Soul Union with our country...

David Letterman wrote this; it's the David we
don't often see...

"As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark...
'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?''

A.. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating
in the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D.. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the
Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each
state?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.

J.. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of
trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias aping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious,
social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks
unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet
has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of hanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president who cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called very name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it.

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the
media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

I haven't had much to say lately, no energy, but I have to say that I loved David Letterman when I was in high school. He is extremely intelligent. Funny too.

Mystic,

Yeah, I don't get a chance to watch him much either anymore, but he is a maverick and he cracks me up to!

Why are you at a low energy level? Are you ok? Did I miss something on your posts? Tell me where I can catch up.

WELL, I generally love DL, and agree with him that we are spoiled brats here - one only has to go to Europe (which is actually not that different to us in terms of cultures) to understand how much we have and how much we whine...BUT

he skims over the fact that our civil liberties are being eroded surely and not so slowly...have you noticed how many more cops are on the streets, how many roadblocks and gratuitous stops are constructed...

on the one hand we complain too much and on the other, we are like those frogs being boiled in SLOWLY warming water...

and where he says people love the US but have no respect for us citizens, that is not entirely true. our LEADERSHIP has been the butt of ridicule for years, and while people envy us our freedoms and riches, they also see a people being led down the path to giving those freedoms and riches up by the SPECTRE of terrorism.

met any terrorists lately? we were hit ONCE (and some say it was an inside job) and all went ducking for cover under a blanket that gives up the right to privacy, to conduct your own business as you see fit. our president is currently berating the russians for stepping into georgia...ironic!

This thread belongs in Global Unity, the politics forum.

And, whether or not this has come from the mind of David Letterman, its pretty ridiculous.

The poll says they are unhappy with the direction the country is headed,
and, pressumably, with the current administration.

It doesnt say they are unhappy in general.

You can be sitting pretty and watching all your good fortune turn to dust,
and your unhappiness is not with your good fortune, but with its dissipation;
i.e. the direction in which things are heading.

We dont owe our priviledges to George W. Bush.

The direction we are heading is profound debt,
and both the loss and the maintanence of our way of life
is occuring at the expense of victimizing third-word countries.

How many more Iraqi civilians need to die needlessly
before we are permitted to be unhappy with the way things are going?
The current death toll for civilians is upwards of 151,000
(and that is one of the most conservative estimates available).

Sure, the article makes a good point about appreciating what you have.

But the author seems more intent on telling us to sit down and shut up,
and just be happy that all our freedoms are not being taken away.

I think it is okay to have high standards, and to want to move in an upward direction.

No matter how elevated we are, what matters most is the direction.

Jesus Christ taught that lesson two thousand years ago.
He rebuked the Pharisees for being complacent with their accomplishments.
To his way of understanding, a sinful and destitute man is more admirable,
provided that he is not stagnant, but, moving in the right direction.

DL's commentary made me think and be grateful. It encouraged me to pray for this nation and our government. To put my faith in God that as long as we acknowledge Him, He will direct our paths into peace and truth. That is why I placed it under soul unions, to hopefully encourage others to do the same.

"Blessed (empowered to prosper, empowered to succeed, happy, fortunate, to be envied)is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His heritage." Ps. 33:12

So I declare and decree that the United States of America is God's property and He defends, maintains and governs it to be a nation united against evil. A united nation of doers of good works, that is a blessing and a light to the entire world. We give God liberty, by our own authority as priests and kings of this world, to do His will in earth as it is in heaven.

I agree with you completely HSC, the fact that the country is unhappy with the way the government is going doesn't mean it is unhappy with the freedoms we have, it means we are angry that those freedoms are slowly being taken...

Let's Dance, I thought it was a nice idea to discuss this topic from the perspective of a Soul Union with our country. It is an important perspective. Also, if we are all "One" we also have a soul union and soul obligation to George Bush.

For those who think ol' George is on his way to becoming the embodiment of evil:

"But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?"

~ Mark Twain

Maybe if less hate was sent in his direction, his wrong acts would have less power and he might have a more difficult time carrying them out.

God bless you, George. Whatever happened in your life that caused you to make any "wrong" choices you have made (if there are "wrong" choices in the eyes of God), we ask that the scales be lifted from your eyes, and from our own eyes, that we may All see the Truth more clearly... and All grow to be more loving and compassionate human beings.

(As for me... I might update a little on my Campground thread soon or here... Learning and growing mostly... challenges, challenges...)

i don't think this was aimed personally at gw...however he DOES have a nerve warning the russians off georgia! he is as much caught in this web as anyone...my mom always used to say "vigilance is the price of freedom" and she did NOT mean patrolling the borders! i hope that pluto's journey through capricorn will help us sort out corporat(ion) america. because, people, it does basically come down to US...

Mystic, you are such a healing balm. You never cease to amaze me how you always take things to a higher level.
quote:
"Maybe if less hate was sent in his direction, his wrong acts would have less power and he might have a more difficult time carrying them out."
This makes sense to me. And I will only add to your prayer "gratitude" for what we have and that we honour the God of the second (3rd, 4th, gazillionth...) chance.
