To me it's like keeping the other person on a leash and potentially expecting to gain something in case of divorce or a better social status. It would feel like contaminating the love between me and my man. Screw contracts, I want a pure, real connection.

I disagree the meaning of marriage, like everything else, is arbitrary; it can be whatever you want it to be. I've never been married, but if I ever do, it's going to be because I want to make that relationship extra special; as to say, "this person is nothing like the others who came before him." To me, it's about that vow and making that commitment believing you will never need a divorce because you truly believe you're only going to be with that person and no one else. I wouldn't want to marry someone because I want to put a leash on them; that's silly! If they wanna leave they will, it's not about security per se; it's about knowing what you want and not being afraid to make a bold statement.

I also don't care about diamonds or big weddings; I think I'd want the whole thing to be very simple and intimate, but that's because, again, I wouldn't marry just to get married.

It does tend to suck the fun right out of the room.

I know I would become complacent and lazy in a relationship if I married the guy.

So I prefer to just be someone's girlfriend. I'm a much better person that way.

Even that seems to court constraint.

I think I like to Dream that I am somebody's girlfriend.

That's where I'm happiest!

I think marriage is a mixture of legal incentives and romance.

I think it is a LOT harder than anyone can know until you get in it, but I think it is also the most beautiful thing if two mature people care about each other.

I do hate though people in my generation are idealizing marriage again. I feel like people don't realize it's not a big party and changing your name on FB like the day after you are married. Ugh. LOL.

I speak from experience and boy it is tough! People don't realize it isn't all flowers and sunsets. It takes work, communication & desire to succeed on BOTH parts. Having said that I doubt I'll ever marry again - I much prefer the idea of living in sin, ha!

Cappy, that leash comparison is like trying to tame a wild dog . I look at marriage as freedom within a structure, lay down your foundations and build your life together is romantic to me.

Well, I have the diametrically opposite viewpoint.

I find it immeasurably enrichening. My 20th anniversary is on Tuesday, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Wait. This sounds like Moon/Mercury/Venus aspect with Uranus.

I have Moon/Uranus quintile and I concur.

But this reminds me of "Shall we Dance?" when Susan Sarandon's character was asked the same question on marriage. The question being ;Why all the fuss over a piece of paper?

And then she responded,

'We need a witness to our lives. There's a billion people on the planet, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you're promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things, all of it, all of the time, every day. You're saying "Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go unwitnessed because I will be your witness".'

I was sold.
