you are trying to save money on books, purchase them used BEFORE classes start off-campus. Like an Off-Campus Bookstore. If you purchase your stuff on the first day the campus or dorms open, the bookstore will be swamped. If you wait too long, the used materials will be gone and you have to purchase new or get on a waitlist for new stuff.

Also, when you go to the bookstore - you have to leave your backpack in a locker or at the door. NEVER put valuables or IMPORTANT books inside the bag if you can't get a locker. Leave those things at home. People steal books and sell them.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for helping me. As for how big the classes are, I think they are 50 per class and some may be bigger or smaller. Actually I don't really know But I will find out on the 1st day of school.

Yeah, I have been told that they steal books at universities. They might even steal from the car...

It depends a whole lot on whether it's a state or private institution. It also depends on how much school spirit you had in high school. You're ultimately going to be with the same type of people in frats & soroties. I've read pro & con for yes or no.

Hated high school - loved college life - but I lived in a little bachorlorette apartment of my own each time.

Originally thought this was the "Staring Scorpio" thread, or "Scorpion University" thread... but if your parents have any reluctance to send you far away, listen to them. Balance out the pro's & con's. The world only gets more stressful the older you get, and your success, starting in this day and age, has everything to do with how you handle stress. Take a course on "Motivation" in the Psych department.

*wink*

Just be consious of how much energy you have to go around seven days a week, cuz you'll probably hardly get any rest. If you go to a party town that is.

HEY everyone!! how is it going?

YEAHHH....first week of school is over now. It was very very fun. I got to admit that I enjoy university so much better than high school. It's more freedom and I am quite determined, so far I am not distracted. I really want to study so I can do well.
