"In 1976, after moving to Amsterdam, [Marina] Abramović met the West German performance artist Uwe Laysiepen, who went by the single name Ulay. When Abramović and Ulay began their collaboration, the main concepts they explored were the ego and artistic identity. This was the beginning of a decade of influential collaborative work. Each performer was interested in the traditions of their cultural heritages and the individual’s desire for ritual. Consequently, they decided to form a collective being called “the other”, and spoke of themselves as parts of a “two-headed body”. They dressed and behaved like twins and created a relationship of complete trust. As they defined this phantom identity, their individual identities became less accessible."

"Rather than concern themselves with gender ideologies, Abramović/Ulay explored extreme states of consciousness and their relationship to architectural space. They devised a series of works in which their bodies created additional spaces for audience interaction. In "Relation in Space" (1976) they ran around the room – two bodies like two planets, mixing male and female energy into a third component called “that self.” "Relation in Movement" had the pair drive their car inside of a museum for 365 laps; a black liquid oozed from the car, forming a kind of sculpture, each lap representing a year. (After 365 laps they entered the New Millennium.)"

"In discussing this phase of her performance history, Abramović has said: “The main problem in this relationship was what to do with the two artists’ egos. I had to find out how to put my ego down, as did he, to create something like a hermaphroditic state of being that we called the death self.” To create Breathing In/Breathing Out the two artists devised a piece in which they connected their mouths and took in each other’s exhaled breaths until they had used up all of the available oxygen. Seventeen minutes after the beginning of the performance they both fell to the floor unconscious, their lungs having filled with carbon dioxide. This personal piece explored the idea of an individual's ability to absorb the life of another person, exchanging and destroying it. In Imponderabilia (1977, reenacted in 2010) two performers, both completely nude, stand in a doorway. The public must squeeze between them in order to pass, and in doing so choose which one of them to face."

"In 1988, after several years of tense relations, Abramović and Ulay decided to make a spiritual journey which would end their relationship. Each of them walked the Great Wall of China, starting from the two opposite ends and meeting in the middle. As Abramović described it: “That walk became a complete personal drama. Ulay started from the Gobi Desert and I from the Yellow Sea. After each of us walked 2500 km, we met in the middle and said good-bye". Abramović conceived this walk in a dream, and it provided what she thought was an appropriate, romantic ending to a relationship full of mysticism, energy, and attraction. She later described the process: “We needed a certain form of ending, after this huge distance walking towards each other. It is very human. It is in a way more dramatic, more like a film ending … Because in the end you are really alone, whatever you do.”"

"At her 2010 MoMa retrospective Marina performed ‘The Artist Is Present’ as part of the show, where she shared a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing and this is what happened."

This girl is on FIRE

LOVE, because what else is worth living for, and dying for?!

Sandpaper kisses on a cheek or a chin
That is the way for a day to begin.
Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr
I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur!

Thank you for sharing Hera, that was beautiful. I'm overcome by emotions right now, as I'm going my separate ways from my other half after 14 years. I know that the love that I feel for him will never fade, but relationships can be very complicated, and it seems to be what's best for us both. Watching that makes me question why. Not everyone is lucky enough to find that in their lifetime, and to give up and walk away seems so senseless. I hope that's not the end of their love story, and that they reconnected after all these years. I love that they matched too, that was so cute.

Sometimes relationships run their course. It saddens me too, but I think our souls will always be connected with the ones we loved.

Oh no, these two again! I swear I went through a box of tissues watching those videos. I guess they have at least reconciled as friends. That makes me happy! It would be such a shame if they parted ways indefinitely after having such a close relationship during their years together. It truly is a beautiful love story, even if they didn't have the fairytale ending. No doubt they were destined to be in each others lives.

They were starting to grow apart, and then in the process of getting all the proper permits to be able to walk the Great Wall, he got his translator pregnant. Ooops! Yeah, that would be a hard one to get over. I wouldn't be able to move past that. It's sad when people take one another for granted like that. They were clearly in a world of their own, and it's unfortunate that someone was able to come between them. Human nature I guess.

I was touched by the story too. I think it was beautiful even though it wasn't "meant to be". I imagine it must be amazing to love and be loved like that..

It seems to me like they were Twin Flames, but of course that doesn't mean "happy ever after".

Metal, he claims she cheated first and only afterwards he slept with the other woman and got her pregnant. I also think she was much more ambitious than he was and he probably felt dragged around by her.. I find it amazing that they have Mars opposite Mars and one of the central themes of their art was the ego and personal identity..

That's heartbreaking.. it adds more depth to the video.

Ah, hell, I am crying a little bit at the idea of the whole of it. The title of this topic perfectly sums up the video.

crying:

If only more folks could end something of such greatness with such grace and love...

Acknowledging the certain end of something that has been ending for a long time.

I suppose I will have to be the one to finalize the deal with complete love and grace.

Thanks for sharing!

I saw that link/video some time ago (on FB) and have searched for it and shared it with others a time or two since then. It touched me deeply too. How awesome to add their charts to a thread.

I was so enthralled with their story when I learnt of that video. I hadn't known anything about them prior, but when he began walking forward, there was something that changed. It was palpable. I felt immediately - okay, these guys are twins. Clearly.

So powerful. Somewhere, deep in my soul, I long for that. Living for one's art and sharing the journey with one who just GETS it.

Wow, one year after my first response! I seriously cried for a good 7 hours straight after seeing these videos.

I still love him, and if we met years later, I'd still feel the same. Even though there were a lot of issues between us. I could never be indifferent towards him!

According to Linda, that's just what a Cancer sun man wants from a Scorpio sun woman! Cancer is aptly named, like a tumor!!! You may go into remission, but the chance of it coming back is always there.

I'm speaking of my own experience between my crazy Cancer and me, so it's not meant to offend.

When two Saggies collide, everything stops...
I've experienced that intensity and love and twin-ness with another Sag before. It was never meant to be. Maybe because it was that intense?

Maybe these two artists were too similar to last?

I am sad to announce this love story has taken a bitter turn:

What a shame. I am so disappointed.
